Gold-plated helmets ...

Gray jerseys look sweet with black helmets. Arguably within the color scheme, since the neutral gray is a variant of black - no different than white not violating the color scheme. Agree gold and gray was a bad choice, only because it didn't look awesome.

What would you all think if a gold jersey with black numbers/white trim, black pants, and black helmets?

I'm all for trying new color schemes and have wondered about this one, so I'm all for it! This is the type of thing that can catch some of the recruits' attention. It shows we aren't just a bunch of boring old people!

It doesn't seem to hurt Penn State with their recruiting.

Comparing the powerhouses and their traditional uniforms, Bama, PSU, Michigan, etc. is not relevant to Purdue.

Ohio St changes up their uniforms too. Until purdue sustains long term success they need to be as “cool” as possible. Obviously winning trumps all

Right, let's wear colors that don't complement each other, or match, just to "prove" we aren't boring "old people" ... because all old people are boring, of course, especially when they insist on maintaining traditions ... because traditions are only for old people.

Players love the Jersey and the gold actually match the trim on numbers up close I really like the uniforms I think the goal is not to wear the same uniforms combination as little as possible

I don't hate the "anthracite" jerseys, but they're not my favorite and agree that they should be matched with the black helmets. I didn't mind when they wore the gray pants on the road at Iowa last year either. At least Purdue has a gray tie-in, as anthracite is a kind of coal, and coal fires a boiler, they can sort of pull it off because gold and black. When teams like Illinois, Tennessee, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Kentucky, etc. wear gray it does not look good at all.

I'm not against trying new color schemes -- and I like the gray jerseys, but the gold-plated helmet doesn't complement the gray jersey, at least not from a distance of more than a few yards, or on TV, which I think is the main goal.

... and you sound like an insecure old person or an ignorant young person.
I say I like trying new uniforms, you attack that idea unprovoked, and I’m insecure. Go yell at some clouds. I won’t be responding any further btw. There’s no point in furthering this conversation.

You and your idea were not "attacked," and I had already said that I like the gold-plated helmets and gray jerseys, just not together. So my comment wasn't against "the idea of trying new uniforms."

This is what you stated, "I'm all for trying new color schemes and have wondered about this one, so I'm all for it! This is the type of thing that can catch some of the recruits' attention. It shows we aren't just a bunch of boring old people!"

What I commented on was your apparent need to signal you're not old, or don't "think old," by arguing for something unconventional, not because it's an actual improvement over anything, but for the pure sake of being unconventional.

Gloomy gray skies. Sad gray days. Gray hair falling out. Losing gray matter. Tired pencil drawings. Way wrong side of the Civil War. Gray uniforms.

Maybe the team thinks wearing the best helmets with the worst uniforms balances out to average-looking. Extraordinarily plain. Maybe their thinking is the gray uniforms look so bad that anything they do in them looks good. Or maybe they think opponents just won’t want to touch those old nasty dirty things.

Maybe they like going with the 1950s rural track team look, minus the tie strings. Or the 1960s Sears generic football pajamas look, minus the footies. Trouble is, these look less like throwbacks and more like throwaways. With fake soot all over. Real boilermakers would pitch ’em into the fire.

You can just see a Purdue kid opening the big Christmas present, grabbing out the contents, holding up a mini uniform, pausing, turning to his parents and trying not to frown while his face shows his thoughts: “Oh, the gray one … Maybe the black and gold was sold out … Maybe this was on clearance … Maybe this is what they think of me … Gray coal in my stocking … I’m depressed … Back to bed.”

Save the children. Slay the gray.

We’re on the same team here. Let’s call it at that and agree that grey with the gold helmets is not a good look.

No. Just no.
I did like these uniforms from a few years ago. Combine them with the black or chrome gold helmet and I think there is a winner there. Also, Nike has a 'metallic gold' that is much closer to Old Gold without being horrific in color in their palette. Maybe it'll get used now that Purdue is actually relevant again.

I didn't like those in the Orton pic because on bright sunny days it was hard to read the jersey numbers correctly. The gold and the white blended too much.
Agreed. That was an awful look. It’s exactly why fans demanded “Back in Black” for the next season.

I honestly kind of liked the all-gold C-3PO look over the gold jerseys with white pants. The best part of that era uniform in my opinion was the two tone NFL style socks.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. I personally think that was Purdue’s worst combo in years. FUGLY. Hated the white pants. Not to mention we had a mediocre year wearing those.

I think we agree more than we disagree. I was not a big fan of those uniforms, but if forced to choose I would take all gold over gold/white every time.

Sometimes I wonder what the game impact of certain color choices is. For example:

Does a uniform not strikingly differentiated from the other team make it harder to find an open receiver? (Or make it slightly harder to identify who to tackle?)

Does black "pop" a silhouette better, or is a bright color easier to see?

Do these effects change for a night game with intense lights vs an overcast day?

Is visual differentiation more of an advantage to the O or D?

For those of you who have played, are any of these real considerations?

As someone who has spent a lot of time both fishing and designing web sites, a lot of thought is spent in both fields on color theory. When designing a website for a company with gaudy color branding, prevailing wisdom suggests using the key colors sparingly as accents against neutral backgrounds for a more pleasing look. When fishing, overcast days mean white and fluorescent colors are more visible, but on sunny days flash gets the job done. That is, unless fishing clear water for easily-spooked fish, when you need the exact opposite effect for stealth.

Countless books have been published on both these topics, but I wonder if color theory is ever used as a strategy in uni selection for a given opponent?

As long as they don't dye the field black or gold, I'm down for whatever uniforms they want to wear.
