Between his insider stories and messages to the fans, Steve Scheffler gave one of the best presentations ever -- right on target -- no surprise from a .685 career shooter. Mackey rocked. I hope the players got to visit with him -- he can light a charge.

Also great to see Coach Keady on hand and one of the loudest cheers all night for Coach Brohm.

if you find a video please post it. I tried to send it to my nephew by phone...well most of it and couldn't get it through. I was shocked how thin Steve appeared...much closer to Tom's body when he played...

if someone will supply an email address, I'll send about 4+ minutes of the speech. I wish I could rotate it 90 clockwise, but can still catch some good parts. I'll send it from one of my accounts if someone posts an email that will post it here

Steve Scheffler is one of my all-time favorite Boilermakers and is another tremendous ambassador for our beloved school.

During a chance meeting I had with him when attending Purdue Basketball Camp he couldn't have been friendlier or more engaging. It was gratifying to watch such a decent individual and great example of a student-athlete win Big Ten MVP in 1990.

So, as he said to many an official at the free throw line, "Thank you," Steve!

I have a better graphics but file is 417mb and too large to send. If there was a FTP site of something I could upload. Otherwise you will get the 22 mb poorer graphic version ...or should already have it...
Could you just post it on YouTube? I was there and saw it myself, but that would seem an easier option than email.

never did that before, but let me try

Right there with Rowinski. No telling how good his brother, Tom might have been had he not been playing behind John Garrett, both greats from my era.

sorry for not thinking about this sooner...and was moving the phone due to people moving in front of me to get some food...
Thanks for posting/sharing it...it is something that any fan of Purdue basketball would/should appreciate, and, those that had the pleasure of watching Steve or knowing him would appreciate it even more...he was a great player, but, was/is an even better person...and he is yet another great representative of Purdue University!

I probably played too much ball in the co rec when I was in school...that and shooting pool. Back then the players outside the season (and the freshman team too) would play...and in the summer...maybe the courts behind the sears in the evenings. Anyway I told this before but I had Dan McDermont (sp?) on my team (or better yet I was on his team) and Tom Scheffler was on another team as the bigs and a shot was taken and I was just outside the lane went up for the board (back then I could jump a bit) to haul it in and Tom just reached over above me and took it from me and I remember when I hit the court thinking ...what am I doing with these guys...they're just toying with people like me. Tom was a better jumper than Steve, but Steve sure made the most of his abilities. Those guys sitting on the bench...they're tough players as well...

yes, I will send this to my nephew that always liked Steve now that I learned how to post on youtube. Steve was a gentle giant...

Scheffler and Jim Rowinski are the two players (IMHO) who made the biggest improvements over the course of their careers. Scheffler was slow-footed and, like most freshmen, unsure of himself and seemingly often out of place on the court while Rowinski was a long, lanky (hard to believe) freshman who rarely saw the court and looked out of place when he did. To think BOTH of them went on to win Big Ten MVP awards makes their transformations all that much more amazing.

Tom Scheffler and Dan McDermott and Mike Steele all lived in my unit in Tarkington but on a different floor. Watching Tom and Dan play air hockey on one of those full size tables at the pin ball place near Math Science was amazing as with their length their hands would be tangling over the puck at center line. Bo was upset when Steve chose hoops at Purdue over FB at UM. I like to remind my UM friends about that wise decision.

Since some people continued to post their email...I'll post the video again in case these people didn't read the whole thread

it seemed like Mike and Garrett were always around each other in Lambert. Anyway, in case you haven't kept up on MIke other than his coaching at Depauw

Well, I learned something and now I'll probably be even more dangerous
THAT is what a motivational speech should sound like. (1) He gave everyone his humble self-assessment of how far he'd come; (2) Included anecdotes that his audience recognized; (3 )Made references to why we are on the same team, and it's a GREAT team; (4) Spoke about the challenges of Calculus. Anyone who attended Purdue can surely relate to that!; (5) Outright enthusiasm that makes you like him right away. Being dyslexic, I believe he turned himself into Academic All-Big Ten, no small feat.

As others have mentioned, what an ambassador!

If he were from New York, they'd prob make a movie about him.....or nominate him for US Senate.

Thanks for posting!

Wasn't Steve the one who said "thank you" to the referees when they handed him the ball at the free throw line?
Was always a class act, and a great representative of a boilermaker

Or brothers-in-law like Doug Lee and Todd Foster. Although 40 years ago you would have been aware that Brian and Steve Walker were going to play for Purdue☺️

absolutely...but in my haste and doing a few things....my mind isn't as sharp to remember all I should...AND sometimes THAT is a blessing!

That's because they were both either PE or REC majors-most of their classes were in Lambert
Yes, I know....back then I was going to coach and in Indiana you had to be a PE major. Employment with a P.E. degree and conversations wiht research engineers at Cummins led me down a different path...hence i became a lay coach. Today, I'm not sure I would even need the waiver for basketball.
