Maryland v. Purdue (Game Thread)

they told Sasha
If that's the case (which is f'ed up since he wasn't inbounding, and another example of the crappy refs), then the same point I made earlier still stands with regard to Sasha should have realized what that *meant* (being a 5th year senior and all - I think I learned that as an 8th grader), and called timeout or yelled at Eric to change the play, or something...

100%. Likable kids all around, but zero mettle or toughness. Cannot stand their soft demeanor, especially at Mackey. Time to watch Brian Cardinal and Rob Hummel clips as a team.
too many slow footed players, don't get many 50/50 balls. Some of the passes were so bad too. In 2nd half, Edey bobbles a post entry pass and just throws it out of bounds, SS throws one to 2 red jersey players, he missed like 4 layups today, got no shooting again from Gillis.

If we have a team that shoots free throws >= 80%, I said you maybe go for it. We aren’t there, and just the sheer amount of things that can go wrong (inbounds steal, trap turnover, missing 1 or both FTs at the other end), why not just play it out and force them to attempt the three? Even if you foul on the shot, they have to make three FTs under pressure on the road. Just seems like a better strategy to me.

Admittedly, I’m still in disbelief that what happened to us against UVA happened to us, expect for the fact that it’s us, so why wouldn’t it have happened to us? Lol.
Well, Purdue did have the opportunity to put all its best FT shooters on the floor, so I think that is why it makes sense (maybe not 80% average combined, but I bet it was close to that).

Just glad Maryland came off cloud nine and Purdue started hitting 3s and Trevion kinda took over towards the end because there was no way Purdue was getting back in that game the way they were shooting with those horrific refs! Could of filled up a a notebook of all the bad and missed calls.

It is a loss morally. I hope this recruiter hasnt lost this team. I am not impressed with several elements of what he is doing. I was in his class, like the guy but man you have to get your players to play. Gillis looked lost the entire game and he is our effort guy.
maybe the guys were celebrating Ivey's BDay last night ( I know it;s today)

It’s not a loss in any way, shape or form. Sometimes you get another team’s best shot and maybe it’s not your day, but they didn’t quit, they came and won it at the end. I’ve been on both sides of it and it never feels like a win when the scoreboard showed us with fewer points and it never felt like a loss when we came out ahead. Anyone who ever competed in sports at any level knows what I’m talking about.

Exactly, play D and make them have to make a tough shot and keep the clock running. They miss there is not enough time left even if they get the rebound.

Yeah hopefully they are getting the guidance we had in organized sport, I don't know it seems weird at times the effort isn't there

We really blaming Refs? Wow. 2 pathetic performances in a row. Officiating doesn't make the top 2 problems we have. Awful transition defense and horrendous over-all D. Today had Maryland had their number 1 scorer, we're ran out of our own building. We need less fingers and more mirrors.

You're right, but the refs were horrible. And a lot of the bad calls (or no calls) went against Maryland. Those bad calls changed the game to Purdue's favor. It happens, so fans have a right to complain about it.

they didn't have their leading scorer and other than another portal doing us they are not a very talented team. Don't want to hear about refs neither, we had 2 fouls called on us in the 1st half ( not counting the 2 gimmes at the end of the half) we stunk it up today at home after a bad loss.

Jeez.....you guys whine more than my ex-wife. They won the game.....sometimes you just don't play your best. But good teams find a way to win, and that's what they did.
LMAO, Michigan put a beat down on this team on Thursday where we scored less than 60 points.. Instead of recognizing that and realizing they better play with more energy, they show up at home and score 62.

This isn't a case of Maryland playing out of their ass. They didn't have Ayala and only scored 61 points. No way Purdue should have played like this at home. 2 games in a row like that is indicator that something is wrong. If they don't show up next game at Northwestern, they will get beat...

To paraphrase Lou Holtz and several others, Maryland gives out basketball scholarships, too. Their guys played hard as hell and were really good. Tough year for them, but they are far from talent free, and they weren’t rolling over today just because their record said the game shouldn’t be competitive. Down 11, that game could’ve been over, but it wasn’t.

Their guards were extremely good, and they have plenty of talent.

2 games in a row where we scored less than 70 points. This was Maryland aying hard. This was Purdue playing exceedingly bad.

Did anyone else see Painter death stare the clock guys down after the game was over while on his way to shake hands with Maryland? Not sure if words were exchanged but I know for a fact if I was him something would of been said!
If I were the clock guy, I'd go ahead and remind him his product on the court today was a joke. He could kick rocks. He has no room to admonish anyone.

It's the second game at home where the clock was an issue. The clock operator has no moral high ground...

Sasha did inbounds, I believe.

Might have to take a more serious look at playing Edey and Williams together. Our offense has been woeful, and our defense can't get any worse. Also, it just doesn't seem Gillis has been getting boards like he was previously.

I thought it was EHJ, but from what people are saying I think you're right... Someone on reddit said the ref pointed/signaled that it had been a dead ball to Sasha and Sasha was looking the other way at the time... If that is the case, that seems like an extraordinary under-communication....

I’ll agree with you that the defense and effort needs to improve but those refs were really really bad!

I agree. The coaches also should have been informed.

Nor does Painter. That's 2 awful performances in a row. It's not an anomaly now. It's a trend. Our D is so bad that unless our offense makes up for it, we're ripe for the picking.

Why all the whining? Did lllinois play better than we did this week? today? No. Did Wisconsin play better yesterday than we did today? No. This is life in the Big Ten. Every year. Every team has their stretches. I'll take the way we played in the last 10 minutes. Every game is going to be a battle. And today has very little to do with how we play in the tournament. I do hope that we handle NW's pressure this week better than Illinois' "athletic" guards did today. You would be on full meltdown if our guards played like that.

I agree - every team in the Big 10 has had really bad games. They pulled this one out for a win. Time to move on

Is there a postgame interview with CMP that addresses the issue with the violation on our final play? I haven't been able to find one.
