From a UConn forum

“My friend is a Boiler and he is also not sure about Brohm yet. He yerns for the Brees/Alstott days. An Illinois-type game with us having a better chance of pulling out a W sounds about right.”

i didn’t see a lot of “they’ll blow us out cause we didn’t play last year.” Mostly “just like Illinois, we just gotta make a play at the end.”

interesting

Yeah, with the Alstott comment we can safely dismiss his opinion.
He’s giving a second hand account from a guy he knows who is probably a casual Purdue fan …

regardless, their perception seems to be “yeah, just like Illinois (except unlike illinois) maybe we make a play and win this one.”

I didn’t say they were right. I don’t think they know what’s coming. Good chance George lives in their backfield… like signs a lease. I just thought their perception was interesting

Not to mention that Brees and Alstott are pretty different timeframes with different coaches/styles/etc.

That's like a Bulls fan missing the Jordan and Rose days.
Oh f-ing Jesus … the guy is giving a second hand account from a friend of his who doesn’t know shit.

I found it interesting that they think they’ll be driving at the end of the game to win it

If Purdue doesn't win the UConn game, they should immediately shut down the football program.
Pat I’m not sure how long you’ve been posting here but I wonder if half of the homers were here when davek and others were here. We’d be playing SE Missouri state and they’d be like “we need to fear this team.. What about their 6’6” receiver Chaunte Ahamefule!?”

my first posts I read here were when we beat notre dame in 03 then had some more nice wins and general consensus was “well.. enjoy it while it lasts cause Purdue is almost never this good.” And I was the one like “who says we can’t be this good all the time!?” And they asked when I graduated. I said 01 and they all laughed like “you’ll see”

Don’t be kissy. You posted the opinion knowing it was f**king stupid

Lmao 🤣.. where is the downvote.

no, I think the Purdue fan referenced is stupid. I also think it’s stupid to think they’ll be driving for the win. But I find the fact that they think so interesting

Old randy claims he has 11 OL ready to play

If purdue doesnt absolutely destroy uconn id be worried if i was a purdue fan. Uconn is a division 2 team disguised as division 1 fbs

Then I guess I say who cares about the perception of uninformed people.

No you’re right he got me, but I still find it interesting from the standpoint of.. is that how low our cred is?
I can’t agree more. Our cred is bad. There is no reason to fear Purdue. Until we string positive winning seasons more than two years in a row, we are gimmicky without a running game. Opposing teams will have our defense cave late in the game, and special teams screw it up for a loss. Tell me I’m wrong.
Want that narrative to change, but it is up to coaches and players to change that mind set. Don’t tell us, show us!

Yes. We really miss the days of Alstott.
The team was Alstott. It was impressive to watch him go into a gang tackle pile, still plow and bounce his way out to a TD. Darn near comical to see him have nearly 200 yard days and much of it was his own 2nd, 3rd and 4th efforts to keep breaking tackles.

Perception is what it is because we haven't been ranked in like 14 years. This isn't a BAD football program but 1. has room for improvement and 2. knows what it is like to get to good, but issues sustaining that.

You can crap on this team all you like but its going to be the most talented we have had on the field in many many years.

Just need to A. stay healthy and B. have the coaches get the most out of what they have.

I question your call about most talented: I think there's talent at certain positions: WR, TE, DE. But it's lacking in other areas QB, RB, OL,
Purdue will need to avoid injuries to key players and have other guys play above their rankings.

Yeah, with the Alstott comment we can safely dismiss his opinion.

Alstott played while I was in college. I knew Brees, great guy, better QB, but he was not my favorite player of all time, Alstott was and will probably always be, that said, man did we suck during the Coletto era, lol (one of my best friends played in that era, and Alstott is still my favorite player, lol)

Not crapping on this team. They should be a lot better this year. However, Purdue has been a bad football program for at least the past 10 years, with maybe the exception of Brohm's 1st and 2nd season. When you have a terrible losing record, like this team has had for the past 10 years, you're a bad program. Hopefully it will get turned around.

I'm not denouncing the greatness of Alstott. He was a stud in both college and the NFL. I just don't long for the team success we had in his era. If we could have him (the 18-20 year old version) suit up for Purdue this season, we'd all take him and be better for it. But it shows that a good rb/fb can only do so much when the players and coaches around him were as limited as they were when we had Alstott.

Didn’t Danny Hope go 7-6 one season with a bowl win?

Danny Hope 2009-2012 22-27
Patrick Higgins 2012 0-1
Darrell Hazell 2013-2016 9-33
Gerad Parker 2016 0-6
Jeff Brohm 2017-present 19-24

I'm a diehard Purdue football fan. Every year I convince myself they're going to be better. But when you look at the facts, for the past 10 years or more, this has been a bad football program.

It certainly was under D-Haze and Parker.

It was under Hope. It was under Hazell. And to date, it is under Brohm.
Your definition of “bad football” is different than mine. I was in school when Fred Akers was coach. That was bad football. Colletto was a bad coach too. We regularly got blown out. Hope got blown out fairly often.

I only remember two games where Purdue was not competitive under Brohm. At Minnesota in a driving snowstorm and the bowl game vs. Auburn. Losing to BIG teams by a TD or less is not bad football. It’s not winning football.

You’re blind if you can’t distinguish between D-Haze, Akers, and Colletto vs Brohm. It’s a night and day difference. This program is competitive, but Brohm needs to start winning more regularly. Overall our recruiting has been as good as it’s been in years, especially when you factor in transfers.

He’s made massive changes on the defense with an experienced, aggressive, well-liked staff and has brought in a bunch of new players, many of whom seem to be poised to be major contributors this coming season.
