Looking to next season

While MSU has beaten IU twice the last 2 years, IU beat UM their only game last year and split the previous year. Losing 2 of 3 isn't having someone's number.

Yes, I stand corrected. I was thinking of the infamous cutting-down-the-nets-after-getting beaten year. (snicker) That was UM too.

Sorry for the error. Getting old you know.

Right now I'm not trying to convince you of anything other than putting IU ahead of Purdue isn't a homer pick. I've now shown you a few different people who put out rankings/predictions for next year and they all have IU ahead of Purdue. I'm not saying they have always been right or will likely be right. All I'm saying is that it's not as absurd as you clearly think it is.

If you think it's a homer pick, so me where numerous people/writers/analysts think Purdue is going to finish ahead of IU because it clearly seems that the consensus pick is IU finishing ahead of Purdue. Is everyone who predicts this a homer?

Wasn't iu picked by everyone to finish ahead of Purdue last season? Maybe the hoosiers should just go ahead and cut down the nets, because at this time of year, we know that the pundits know how the season will turn out.

Michigan returns all players from a terrible team they are a fringe tourney team next season.

Huh? Michigan was 8-10 in conference last year with 4 OT losses and a 1 bucket loss at Bloomington. That with a roster that had zero returning starters from the previous season (after Walton and LeVert had season ending injuries) and only 3 non-freshmen. They played most of the conference season with a single scholarship player off the bench at the 1-4 spots on the floor and finished up by blowing out Illinois in the BTT and taking Wisconsin to the wire.

Next year? Derrick Walton is back and will be one of the 2 or 3 best PGs in the conference. Caris LeVert is back and will be one of the best guards in the country. Every other player of note is back. Add in transfer Duncan Robinson who's been shooting even better than Stauskas ever did in practices/scrimmages. Add in top 100 RS frosh DJ Wilson who redshirted with injury last year. Add in top 50 ish German Mo Wagner.

That's easily a top 25 team nationally and maybe better if all the freshmen from last year make some leaps forward. I mean they could return every starter from last year's team down the stretch (a team that played pretty well by the end of the year) and all 5 of them could come off the bench next season. Not many teams can trot out a 2nd unit that could go .500 in conference play.

And if you add Jaylen Brown to that who might be the #1 recruit in the country? That'd be a probable top 5 team nationally that would have the best group of perimeter players in the country.

Michigan will be fine next year. Certainly not a "fringe tourney team". Depending on Brown's decision they'll probably be somewhere between a 1 and 6 seed in the tourney.

As far as Snuuuuze's prediction not being a "homer" pick, I just want to point out in the interests fo historic accuracy that for the 2013-2014 prediction of B1G standings, made by him on 11/10/13, he had IU 5th and Purdue 7th. We all know how that turned out. Neither made even the NIT. IIRC, he also had Purdue finishing behind IU last year - which was also totally wrong.

You know what cracks me up about some of the visitors we get here, they swear up and down they don't care what we think yet they spend a large amount of time on this site trying to influence or change our opinion of their team.

Snuuuze, check out the front page of boilersports.com. You will find a screen shot of B1G predictions saved there made by IU fans, you included. You can read yours which was cited. (Do you really think that I would know the date of yours if I hadn't just read it there or, even worse, made up a dated prediction that did not exist? That is kind of stretching it.)

Three national sites have IU in the top 15 range, none have Purdue ranked. From ncaa seeding last year, the committee ranked Purdue one spot higher than IU....so basically an identical season. IU returns everyone and adds a 240lb burger boy center ( how that is identical to JJ as a freshman is funny).

Most casual observers would pick IU above Purdue next season

Identical seasons? That's a good one.

Purdue was seeded 36th, IU 37th. How much closer can you get?

They both lost their first games.

One game different in total record. Both had 4 wins vs top 50.

Perhaps there was a difference in third place and seventh. Yeah, that was part of the season too. The games Purdue lost were all close. In losses, not so much. Not even close to identical.

Ok just according to the men's selection committee then....non biased observers.

Conf records in a 14 team unbalanced schedule becomes a pretty useless barometer.

Do you want to hang a banner for keeping those games close? I don't know how you can honestly say the seasons were similar when we ended so close. The way each team got to the end of the season was different, but the overall end of season numbers (wins/losses/seeding/etc) were very similar.

I am getting a little confused here with the argument being made by IU fans that are visiting. In 2014-15, Purdue was tied for 3rd in the B1G at 12-6 while IU was 7th at 9-9. The diference was 3 games in league standings, but the teams should be considered equal in ranking despite the 4 spot difference according to the visitors because of NCAA placement. However, in 2013-14, Purdue finished last (13th) in the B1G at 5-13 while IU was tied for 9th at 7-11, a 2 game difference. IU fans pointed out that disappointing as their season was, they were clearly a way better team than Purdue, despite Purdue beating them in the only head-to-head matchup. So the argument made then was 2 games demonstrated a huge difference in quality but now a 3 game margin is meaningless. Plus, NCAA seeding is dictated by precluding early matchups between conferrence foes and geographic constraints of the pod system so that further can muddy the waters.

