But a ol class mate of mine sent me a e-mail that its a strong rumor that Troy Calhoun will be our next head coach. Just something he has picked up at the coffee shop

This is admittedly my own personal preference but nothing would kill my interest in Purdue football more than becoming an option team.

He runs the option out of necessity. He has more offenses than that.

He makes sense, Bobinski didn't hire Paul Johnson at GT but worked with him. There is an example of an academy guy who has been successful at a P5.

I think Purdue could do better than Troy Calhoun but he wouldn't be a bad pick either. Posters are correct in that he runs the offense he does at Air Force out of necessity. Here is what he is working against at Air Force:

  • Academics. At Air Force, prospective players need to have at least a 3.5 high school GPA, a 25 on the ACT in all subjects, and a minimum of a 1200 two-part SAT score. Requirements are similarly rigorous at the other service academies. Lt. Col. Gaylord Greene, who works in admissions at Army, said coaches will often encourage recruits to take more core courses, since the school requires more of them for entry than most others do.
  • Height and weight requirements. They differ slightly by academy, but at Air Force, a 6'4 applicant cannot weigh more than 221 pounds for admission -- and must also not weigh more than that upon graduation. In some cases at the academies, athletes can be over the height or weight limits but must still adhere to stringent body fat restrictions. This makes recruiting offensive linemen very difficult. "I'd love to have a bunch of 320-pound guys with good feet," Calhoun said. "We've never had a 285-pound kid, which is very small for a Division I offensive lineman. We usually average 255 pounds with our offensive line."
  • Mandatory military service. Unlike players who sign a normal scholarship tender, athletes at the service academies sign on to serve in active military duty after college.

This rumor would also mesh well with the theory that the new coach was determined with a handshake deal prior to mid-season firing of Haze.

Also, he can only practice 15 hours a week, whereas non academies can practice 20 hrs a week.

@TC4THREE here is an article you might find interesting http://www.foxsports.com/college-fo...cademy-falcons-troy-calhoun-overlooked-072715

Thanks. Not saying that hiring him would be a mistake or even that hiring someone that would run the option would be a mistake. Just not the type of football I enjoy and I have a hard time believing we could ever win big (10+ regular season wins) with that type of offense. It's encouraging that he can do other things though if he ends up being the guy.

Ugh. I hate the option. I hate GT's option, I hated Nebraska's option, and I won't go watch it at Ross Ade. Course I grew up watching Campbell and Everett throw it around, then was in school when Tiller and Brees showed up, so maybe I'm biased.

Our program's image has but one poker chip left and it is the cradle of QBs. Even Hazell could recruit decent QBs here. So, yes, by all means, let's run the option.

The offense this guy runs (veer, not option) is the basis for what Oregon, Baylor, OSU, Clemson, etc run. If he comes in and runs what Briles or Sweeney does, id be all for it.

Or that Bobinski had enough information that he felt he had two or three pretty solid guys who would say yes to the right package. That would give him the luxury of firing Haze and casting a wider net through the search.

What's the difference between "veer" and "option"?

More or less interchangeable, but i consider the true option to be what Navy and GT do. Whereas the veer (should) use the option to set up PA, see OSU.
Running the veer with spread and wc elements is a lot like Baylor/Tulsa's attack. Not sure that is Calhoun's bag but its the next logical thought given the landscape of CFB currently.

who?
Right or wrong, that's what a vast majority of the fan base is going to say. And, just on name alone, won't anyone excited about the rebuild.

admittingly, I don't know much about Calhoun but looking over his resume, he did get Air Force to a bowl almost every year and even though it's a run O they ranked 15th in passing efficiency last year. Also like his age , 50. I know he's on our short list, but I prefer Brohm in regards to these plan B options. As with all new coaches there will be some attrition, if we get Calhoun, I think Sindelair will leave.

Why would Sindelar leave?

don't think his style would fit Calhoun's O, just a guess.
If Calhoun comes to Purdue he's not running the Veer. Hell Sindelar stayed here and I think Shoop and Hazell we're picking offenses out of a hat
