Great loss

We have an abundance of learning to do. The three freshmen and three sophomores need playing time. Right now, we have to live with the learning curve. I am impressed with Myles taking a stance with his defense. No worries for me.
8 Rebs in limited PT was great

Berg is slow, I’ve been saying that since watching him in mop up time last year. He’s fine against slower/lower level competition, against good/quick team he’s a no go, maybe 5 minutes a game. I think Purdue’s best team will be a small one with TKR playing the 5.
yea, after watching those videos of him shooting on a practice court, I was expecting a 6 pt/ 5 rb ave this yr from him, guess not so far

Agree with most of the comments but think it would have been a much different game if we attacked the press to score.
Marquette's strategy was to force Purdue to use clock prior to reaching half court. This resulted in them playing aggressive half court D for a shorter period of time. We could have had numerous 3 on 2 opportunities by breaking the press with longer passes instead of relying on Braden to essentially bring the ball up himself.
Agree. This put Braden and/or our offense in a tough position. We had some late clock shots and that isn't our norm.

Yeah I agree. Why don’t we attack the press more? Braden pulls it back or then barely crosses half court and does his back to the basket move (which he got into trouble vs nc state) and then slows it down. We have Heide and Colvin who we can lob to or that are just running down the court.

Imma trust Paint, but I think we need to have Colvin and Heide attack (as others have said) and also attack the press.

I’m not sure if they both are scared if they do attack and they mess up, they’ll be pulled/mins reduced, but we don’t have the safety valve of the NPOTYx2 down there anymore so we have to change something up. TKR is really good but if he gets doubled, we need production from elsewhere.

Yep, and it's frustrating that 2 of our most athletic perimeter players ( Colvin / Heide ) aren't capable of taking a game over for us in that spot. I can understand Cox and Harris struggling, but Colvin is a headscratcher to me. Is he basically just a 3 point shooter who can throw down electrifying dunks when he has an open path to the rim?
You summed that up !!!!!!!!!!!

Yea they looked bad and still have plenty fixed to not get embarrassed next week at Battle 4 Atlantis. "Refs" lol.
8 fouls to 2 with 13 min to go. Hall of calls bailed out IU.

But as a fan, there’s not much difference to this team than Woodsons past ones. Guys can’t shoot, not a lot of 3s taken (or made), give up too many 3s to other team, can’t rebound. If IU runs into a team that can actually shoot the ball, they’re in trouble. But please continue to tell us how we should be be “shredding” our team, who is the second youngest in the big ten, who just lost on the road to what will be a top 10 team. The game was close until about 11 min left when Marquette went on a run and closed it out.

IU on the other hand is tied 40-40 with 12 min to go to …UNC Greensboro who is the 4th team in a row that is not on the same level skill wise or height wise and shooting poorly from 3. Lol

Now now.. you're asking that hamperhead to be a realist which is not something any indinia fan ever will be.

Did you really come here at 2 am and post this? Good Lord the obsession is real.
I can't lie.....thought the same. He has to be young and drunk. Man, what a sad life this kid must have.

Not to worried about last night. I am sure we will see that again on occasion to a degree. But their ability to disrupt through anticipation was remarkable.

Still clear to me that in most instances TKR @ the 5 with 4 guards (includes Heide or Colvin @ the 4) will be the best bet in a lot of situations.

Slow yes, but still got to keep utilizing Berg (& even Burgess) in limited minutes to work them into game shape as there are situations where that might be needed later.

Not sure what to make of Furst? CMP keeps giving him PT. Hopefully, that works sometime soon???
Try watching with your eyes open.

Not sure why you are choosing to be an A$$ this AM? No need for that.

Perhaps you like Furst play. That's great.

Certainly CMP agrees with you that he is capable in the situation he now has. I just think a 6-10" Mr. Basketball should get up and dunk it....where his shot doesn't get blocked as it has.

It’s really difficult to tell how good or bad IU really is with how bad their schedule is. That team they played last night was horrible and IU still struggled to finish them off. Could be a tough year for them and their mercenaries.

It's okay, they're a "football school" now.. well .. or so I've been told. Until that flops .. then their a soccer school..

Then again, the term "football" can technically apply to two sports I guess.

If I were a basketball season ticket holder I would be pissed to have so many games against sisters of the poor type scrubs. I could never imagine Paint trying to push that down the throats of the fans.

I also noticed they shot about 29% from 3. Woof

Different season, same thing happening with a woodson team.

Not obsess over what we're saying here maybe?
He's back peddling on being here. This kid has to be a student that gets drunk, wears candy stripes on his pajamas, but loves Purdue sports 😂

Obsess? Lol. I can get a lot done replying to her, btownbanners, X, Facebook, scrolling, watching highlights and eating a snack all within an hour before going back to sleep myself.

With as much time as you spend here and it being the first thing you think of in the middle of the night, most clearly obsessed.

You know how many times I think about going to a rival's site when I was woken up in the middle of the night by one of my kids? Zero.

Your obsession is real.

The key to this game is to be able to learn from it. We all knew before the game that this would be a tough game to win and a tough team to beat on their home court.

The key now is what lessons did Purdue learn from this loss and will they be able to fix them?

Last year at this time, the question being asked was how can you defeat Purdue with Edey in the middle? Several teams came close. By sagging on Edey and daring Purdue to shoot more threes to win. And Purdue responded by taking and making more 3 point shots.