What gets me is the same folks lording over a 2 game margin then dismiss a 3 game margin now. Perhaps someone can explain this apparent logical inconsistency to me.

Well then compare where each team was heading after the OOC. If you see both as similar, I don't know what else to say.

Please try to keep up. We are talking Big Ten here. 12-6 and 9-9 are not"basically identical". Second, you are referencing the same people that predicted Purdue at the bottom of the Big last year. Third, I'd worry more about your team defense than filling a center position.

I'm well aware they did. They were extremely young last season, one of the youngest and least experienced teams in the country. No surprise they struggled at the start of the season. NJIT wasn't that bad last season, though. They won 21 games and finished the season with a KenPom rating far better than Rutgers and not far behind Nebraska and Northwestern. Losing to a team like that on a day they hit 65% of their 3 point shots isn't as big an upset as you'd think and Michigan had already lost DJ Wilson for the year at that point and Derrick Walton was already quite limited by his toe injury that eventually cost him his season.

A young team struggling early in the year? Shocking. But when you are that young and inexperienced, how you play in March is far more predictive of the following season than how you play in December.

Yes actually it is, no matter how you wanna spin it.

Would losing to Nebraska hitting 65% of their 3s be a massive upset?

It seemed like a massive upset at the time. Why? Michigan was ranked. They shouldn't have been ranked but they were. People also thought NJIT was terrible. They weren't. In hindsight it was a mild upset fueled by insane 3 point shooting. At the time it was a huge upset.

Now we have an intersting dichotomy in this thread: IU fan visitors are arguing that independent assessors like the NCAA can rank teams closely and thus outsider rankings are meaningful and we have Michigan fans arguing that rankings are flawed as in the case of their loss to NJIT. And all of this is occurring on a Purdue board.

And it all began as a simple post about who would place where next season. Amazing isn't it.

Hey, it's the offseason. The NJIT argument from the michigan dude is hilarious. It was a horrendous home loss. Period.

Purdue and IU were similar teams in some regards this past year. Their overall W-L records do indicate that. But Purdue was much better coached. Painter utilized what he had MUCH better than did Crean. Shocking, right? But to argue it much further than that is a little silly. Neither team accomplished squat in the post season. Both have much promise for the upcoming season although Purdue's team is still a little incomplete. I tend to agree with the media here; Purdue needs an Octeus level impact PG to have a legit shot at the B1G crown next year.

snu, I appreciate your enthusiasm and if you are really trying to have a logical discussion on here. Let me help you mature your conversation a bit so that it is not so painful. If we cared about what the media said, we can easily look it up ourselves. I hope you learned early on that the newspaper is never 100% accurate, let alone low budget opinion pieces written to generate money and conversation that are probably not based on much thought at all. Simply posting a worthless link is not a valid argument. If you'd like intelligent exchange from us, please type a well thought out statement with actual facts to back up your point. Remember, you are on Purdue territory, so there needs to be meat or people will think you're a troll. Better luck with your future posts.

When did Bryant gain 20 lbs? Everything I have seen is 220. Additionally, just because he is there, doesn't mean he will hold his own in the post. Vonleh was 220 coming into IU and how much time did he spend outside of the paint? From the videos online, Bryant has not played against many that were his size. He's going to have to learn to play some defense, and Crean has shown how much he values teaching that skill.

I get it. There were posters here that said putting IU ahead of Purdue next year is a "homer pick." I have been simply pointing out that it really isn't and that more than just IU fans are optimistic about IU. That's it.

I think the BIG will be much better next year as a whole and as we saw last year with our boilers, anything can happen. but as far as us and IU having almost identical seasons last year.... We beat you twice last year head to head! If we were so close as a team shouldnt we have split? I guess facts from actual game action are not relevant here. Just pluck some rankings and show us how closely matched each team was.

Good post. The problem is I don't think there is any fanbase out there that needs more affirmation than the IU fanbase. So the second anyone here says anything to the contrary we see an influx of obsessed peegs posters spending weeks telling us how "wrong" we are.

SNU,
You made the point, the horse is dead, you can quite beating it now.

They are just saying that the National pollsters habitually over rank IU and under rank Purdue. So no matter how many so called experts pick IU over Purdue if you look at the coaches, defense, and who is coming back compared to last year's results a very good case can be made that Purdue will end up with a better season than IU. So having a more intimate knowledge of IU and Purdue than the national "experts" it could be seen that ranking IU over Purdue is a "homer pick."

But that is why the game is played.

You have been reasonable but it might be time to accept you made your point and others still feel the same and move on to another discussion even here.

Fair enough man. Thanks for the post, and will do.

Hey, it's the offseason. The NJIT argument from the michigan dude is hilarious. It was a horrendous home loss. Period.

Perhaps you are correct and Michigan was a terrible team last season and will be lucky to sniff the NCAA bubble this season. Perhaps. Then again, perhaps it was a freak combination of NBA early entrants, injuries, and youth that lead to a 1 year blip for what had been the best program in the Big Ten the previous 3-4 years and they will be right back at the top of the conference again next season. Time will tell.

I suppose that your writings make sense to you. If we all drank too much cheap liquor, it would probably make sense to all of us.
