Kendall Transferring

It's easy to say numbers are skewed when you have no numbers to counter them.

Facts are facts, and P.J.'s 49-percent shooting from three and 4.1 assist-turnover-ratio are the facts of his performance this year against Big Ten opponents. He, in fact, ranked near or at the top of the Big Ten Conference in those categories. But you can't handle the ball or shoot from three enough when you're forced to spend nearly half of each game on the bench.

A freshman, especially when developing in a new position, rarely proves to be as valuable as an established senior, even one who's been shattered by his coach. Ideally, though, you'd have both and, more importantly, find use for both.

Lastly, if you were at the Co-Rec picking teams, who would you take first -- Stephens, Mathias or Cline? I sure wouldn't let the one with the better size, quickness and play-makiing ability walk out the door.

Of course not...I wouldn't let Mathias walk out the door. To say Stephens has more play-making ability is ridiculous since he hasn't done it outside of 1 game in three years.

It seems pretty typical for this fanbase to think someone is a savior when they choose to leave, yet forget the skewering they took on here previously.

I like Kendall and wish he would stay, but he wants more playing time and I respect that. Only thing I would say to that is he would have the playing time he wants if he put in the work to take the minutes from Mathias and Cline. And I think he is very capable of doing that and has some personal responsibility in that regard.

I wish he would stay, but I wish him well if he doesn't.

It's called Damned if you do, and damned if you don't.

As posted above, many topics here are issues made-up because someone doesn't have enough drama in their life. People come her HOPING that someone will have challenged their opinion so that they can attack them.

Whatever is going on is wrong, regardless of whether last week they wanted it to happen.

The picture is clear for me:

PG: PJ, C. Edwards, (Mathias if needed)
SG: Mathias, Cline, (Stephens if he stays)
SF: V. Edwards, Smotherman, (Stephens if he stays)
PF: Biggie, Taylor, (V. Edwards if needed and G. Eifert...who may be given a scholarship next year)
C: Haas, Biggie, Taylor (Can't wait to see how well Taylor does this year, big fan of him)

Of the above depth, PG, SF and C need depth......

I think we add the best player available in 2016 that can play any of the 2-4 spots......if Stephens leaves, then maybe we add two.

Then in 2017 add a true 5,4,3,2 and 1.....maybe even 2 5's and 4's.......with Haas, Biggie and Edwards possibly leaving after next year.

Key for next year will be the addition of an experienced and jack of all trades athletic 2-4 guy.

Boiler Up!

And by all accounts that player is Desmond Bane.

The forums today have evolved into a kind of baseball battery combination with bitchers and scratchers. On one hand we have those that bitch about every possible thing on the other we have the ones left scratching their heads because of the inability of the bitchers to hit any target and only throw wild pitches.

So we lost two end of season rotation players in AJ and Ray. Do we go 1 deeper next year with Carsen, Basil, and Taylor moving into rotation or do we go nine deep again?

Personally I think it depends on Basil. If he developed a consistent 3 or his game in general, I think that will impact how deep we go.

I kind of think JT is going to have a bigger impact than anyone thinks. The few times he has escaped the bench he's brought an instant injection of energy and enthusiasm to the mix. Think a few minutes of that a game will be a big lift.

Thank you, I appreciate that. As the weather improves, I have better ways to spend my time. Grandkids soccer, trips to national parks, mowing the yard, LOL. I see little point in trying to discuss experiences, or the things I've learned in over 40 years hanging around some damn smart basketball minds so that I can get called moron or idiot if I don't kiss the asses of those who need to attack others so they can feel smart. I can watch Nancy Grace if I want drama in my life. I have a T-shirt that says "You can't fix stupid." I thought it was just funny until I spent some time here. Now I know it's true.

I enjoy sports and coaching and strategy and recruiting and talent evaluation. I'd LOVE to spend time discussing these things with others who share my enjoyment. ... I don't enjoy being called stupid by someone who's eyes are better than a coach making $2mill, or even my eyes. Basketball is not a black and white game. There is room for many different thoughts. It is fast paced and the cliche' we all laugh about - "Oh NO! ... Oh, great shot" is so true.

I am from the generation that grew up with respecting others as a core trait. Unfortunately, I have not adapted to the lack of respect that is prevalent today. Just who I am.

The maturity level of most threads reaches 7th grade level within 5 posts. Just not high on my list of ways to spend my time.

