Homestead(FLoyer) vs Westfield(BSmith)...

Smith is the kind of kid who, as a coach, you observe him the first few days of practice, then you realize you can go work with other players, this kid's going to get it.
Kid epitomizes the definition of Floor General...he knows where everyone is supposed to be, and, he is not shy about getting them there if they are not there...at both ends.

Look, I have no idea what he will do at Purdue, but, I can say with every ounce of confidence that I have, that this has nothing at all to do with ability or coachability or talent.

I would want this kid on my team...any team...the fire that he has, the motor that he plays with...the desire to be great...the willingness and desire to be in the spotlight, yet, completely unselfish at the same time...like say, I love his game and what I have seen.

I hope more than anything, that I'm 100% wrong on Smith and that in 3 years, I'm talking about how good the crow tastes and how grateful I am that he's at PU.
But, despite a guy dominating at the high school level (I'm sure a lot of great articles were written about the kid who was Mr B a few years ago and ended up at Samford in FL, now at BSU I believe?) it's just hard for me to get excited about another sub-6 ft guard who's not an elite athlete and who not other D1 coaches thought was worth a scholie.
Again, I hope I'm 100% wrong.
I think Smith IS an elite athlete though, isn't he?

Kid is throwing down in-game, alley-oop jams. You can just see the wiggle and explosiveness he has in his game and the elevation he has on his shot.

Hunter and IT never had/do not have any of that.

the kid is who you're talking about. The end result is the same, regardless your intent.
This is big boy basketball. If you don’t want to be scrutinized on an anonymous message board, go to a lower profile school where the fans don’t care.

This should be the link for the Carmel vs Westfield sectional championship tonight. Live look at Smith if you want.

I guess it’s just the main page but you can find the stream here:

Better yet. His drive and work ethic will be contagious. Gillis and Smith pushing their teammates will make the team better.

It's nice to know that the culture of loving the game and putting in the work will not be ending anytime soon. Going back to Rapheal Davis, you have guys like Mathias, Swanigan, Carsen, Trevion, and now Ivey who were by all accounts gym rats and that string isn't ending anytime soon.

He's been at least 6 ft for over a year now, it's been well documented...

And offers don't mean anything because we have only know what offers a player receives if they post about it. He's a lifelong Purdue fan and if he knew the Purdue offer was coming then he probably would have told the other schools that he's committing to Purdue or at the very least not post about offers

Actually, the offer list is very important. And from a player perspective, it’s a badge of honor.

Smith grew up an Indinia fan...but, they did not have/show the same interest as Painter/Purdue.

He is indeed at least 6', and, he can play...led Westfield to their first ever Sectional championship, and, dominated the Sectional...he was outstanding in all 3 games.

How is Smith on the defensive end? Honest question, but I would think his athletism and stout frame could allow him to be a great on ball defender.

Westfield beat the defending state champs, Carmel. Waddell was on that team last year.

Maybe like an Aaron Craft? That would be high praise indeed if he were anything like him.....but he seems to be the kind of player who would embrace that....if it's possible.

Way down the road, though......from now.

Congrats on Sectional champs; good luck to them in the Regionals.

Crazy quick hands and comes as no surprise in that he has such a great understanding of the game, but, he is great at sneaking in from weak side or making a play by coming over...he will get stronger I think, but, he is physical...he guards bigger kids at times...he was guarding Fishers' center at times in the first game and had no problem being physical in that matchup.

I don't know how he will fare in college...he will be small per se, and, he will be overmatched at least early in his career against some, but, he will battle for sure...and, he will be better as he continues to mature physically.

He definitely is like Craft...for sure at the HS level...but, he is not as physically strong as Craft was...Craft was a QB (and really good one) in HS, ala Kramer. He plays with the same type of intensity and effort though.

My middle son lives in Westfield and his wife has Braden in one of her classes. They are both IU grads. My son is a doctor while his wife is a high school science teacher. They're avid IU fans.
They cannot speak higher of the young man. They have been discussing his character, personality, and basketball ability for some time now, and they speak of him in glowing terms. He's a great kid who turns into a beast on the basketball floor.
Well, he's not 6-5 but neither are other great NBA players. Chris Paul is one I have mentioned on here before, who is 6-0. And he's a future Hall Of Famer.
Braden will really help Purdue next year at the point guard position. They're going to need it.
To me, it's just obvious.
Bonefish just needs to see it happen. Nothing wrong with that.

You know, T.J. McConnell, point guard for the Pacers has seen the same kind of doubt play out in his career.
T.J. was not well recruited out of high school although he was 3A player of the year averaging 34 pts/8 reb/9 asst as a senior. He took a scholarship to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh because no one else wanted him. He was at Duquesne for 2 years and transferred to Arizona, where he sat out a year due to transfer rules.
He began play at Arizona in the 2013-14 year and was Cousy award finalist and ALL PAC 12 2nd team. These accomplishments were repeated his senior year. At Arizona, he was a star.
He then was an undrafted rookie, signing with the Philadelphia 76ers. But he made the team and received votes for 2015 NBA Rookie Of The Year.
T.J. now has signed a lucrative contract with the Pacers because at 6-1, he just gets the job done. And he's been rewarded.

Let's give Braden a big Purdue welcome when play starts next year. (he was all set to go to Belmont) You're going to be glad Coach Painter Brought him in.

Good info. Thanks for sharing.
But, it’s a big stretch to say “well, so and so is only 6’ and he plays in the NBA”. While true, you’re talking about the elite of the elite. Those guys are by far the vast exceptions. I hope I’m 100% wrong on Smith. But, I’ve seen enough small Purdue guards get physically dominated that another guy similar in stature to IT is cause for concern.

I watched the second half of the Westfield/Carmel game. Smith does have a bit of Craft/Davison in him. Cagey. Good court awareness. Good shot and good range. Fiery. Seems to have a quick step and acceleration to get by his defender (announcers said on one occasion that the defender was the quickest person on the floor FWIW). Definitely a vocal leader. Opponents will not like him.

He definitely thrives at the HS level as the Alpha. Will be interesting to see how he integrates into a CMP team first system and is young man among grown men. Looking forward to seeing him in Gold and Black.

What has kept the big schools from recruiting Smith? Could it be his size?

From my limited view in seeing random clips, he has a very high Give a Damn meter and high hoops IQ.

So we can't compare his ht and wt to successful players, only to guys that didn't do so well?

I know what your reservations are. I just don't think you're giving him a fair shake.

So, we disagree a little bit on this one.
I’m just going by the metrics and history. There’s a reason there’s not many sub 6’ guards at big time P5 level programs or in the NBA. Sure, there’s a few and we can point them out, but they’re the exceptions. Maybe Smith will be the exception or he’ll be a bench player behind Gibbs.

Well said. I love TJ, he's energy personified.
He makes everyone around him play better. They know they better be watching for the ball at all times or their likely to get smacked in the face.
You gotta LOVE that and what it does in terms of motivation to move and get open.
If you do, you WILL get the ball.
If Smith can match him I'll be thrilled.

You could see it in Carsen just with how he carried himself from the moment that he arrived...

That guy oozed confidence...
You could see it clearly in his hs tapes as most of his shots were contested, 1 on 1 stuff. Most hs shooter reels are full of wide open shots getting net or dunks. Carsens were of sometimes amazing shake and bake to get a clean look. It was obvious immediately that he had quickness skills that were unique.
