Eden Ewing Kicked Off The Team

It's kind of pointless to speculate and it does no one any good. We don't even know if this is a first offense. Eden didn't play in several games, who's to say he didn't already receive some discipline? Painter won't make it public unless it is already a public event (like Cline). Remember Hammons a few years ago when Purdue opened the season with him on the bench for a few games. Nothing was ever made public.

I'm saddened more than most because I was one of his biggest fans when he was recruited. he wasn't just a good juco player. he was one of the top 3 juco forwards. the kid had talent. and you don't get kicked off a team in midseason just for non-performance.

Does anyone know why Smotherman was kicked off the team? it appears painter is saying the exact same things - a violation of team rules and I wish him well. painter never made it public why he kicked Smotherman off the team, and I highly doubt he'll say anything about Ewing.

I'm sad, but not upset. I don't think this was a whiff. Ewing was a plan d or plan e after Painter whiffed on several other power forwards he was trying to recruit.

Something that hasn't been said. maybe Wheeler will end his redshirt and start playing. or maybe, somehow Dow will get his academics issues straightened out and arrive early like haarms did.

There are certain non-disclosure rules/laws that apply to some situations. Student confidentiality is a big deal. I've signed several to do various tasks within the Athletic Department.

My son is a NCAA Division 1 athlete. I'm familiar with the non-disclosure rules, and also discipline actions that are never disclosed. Sitting out a game or track meet is a very common discipline action among coaches for both drugs and academic issues.

A player doesn't just get kicked off a team for non-performance. And very seldom does a player get kicked off the team for having a bad attitude. Bad attitudes usually end up in transferring. and experience has shown police records for assault or drugs are often times released publically several months after the fact - like Cline's incident.

the problem is most of us here know too much about the NCAA rules, which leads us to speculate.

Smotherman was drugs.

A question for everyone regarding a student athlete being kicked off the team. How is this different than being indefinitely suspended?

If you are going to make room for a scholarship, you do it in the off season because you never know what might happen in season. Again, not going to speculate because it could literally be anything from academic dishonesty, failed drug test, to just being habitually late/causing tension in the locker room. Hell, this could be a decision the captains went to CMP about and said they believe the program is better without Ewing in it and gave reasons.
The only thing we do know is that it is important enough to Matt that he got booted for it without a publicly known second chance being given.

I have heard that in the past that an indefinitely suspended player got reinstated after his goals of improvement were achieved.

Bryson Scott - couldn’t keep his attitude under control.
I have some insight on the Scott situation I learned about this week:

In a practice, CMP was having the team doing an offensive drill where he wanted a certain amount of passes to be completed before taking any shot at all in a scrimmage type setting. After just ripping the team a few minutes before, Bryson came down and jacked a shot up with zero or 1 pass...CMP threw him out of the gym and Bryson walked from the program. I think this is where Bryson's comments about being immature and not seeing the specific lessons in how CMP speaks and runs the program come from.

an example - the three UCLA players received indefinite suspensions. Duke indefinitely suspended basketball player Allen for tripping players. Allen returned after 2-3 games. The UCLA players - except Ball may eventually return. The guess was their suspension would last through the non-conference schedule.

to be kicked off, he's not coming back. period.

I just wish the young kid well. Horrible to get booted, and horrible to give the boot..........and right before Christmas. I don't know the kid or his situation, and I won't speculate on what might have been the reason.......it doesn't really matter. Good luck Eden.

Why would we burn Wheeler’s shirt because we let a guy go who wasn’t playing anyway?

My old roommate at Purdue was kicked out of school in a similar abrupt manner.
He was caught cheating on a final exam the week before Christmas. There is no mediation ,academic review or coaches 2nd chance when that occurs...

Bingo, I don't get the infatuation with knowing exact reasons. It is what it is.

Kind of a bummer for next year, as I think he could have produced some at the 4 spot, but this year he looked like a lost cause. Not sure if it was his late arrival, not being mentally sharp enough to grasp high-level D1 schemes, or a lack of tangible basketball skills that was covered up at JUCO by being 6'9 and a good athlete. Probably a combination of all mentioned.

Now for next year, barring a 5th year transfer or a hardship transfer, our 4 and 5 positions will consist of a sophomore and three freshmen. Could be interesting.

I was under the impression that CMP had a 'one strike' policy. Past players have been allowed one mistake before being dismissed from the team by CMP. Unless his one strike was already exhausted and wasn't publicly disclosed, this team rule violation must have been severe or grades related to result in the instant dismissal from the team.

My 2 cents.
I thought the same thing. It's likely it was a second offense.