Great job. I totally agree on the great ATHLETIC true slasher/creator 2-4. I don't think anyone leaves after next year, but that is a total unknown.

The only minor question I would let wander around my mind is that we "should/could/might" have Phinesee coming in '18. If he's as good as he's supposed to be, we might not need/want a great 1 in '17.

I think Taylor takes what Smotherman's role he had last season when he would come off the bench to provide a bit of a boost. Taylor will give spot minutes at the 5 for Haas or even the 4 for Swanigan if CMP wants to maintain the height advantage. However, a lineup I wouldn't mind seeing next season would be this:

G: Carson Edwards
G: Dakota Mathias
G: Vince Edwards
F: Smotherman
F: Swanigan

This lineup places 4 known shooters to have the ability to hit a three (albeit Carson is a bit of an unknown since he hasn't played in college yet) along with what would seem 2-3 players who have the ability to penetrate off the dribble (Edwards, Smotherman, Swanigan). That lineup provides the most flexibility on both sides of the ball but obviously Haas needs to play.

I hope Taylor is productive for us but he's unproven and has had injury issues up to this point. If a 6'8" guy that can rebound is available to us via grad transfer I'd suggest looking into it.

Agreed but don't forget he has had a chance to go against some of the best post players for 2 years to scrimmage and practice against. As good as in game experience is, one must not underestimate that value of that kind of experience for two years can provide a player. Just because Taylor hasn't played up to this point doesn't necessarily speak ill against his skill...rather I think it speaks volumes to the skills of Hammons, Haas, and Swanigan.

But even if you don't question his unproven ability, there are the injury concerns to consider. Just concerns me if he is the primary depth at both the 4 and 5 this year and we have nothing else.

I expect by the middle of the big season either Taylor or Smotherman will grab more pine time while the other takes his minutes.
Start:
Haas
Swanigan
V Edwards
Mathias
PJ
Sub 1a:
Swanigan
V Edwards
Smotherman
Cline
C Edwards
Sub 1b:
Taylor
Swanigan
V Edwards
Cline
C Edwards
After that who knows

Why not Smotherman starting @ the SG? I think he will see some time @ the SG in some situations. Maybe he has worked on his outside shot and scoring ability to overtake Mathias & Cline there?

Possibly Buck.....I am just going off known knowledge.

I hope Taylor and Smotherman are positive wildcards and they do amazing things next year.

Both should get big minutes.....

Very versatile line-up for Purdue next year.....

Don't count out energy minutes from Eifert either.....he will add depth in case of injury or foul trouble.

Taylor is who I am most excited to see unleashed!

I tried this idea a while back. In the end I concluded that he could do it if he could shoot around 35% from 3 but is more likely to be first sub at the 3 and 4 spots.

I would love to see Taylor explode with a combination of 3pt proficiency, post play, offensive rebounding, and running the floor. Don't want much do I?

I just don't see Smotherman playing many minutes at a forward position with the thinking that he will be effective against most B10 front court guys. I hope he has a better handle and can step out and shoot consistently. And guard the perimeter.

I'd be OK with 16 ppg on dunks,
This is what I missed from BS

Have you seen him lately. He has gotten big. Not taller, just much wider.

No I haven't noticed that. He's always had good hops though. That's a good clip of a fast break jam and great assist by Edwards. But I'm referring to post-up situations.

that was Bryson passing to him

It's footage from Smotherman's frosh season (might be the open scrimmage before the season really began). You can tell because Travis "Tacos" Carroll has a cameo in the short clip.

so any word on who is on Kendall/where he is considering?

I am having a hard time figuring out his value to others. He's pretty expensive (2 scholarship years for just 1 year of play) If he was immediately eligible he would probably be getting a lot of Big 5 conference interest.

I have no idea but I could picture him playing at a mid-major, Missouri Valley-type of school (Illinois State, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, etc.).

I wonder how close he is to graduating. My neighbor's kid had class with him, and says Stephens is a good student. If he can graduate in summer school, would he be immediately eligible, or does the process to apply have to begin now? If he does take summer school so that he can transfer, I imagine he will have to pay his own way, ala Macius.

Yeah, if he goes anywhere I think it'd be away from a Power-5 (or maybe a lower-level Power 5). I think he likes being near home (his parents are incredibly supportive - in a good way).

I'd like to see him return.

I would love to see him stay as well......time will tell and whatever works out best for everyone.

Good kid and great family.
