When he is playing like he did today, he has to play more than 15 minutes. They could not stop him and he was drawing fouls on their bigs. He was a force and could have been the difference. Painter needs to see that.

I thought the same thing too. It was working and we just went away from it. I understand having a game plan and executing it, but in basketball you have to make adjustments in real time. When we get in trouble in a game we don't make enough substitutions in my opinion. Nonetheless, if we just had made our free throws, there would be no second guessing necessary.

I'm not going to start coaching, that is Matt Painters job. I did notice that as soon as Haas left the game, Michigan began driving the lane in hopes of getting Biggie to foul. Haas played a big role today and who knows if we would have even been in overtime had he remained in the game the last few minutes of reg... That moment is gone so move on to the NCAA tourney

Probably because DJ Wilson scored 18 first half points with Haas guarding him. I'm a Michigan fan, and, when you look at the stat sheet, it's hard to see Michigan winning. 6-25 three point shooting, 13 turnovers are way out of whack for Michigan. A lot of those missed threes were good looks. What Michigan did well was limit Purdue's three point shooters looks. Irvin did a great job on Dakota, giving him no space. I like C. Edwards a lot. He hit shots. Cline got no looks. Thompson one or two. To me, that was the key.

The key was you played great Free Throw defense. You held us to 6/13 from the line. Nobody has done that to us all year.

Bingo. For as effective as Haas was on offense, he couldn't guard anyone on the other end.

That was certainly a factor. We lost close ones to Minnesota and Northwestern where we missed a lot of FTs. But there are lots of if onlys in an OT game. This game doesn't come down to a few free throws if other things were different. Don't forget that Thompson made a half court shot.

BS Wilson didn't get all 18 against Haas!

Maybe not all. Some came on put-backs. But DJ was isolated quite a bit on Haas, and Haas could not guard him. Too slow.

You need to watch the game again. Wilson got hot and made two driving spin moves on Haas for baskets and then he shot two threes. I don't remember him getting one rebound when Haas guarded him. In the second half, Wilson missed his 3 and when he drove for the spin Biggie picked his pocket. Haas had his way on all three centers and drew fouls on them. Overall, Michigan curtailed their driving when Haas was in the game.

You are right in that Michigan did a good job on guarding the 3 point shot. Purdue should have gone more with Haas, Biggie and Vincent in the game taking turns posting down low. Vincent has been doing great posting low recently, but had trouble against 6'10".

P.S. Refs call a lot of touch fouls on Haas, so he pulled up on one of the drives by Wilson, because he knows if he fouls he gets pulled.

It's really not complicated. PJ makes 2 FT's and the game is over.

Exactly! Wagner and Wilson were 2 out of 9 from 3 point land. Let them shoot away. Wilson did get hot and when that happens you change up. When he cools down, you let him throw it up again. Isaac's problem was 1 out of 4 from the line, which is not like him.

That's the 10 points by DJ that got Michigan the lead at the end of the half after trailing by 9. Never said that Haas wasn't a problem for us inside. He was. My point is that what he gives on offense is taken away at the other end.

My strength was D, but sometimes a player got hot against my style of D. I always agreed for the coach to put another teammate on him. However, in the 2nd half, Haas did not play full minutes after Wilson went cold shooting 3's and Matt figured out to double Wilson when he went into a spin move. Haas not only was scoring, but he was drawing fouls and wearing out your big men.

Haas needs more minutes when he is so effective offensively. He was Purdue's #1 option in offensive effectiveness.....and when he is on....Painter might consider cutting him some defensive slack for the benefit of team scoring.....

Haas is also one of our top defenders. Do you realize that the op does not get as many layups and short jumpers when Haas is in the game?

Against a spin drive center, Matt figured out last game to send a double team defender and when the post spins, he gets his pocket picked. Let the op's center shoot 3 pointers and if he makes two, then switch off Haas to the PF.

Keep in mind - Donnal and Wagner both were limited in minutes because of fouls. I think that allowed Haas to be more effective because they weren't playing. They saved most of their minutes, particularly Wagner's for the second half (Wagner played 13 of the 20 after only playing 4 in the first half). So that's probably why you didn't see too much of Haas in the second half.