I guarantee teams were watching both Purdue and Marquette tonight and will copy what they saw as being effective. If Loyer has issues against big physical guards, we will see more of them. If berg is slow and burgess keeps running out of gas, teams will continue to run and play an up tempo game.

I guarantee, unless we learn, the things you complained about will reoccur! Last year, we won a lot of our preseason games, but some were close. As a team, we learned and improved. That will be the key to our success this year! Learn and improve!

I give props to Marquette. They are a good team and deserved to win. I’m hoping for a rematch in April to show them how much we learned.
most teams will NOT have the personnel to copy as effective. No secrets under the sun and other coaches can see, but can they replicate?

I'm not nervous at all. Way too early in the season to be anyway.. especially considering we are not going to learn how to play without Zach overnight.

The truth is likely somewhere between beating Bama and the loss and I also would add that the Bama game may have taken some gas out of the team as I have little doubt they left it all on the court against Bama considering it was at home, they were #2 and it was a battle.

We're a relatively young team as well so will take our lumps this year to make us a contender possibly next year and I am more than okay with that (not that it matters). There is a truckload of talent on this team that is just a handful of games in to a young season where they are all trying to learn their identity.

Also some perspective.. this is basically a "rebuilding" year for us and we are still a top 20 team. And it was done all without having to go out and buy a team and hope it works. This team is very capable and by March I have little doubt they will put it all together at just the right time.
Trying to remember the game, but a few random thoughts-

Jacobsen is not needed every game, but his help D in the lane would have been helpful in this game

Braden lost his poise. Regained some second half, but they really keyed on him with a big that could move on a hard hedge and a big athletic guard (Ross) on him all the time.

Seemed to key on the Big Three and not a lot of offense outside of those three

Gicarri’s first impression of not being a perimeter shooter seems true so far.

Thought Caleb although he was slow to try to dunk twice has been playing better this year.

Last two games it appears Cam is starting to find the basket on the perimeter.

Myles hitting the board, but passing up a couple of shots.

Myles/Cam need to be able to get in the lane and most likely would require two dribbles. Both should be able to elevate with a short jumper when opposing teams are applying a lot of pressure.

Purdue wings rarely back cut when feeling pressure. Purdue does backscreen sometimes but only for the 5 and one time for Myles.

Purdue-do NOT pass it when a defender is in the passing lane…and why is the defender in the passing lane…did you not v-step and seal your man before breaking out…or were you too early in your break?

Marquette pressure was good. They were quick and I couldn’t see enough to see if they got by with some physical play in the crowds. Purdue reminded me of a few years ago when it was only a post feed or 3 pt shot…very little in-between to reduce pressure.

Marquette and others will want a hard hedge if able. This forces Braden up higher creating more space in the handoffs and allowing the D to stay with Braden or get a hand in there.

Every team has degrees of difficulty when the opposition applies pressure whether in zone or man pressure variants. Whatever susceptibility to pressure exists inside a team, that team is typically more formidable IMO early in the season, when so many things are being covered and compounded further with new players and youth.

They smother the ball as well or better than Marquette. Hopefully we attack it differently.
Is their 5 man a quick defender. IMO the Marquette defender could hard hedge HARD and still cover Braden for a bit longer which started some problems. A more agile, quicker 5 that was a threat to score with a quick slip and/or create his space rolling as the 5 defender is in that hard hedge ...might back that pressure off a bit. If Auburn has that, it will be interesting to see how Purdue does.

I do think Purdue missing some open looks didn't help the nerves. Purdue handled the pressure about as well as they did in Gloomington a couple of years ago

Agree. This put Braden and/or our offense in a tough position. We had some late clock shots and that isn't our norm.
If the opposition is to eat clock in a zone press rather than to try to create turnovers, does rushing down the court feed into what the opposition wants since they are backing down and just looking for Purdue to make a mistake, but otherwise not trap? They were stunting and faking the double and playing the pass or waiting for someone to dribble into a trap it seemed at times. Last year when Purdue struggled with the clock as a result of being on their heels a bit...Zach was always an outlet when everything fell apart. I like this team, but it is different than last year and needs some attacking the basket in the half court. Now if you can score against the press...then yes this team should do that.

Flip a coin on who wins the B1G this year. Nebraska beating Creighton at Creighton. Probably the deepest conference in the nation.

Ehh... SEC might be deeper. Definitely better at the top overall with Alabama, Kentucky, Auburn, Florida and Texas A&M.

Didn't watch game, but Kalkbrenner got 1 FG attempt and Creighton shot almost 50 3s at bad percentage.

Sounds like Fred packed hs D in paint and luckily they were not hitting 3s.

Good win for B1G.

Sleepers had comment that this is looking like a year everyone slams Wisconsin all offseason, and then Greg Gaurd will sneak in and win the league at 15-5 or 14-6, lol.

As I said elsewhere, during my limited viewing, the use of Kalk in the high PnR was non existent. Perhaps they tried that, but when I watched it was just hoisting 3s. Crn coaching didn't look good during my watch.

LOL, you take it personally eh? I said it because he did a number of things well against Marquette. You must have been pee'ing or something. Or playign with your ass.

You don't grasp iu fans mentality. WIN baby, doesn't matter who against. If you can't beat the big boys, win against the sisters of the poor ALL THE TIME.
