It first aired at 9:30 (ET) tonight. In one part, he was talking about the regional final game with Duke in 1994. He basically said (paraphrasing), "I can't make any excuses, Duke was the better team in that game but Glenn Robinson hurt his back the night before wrestling with a teammate." That's kind of a contradictory statement, isn't it?

I think he's saying considering a limited Robinson, duke played better. but people always do this in speech, it's like saying "no offense, but that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."

I wish Tim Miles wouldn't have been a guest on the same episode as Gene. He never shut up the whole time.

At the beginning, I think Lavin's narration said something to the effect of "I'll sit down with four coaching legends..." and then when they showed Tim Miles, I was like, "I think that's a little premature". He just needs to change the narration: "I'll sit down with four coaches...".

thanks I set future episodes to record again

really like this series
I imagine they try to mix it up, but
wish they had gene with jud and Tom Davis (last year) on at the same time

Wait a second...Tim Miles was the guy that stood out to you, opposed to Mike Davis?

There were two actual "legends" on the show, and two guys with great stories certainly, but in no way legends, never mind coaches of the same magnitude.

It was without a doubt the oddest pairing ever on that show.

It would have been nice to have Keady with a couple of his genuine contemporaries...someone already mentioned Jud and/or Dr. Tom, but easily could have had Lou Henson as well.

I always thought Glenn hurt himself when that one tall Kansas player #31 or #32 gave Glenn a hip check going for a rebound in the 2nd half and you could see Glenn came down on his feet awkwardly.

Mike Davis at least made it to the national title game. Knight's recruits or not, Davis was still their coach that season and played a role in them making it to the final game.

On last season's show, they had an episode with Tom Davis, Jud Heathcote, Gary Williams, and either Keady or John Beilein was the other coach. I think that's of which what the other poster is referencing.

Texas Southern's AD is pretty smart. Schedules pre-season full of Arizona's/Big Schools where they get their butt's handed to them and then in a very weak conference even Mike Davis can contend for a title ever year. Making the school a lot of money.

1) NO, what he said was Duke was the better team in that game. 2)He also said that Glen Robinson hurt his back. Those do NOT have to be contradictory at all.

Now maybe if Glen didn't hurt his back Duke might not have been the better team that game...that is open for discussion.

Steve Lavin prefaced his inquiry by saying "something that may have played a part in your team not going further that year". That might be true, but it's still an excuse.

I want to make sure I understand what you are saying and not say something that wasn't said or intended to be said. Are you actually saying that losing the player or the player's effectiveness in a player of the year, in the tourney, in a game with a very good team is an excuse? Think about it...are you really wanting to suggest that the diminished results of a player and his role on a team that created the conditions for being the player of the year is an excuse when hurt? Seriously?

It was just a couple of days ago talk on the forum was about Northwestern losing a starter...and IU losing OG and such...those two combined couldn't together stop Robinson and yet they are a reason to losing to so-so teams? Seriously? Losing those two has merit...particularly for Northwestern, but merit is a far cry from losing the player of the year? Tell me you mis-typed "excuse" and actually meant something else

No, I meant excuse. Gene Keady was notorious for making excuses, especially after NCAA Tournament losses (one example: Texas in 1990: complaining about Tony Jones getting fouled in the final seconds. the replays clearly showed that the blocked-shot was clean). There's a reason opposing fans started using the term "Excuse-makers" quite awhile ago.
