Hoosiers hire Tom Allen as permanent HC

He has an underrated resume (alongside Hugh Freeze during a time of recruiting dominance and possibly some part of the current USF success), but you have to wonder if his elevation may be contractual.

I do wonder why IU didnt go after someone with head coaching experience at the college level.I wonder if IU fans would still be happy with Allen as defensive co ordinator if Purdue hadnt had committed two stupid penalties, the delay of game on the one yard line, and King punching that guy in the third period. We will never know.

IU is notorious for poor defense. With Tom Allen we went from 105 to 38th in total defense at the snap of a finger. He's been successful everywhere he has been.

If you had to hire someone who had coached in the Indiana high school coaching ranks in the past 10 years, would he have even have been in your top few choices? I'm not expert but Kevin Wright comes to mind first and then I kept hearing noise about the New Pal coach recently. This guy seems to have done a fine job as their DC this year though so who knows. He might do ok. I'm just relieved they aren't going after Fleck or Brohm.

You just lost a great offensive mind. How do you plan on replacing that?

I can't argue....so, the staff stays together...*Until the bowl game

asterisk deliberate

Tom Allen was the best coach on that staff. Wilson is a good Xs and Os coach on offense but man, his playcalling at times was head scratching. Special teams was always a disaster. Defense sucked untill Tom Allen got here. IU replaced a coach that went 26-47. They didn't take a step back, here.

One step back would put them at about our level so you better hope not.

For Indiana, it worked out ok with Wilson with back to back bowls...

My point is that I doubt any Purdue fans are nervous about this move. If I had to pick between you keeping Allen or going out to look for a coach on the open market, I'd pick you keeping Allen. He's been a coordinator for a short time and didn't have the experience Kevin Wilson had. It's a risky move on your end.

I completely agree. Allen wasn't going anywhere. Why not test the waters? Lazy move on Glass' part. My brother is IU Alum and football fan (I know - hard to believe) and he is furious. If you google Allen, he's never held a high position except at Ben Davis HS.

It's possible that Allen doesn't pan out. But Wilson was 26-47 as a Head Coach and 23 of those wins were against bad teams. Maybe Glass saw more upside with Allen.

How did Wilson compare historically to other IU coaches? He got you to back to back bowls for the first time in 20+ years right?

There's never a guaranteed formula. Barry Alvarez came to Wisconsin in the early 90s and they had done absolutely zero. They were perennially at the bottom of the league along with several other rotating teams. Dave McClain had some marginal success before his untimely passing. Alvarez had no head coaching experience. He built that program from the ground up.

Now, Wisconsin is standing on 24 seasons of solid football to the point that they can go through Bielema, Andersen and now Chryst in a short span and still not miss a beat.

Darrell Hazell was a HC.

Nothing is guaranteed with any of them.

I agree with this 100%. Nothing is guaranteed. Many of you were drooling over Darrell Hazell when he was hired and how did that pan out? And he had coaching experience. Who had ever heard of Dabo Swinney before he was elevated from WR's coach to head coach at Clemson.

Drooling? I don't think I'd go that far.

10 hours... what is taking you guys so long...jk
Did you hear your new coach in the late presser? Swigs water and fidgets like Crean, sounds like an absolute idiot, and there ain't enough room in Bloomington for the three egos....Allen, Crean, and Dead in the Head Fred. Those should be some doozies of staff meetings.

Sounds like a particular poster on here.

Was interested in hearing the Boiler slant on this situation given your current coaching search so I stopped by for a peek. I was enjoying an insightful, thoughtful discussion and then came across your word-drool. Who would have imagined.... Ducati and another mindless anti-IU rant??? I cant' believe these guys haven't kicked your ass out of here by now.

Well, it goes both ways. IU had drive killing penalties and threw 4 picks that dramatically changed field position. Defense basically won the game for IU.
Personally, I thought Purdue was better this year than last and IU's offense was terrible in redzone efficiency.
Sh@$ happens in rivalry games.

I guess at least we have an AD who is finally willing to get rid of coaches that physically abuse their players. We put up with that for 30 years...hopefully that is over.

Also, how many more Bucket games can you lose in a row? It's not even fun anymore. P.S. how was that Louisville basketball game?

Your bucket dominance will soon end. With a competent coach, we shall resume our dominance in the series. Even with our worst team in decades, you barely squeaked out a win at home against us. Hazell being fired was the worst outcome for IU fans because they know a competent coach can get us back to respectability pretty fast.

How do you know that Allen isn't a competent coach? All he does is turn around bad defenses in 1 year.

Good luck with that.

I think he will be good on defense but I think your offense could take a hit. Wilson was an offensive guru.

Exactly. If he hires a good OC, they will be fine. IU has never had a problem finding someone to put together an offense. It's always been about defense. The reality is, that Glass didn't want to lose the guy that finally made an impact on defense. Allen has a good scheme and he knows how to make adjustments. He impressed me all year.

Do you really think you'll continue to be better than us for an extended period of time?

It depends on who you hire. Jeff Brohm would be a decent hire, but his philosophy is to outscore the other team. He'd make Purdue a bowl team but he's not Joe Tiller.

This made me laugh. Would it be better to hire a coach who had a philosophy of scoring less than the other team? Is that what Fred Glass and IU are hoping for?

<note - just having fun....I understand your point....was just reading your statement as written and it made me laugh>

Allen makes sense from a continuity standpoint. It's not like they are promoting internally off a 2 win program. In the grand scheme of things, 6-6 and consecutive years of bowl eligibility is worth putting on your resume in that program. Also decreases the chances of de-commitments from a recruiting standpoint. Splashy hires are usually not kind to football programs in Indiana not named Notre Dame.

Now see, this is where I don't agree. Wilson developed guys on offense but he was far from a guru and this season, with him in full command of the offense, he didn't earn his paycheck. IU finished 14th nationally in offense in 2015 and 51st this year. Basically, middle of the pack. Purdue was somewhere around 78 this season in total offense.

But, look at teams below IU in offense in 2016: Wisconsin, Penn State and Minnesota. All had solid seasons.

Our good teams have been offensice

I think that can be attributed to Lagow being erratic/not nearly as good as Sudfeld and a lot of injuries on the offensive side of the ball for you guys.