Right. I don’t consider being academically eligible a “team rule”.
This. Unless he got poor grades for skipping too many classes. Attendance is a team rule. It seems that more classes at Purdue are docking grades for poor attendance than when I was there.

Had been watching past couple years' games lately, for example, against Iowa, Minn, and IU..

Freshman/Sophomore years for current seniors were bundled with mistakes galore, tentative offense and lot of perimeter passing..

It would be nice if we have three consistent scoring threats (at least one in the middle) in the team. Those would be Carson, Cline, Sasha, and Matt?
Aaron and Trevon can be just icing on the cake.

Boiler Up!!

We could get Taylor back.

I did forget about JT. He could be valuable to spell Haarms while the freshmen (whichever one doesn't RS) learn and adjust.
Yeah I hope JT can stay healthy but I don't know. I am worried Haarms is going to tick off some badass, "no care" opponent and get his legs taken out and hurt. His laugh and celebration after the dunk was classic but if I was an opponent fan.....hmm

Purdue's oversight of the in-semester academic progress of all its varsity athletes works like this: Twice a semester (about one-third through and two-thirds through) the instructor of each of the student's classes receives an email from the office charged with academic oversight (not the coaching staff of the student's sport). The instructor is asked to answer the following questions: (1) what is the student's current grade in the class (assessed as a percentage), (2) how many times has the student been absent, and (3) is the student in danger of failing the class? There is also an opportunity for open-ended comments by the instructor. These reports are confidential and FERPA compliant.

While this is true as an overall system, there is far, far more micromanagement with football, MBB, WBB and perhaps some others. There are student athletes who have every class assignment and grade checked. Meaning every assignment is checked for the grade and it is entered into their student athlete grade area. There are weekly grade meetings with all student athletes who are struggling and often grade check forms are required from one or more of their instructors. The academic staff looks at the student athletes online grades usually weekly. One major problem is instructors not grading assignments for weeks. Then grading a bunch all at once. Boom - wake-up call.

As an instructor, I filled out a lot of those forms. For some athletes, it made a difference, but for some they didn't care as my class was an elective for most. On the average, the baseball players were the most attentive and smartest. the female basketball players were the worst.

well, I could make a prioritized list, but won't LOL. Golf and Tennis tend to be high, I have to wonder if where you taught had a football team, since they were not listed near the end of your post....

And since this is a bball board ... our bballers have been very, very, very strong.

I think that sophomore will be damn good!
The freshman will make freshman mistakes and that will be our weakness when we sub for the 5.
Nojel/Carsen
Carsen/Hunter
Cline/Stefanovic
Wheeler/Taylor/Williams
Haarms/Dowona/Williams

Only one of three colleges I taught at had a football team! I taught Microsoft office and web design and also tutored students with documented learning disabilities! A lot of the students I tutored were actually smart but had test anxiety and/or were slow readers! As part of their classroom requirements, they were allowed to take their tests outside the classroom or were allowed additional time. My men's basketball players were an upside down bell curve! They were either really smart or really not motivated to learn.

My son teaches MS OFFICE .... and some data mining stuff. and my wife worked with athletes at PU with IEPs. .... doesn't do it any longer. PU has students who work for the athletic department who go to athletes' classes and take notes (the athlete is there too). I'm not against helping a student do well, but at times I wonder what someone who can't take notes will do with a college degree.

The way football players are treated in southern High Schools ..... well ... redefining UNPREPARED for college if that college demands academics.

For all those wondering about team rules - I recommend listening to the latest BoilerBall podcast. It is one of the best episodes and talks about the Wooden Institute for student athletes. Pretty interesting about the bonds among athletes on campus and how they all pull for each other and are friends.

One of the things that came up was the seniors are the ones who set the team rules. Painter holds the final say on which on them but Elliot Bloom said Painter rarely vetos any of them.

So I guess I didn’t answer what rule was broken but some pretty cool insight into the team and how we are building our athletes into leaders.

In the Learning Disability Center I worked at Auburn, Univ, I met but didn't tutor two football players. One was RB Brent Fullwood and the other was RB BO Jackson. Fullwood matches your description to a T. he was not the brightest person in the world, but he was an All American RB. According to my colleagues, there was no way he should have been eligible after his first semester. On the other hand, Bo Jackson was sharp as a pin and his mom was a teacher. My experiences there lead me to speculate Cam Newton probably didn't care much about his grades as he was only really at Auburn for one semester before working out for the NFL combines.

On the other hand, I was classmates with Walter Jordan, Parker and Walls at Purdue and was in several classes with them. they never came to class, I saw them the first day and at the final. but I guess they did ok.