But needless to say, it was nice to see Haas play well. Not all of his shots were easy either, he had a couple real nice moves/shots.

They both picked up fouls because of Haas as did Wilson. I think Donnal got two.

Yup, both had 2. But they both sat a lot - which gave Haas some time to work. Wagner didn't sit in the second half.

I am not processing your point. Haas played the 1st half against all three of them and did well on O against all 3.

You also made me remember Haas challenged Wagner on his throw down dunk and deflected it just like he did earlier against Bridges' of MSU throw down dunk. Highlights of Haas' D should be all over Purdue's web site, so teams we meet in the tournament can see. When Haas is in the game, op lay ups and short jumpers dwindle for a reason, even though Haas is not an AJH shot blocker.

While I would have liked to see Haas play a bit more and played well in limited minutes until they were in foul trouble, he's still limited long term against those match ups. Wagner played 4 minutes in the first half - not sure how you can judge how someone would play against someone long term. Haas played a chunk of minutes in the first half, but we were still losing at halftime, so it's not like we built up this 10 point halftime lead with him in there and then we decided not to play him. It's funny that people complained we had a slower guy on Wagner in the first game (Swanigan) and how that was dumb - but now people are clamoring for Haas to be on him? An even slower guy?

I mean at the end of the day, there was no great answer. Haas was a liability on defense and his free throw shooting was not helpful. I was very happy to see him play well and hope he continues playing with confidence.....and hopefully we won't play Michigan again this season! lol

People who criticized Biggie's D on Wagner do not know what they were talking about. Wagner got hot, so you switch Vince on him. Wilson got hot against Haas, so you switch Haas out. If their big men want to shoot 3's, let them. Once hot, then you challenge them. Until then, let them shoot. Haas is our best defender down low. He needs to play more - no ifs ands or buts about it. If Haas played more against Michigan, we win. We should beat Michigan 9 out of 10 times. Ironically, we lost two, because in each game each big man got hot. Big deal! We should have kept feeding the post and let Biggie and Haas score 50. They are too strong for the Michigan big men and they would foul out. Stupidly, we tried to match up and they bottled up our 3 point shots and we played into their hand. Posters are saying Biggie had a bad game, but we stopped going into the post to him. In the beginning, he was scoring against their center. Think about him against the PF. For that matter, any PF in the country.

We have arguably the strongest and best front line in basketball when we play Vince, Biggie and Haas. The best 3 point shooters in Cline and Mathias and the best slasher in Carson. We have the best role PG's in PJ and Spike where they move the ball without turnovers. If their D doubles down low, we burn them from 3. If the D covers our 3's (like Michigan), we burn them in the post. Not many teams should be able to stop us. Matt is a great coach. He recruits good kids that play hard. They know their roles and are unselfish. Matt makes great adjustments at halftime. My criticism is that he needs to quit over thinking and use Haas more, instead of worrying about match ups. Ironically, Wilson went cold from the outside in the 2nd half and had his pocket picked by Biggie on his spin move against Haas. Matt gets credit for coming up with the solution, but for some reason did not play Haas enough in the second half. I am hoping Matt's plan is a sneak attack where he unleashes Haas in the tournament or maybe Haas has an problem that he re-injured and needed to sit.

The criticism about not playing Haas more is an interesting discussion. But you lost to a pretty good team with a lot of options on offense. Wagner was held in check, but DJ went off. Against Minnesota, Wagner went off. The guy on your roster who I'd want to see more of is C. Edwards.

Yes, Michigan has a good team and if things go well they hopefully will make the sweet 16. However, Purdue has a great team and if things go as planned we are expected to make the sweet 16. However, our expectations are for things to go well and for us to make the final four. The difference is that Michigan has good outside shooting. Purdue does too, BUT we also have an inside presence that we never showed you guys.

I agree Carson is quick, athletic and fun to watch. We need to insert his energy into the lineup on both O and D. The good news is he is only a Freshman.
