Forde piece on epic choke job

Did you not watch the Duke and Gonzaga team. Both have top level talent and both will possibly be playing next week. Purdue manhandled both teams. We have athletes.
Coach Painter, please go into your office and write your resignation letter.

(We might have athletes, if you’re comparing them to Indiana high school players. We don’t have athletes to compete in March)

Those teams were not playing defense in November. And they both missed tons of shots. We didn’t “out-athlete” them.

Still waiting for you to tell me which of our players were quicker than the guy they were guarding last night.

You don’t beat teams by 18 and 19 points because they missed shots. At the very least purdues athletes are just as good as those teams. Still waiting for the reason that Purdue destroyed those teams and lost to a crappy mid major.

It’s not an athletic issue. It’s a coaching issue. I don’t think painter should quit just because you’re rolling the dice with a new hire and we could very well be way worse. There’s good recruits coming in and most of these players are coming back. They’ll be right there next year. However they still might lose to a crappy team again.

Serious question: have you watched any other games beside Purdue games? Did you watch TCU-Arizona State last night ?

You don’t understand basketball do you?
If Duke and Purdue played last night, Duke would have been favored.

Serious question. Did you not watch Purdue for the first half of the season? They literally manhandled almost everybody they played. Including top teams. How can you say it’s an athletic issue? The problem is adjusting to a different style of play which falls on the coach.

Manhandling is a perfect word. Nothing to do with athleticism.

They have zero players who can consistently get their own shot. They are athletically inferior to almost every team they play, including FDU.

Superior athleticism doesn’t always win you games. Do you remember Jacob Lawson? The dude could jump out of the gym but he was lacking skills. Purdues athleticism is just fine. You don’t dominate the season like they did and have a lack of athleticism. It was a worn down team that couldn’t adjust to a different style of play.

To finish my analogy, there were a ton of frustrated Nebraska football fans in the late 80s and early 90s. Osborne “couldn’t win the big one.”

Then he went and recruited some better athletes on both sides of the ball and won 3 natties.
I agree with that analogy, Purdue has nice role players, they need a few dogs! I’m sorry, a starting lineup of Gillis, Newman, Loyer, Smith isn’t a final 4 contender, granted, shouldn’t had lost yesterday.

Here is my outsiders comment. I will not disagree that the 1st round loss was terrible. However, as a Michigan fan the team I feared the most over the decades is Purdue. How the heck is Purdue beating my team with that slug Jim Rowinski? Painter has continued the Keady tradition of playing way above their talent. Purdue keeps winning in the Big10. You scratch your head when you do player to player comparisons and say, "How did Purdue win?!!!" The flip side of this is when you get to the NCAA tournament which is more about talent, the one and done is detrimental to Purdue. A lazy talented team that decides to pay attention for a few weeks has the advantage over a team of overachievers.

I have nothing but the highest respect for your coach who won a Big10 championship with not one but two undersized freshmen guards and team that really was not good at hitting the 3-pt shot. Edey generated the best open looks. Yet the team can't even shoot 33% from deep? Compound that freshmen points stink not just at scoring but running the offense. I personally am confounded that this team did what it did.

I have nothing but the highest respect for Matt Painter. He coaches as he played, way above his pay grade.
A good outsider view.

Couldn’t adjust to better athletes….

We need skilled basketball players who are also high end athletes.
Usually those are 5 star athletes. Sometimes 4 star. Furst Morton and Kaufman renn along with Loyer were 4 star according to 247. I believe the kid coming in this year is athletic and the kid coming in the year after is athletic too. So we’ll see what happens.

Loyer and TKR are mediocre athletically. Not explosive athletes. But yes, Colvin is.

I hope Gillis and Morton return next year, hope they’re the 7th/8th men in the rotation, Newman is a great guy, probably best for him to play his last year at a smaller level school where he can have fun and play 30 minutes a night, maybe an Indiana State/Valpo/Loyola type of school. I hope all others return along with a portal transfer that adds athleticism and can shoot it a bit. I hope Edey returns but if he doesn’t I think Furst/Renn can handle that spot, if Edey does return I want Renn to get the bulk of the PF minutes, let Furst back up both, that will give him plenty of minutes.
You want morton over newman. Ffs

lol. The NYT article from today highlighted that we are using a sport psychologist. Maybe fire him first.

It's the head coach though, he need to change and he won't/can't
Purdue has used a sports psychologist for years. After the downward spiral of this tem's demeanor over the 2nd half of the season, I would be checking the psychologist's diploma to see if he/she was an IU grad.

This has absolutely nothing to do with athleticism. It has to do with coaching philosophy. Our athletes are good enough, it’s the coaches not putting them in situations where we can thrive. The inability to admit you need change is what is depressing, we need to adjust to the landscape of basketball. Zone and presses are something that would make other teams have to adjust to, not just our pathetic man to man with slow guards

How about guys make WIDE open shots! Also how about veteran leadership? Where are their voices on the court and in the locker room? Over my dead body I would lose this game and they displaced no heart!

The portal will be interesting this offseason, need to get an athletic wing and lead guard! All of this with Edey status up on the air

Are you watching Duke/Tennessee? Still think our team athleticism is where it needs to be?

All those teams are better than Purdue now. Duke was laughing at Purdue as the No1 in their region.
Purdue was definitely an overrated #1 seed and most knew that. If, Duke gets beat by a Tennessee without their best player this won't age well...if!

Duke has NBA players all over the court. They weren't well coached early on and now have developed to their potential. TO's might hurt this Duke team tough as it comes with young teams.
