There are certain non-disclosure rules/laws that apply to some situations. Student confidentiality is a big deal. I've signed several to do various tasks within the Athletic Department.I'm saddened more than most because I was one of his biggest fans when he was recruited. he wasn't just a good juco player. he was one of the top 3 juco forwards. the kid had talent. and you don't get kicked off a team in midseason just for non-performance.
Does anyone know why Smotherman was kicked off the team? it appears painter is saying the exact same things - a violation of team rules and I wish him well. painter never made it public why he kicked Smotherman off the team, and I highly doubt he'll say anything about Ewing.
I'm sad, but not upset. I don't think this was a whiff. Ewing was a plan d or plan e after Painter whiffed on several other power forwards he was trying to recruit.
Something that hasn't been said. maybe Wheeler will end his redshirt and start playing. or maybe, somehow Dow will get his academics issues straightened out and arrive early like haarms did.

The only thing we do know is that it is important enough to Matt that he got booted for it without a publicly known second chance being given. If you are going to make room for a scholarship, you do it in the off season because you never know what might happen in season. Again, not going to speculate because it could literally be anything from academic dishonesty, failed drug test, to just being habitually late/causing tension in the locker room. Hell, this could be a decision the captains went to CMP about and said they believe the program is better without Ewing in it and gave reasons.
it's finite ... does not have a possible future changeA question for everyone regarding a student athlete being kicked off the team. How is this different than being indefinitely suspended?
I have some insight on the Scott situation I learned about this week:Bryson Scott - couldn’t keep his attitude under control.
I have heard that in the past that an indefinitely suspended player got reinstated after his goals of improvement were achieved.
Why would we burn Wheeler’s shirt because we let a guy go who wasn’t playing anyway?I'm saddened more than most because I was one of his biggest fans when he was recruited. he wasn't just a good juco player. he was one of the top 3 juco forwards. the kid had talent. and you don't get kicked off a team in midseason just for non-performance.

I just wish the young kid well. Horrible to get booted, and horrible to give the boot..........and right before Christmas. I don't know the kid or his situation, and I won't speculate on what might have been the reason.......it doesn't really matter. Good luck Eden.
I thought the same thing. It's likely it was a second offense.I was under the impression that CMP had a 'one strike' policy. Past players have been allowed one mistake before being dismissed from the team by CMP. Unless his one strike was already exhausted and wasn't publicly disclosed, this team rule violation must have been severe or grades related to result in the instant dismissal from the team.
My 2 cents.
This. Unless he got poor grades for skipping too many classes. Attendance is a team rule. It seems that more classes at Purdue are docking grades for poor attendance than when I was there.Right. I don’t consider being academically eligible a “team rule”.
We could get Taylor back.Kind of a bummer for next year, as I think he could have produced some at the 4 spot, but this year he looked like a lost cause. Not sure if it was his late arrival, not being mentally sharp enough to grasp high-level D1 schemes, or a lack of tangible basketball skills that was covered up at JUCO by being 6'9 and a good athlete. Probably a combination of all mentioned.
Now for next year, barring a 5th year transfer or a hardship transfer, our 4 and 5 positions will consist of a sophomore and three freshmen. Could be interesting.

Yeah I hope JT can stay healthy but I don't know. I am worried Haarms is going to tick off some badass, "no care" opponent and get his legs taken out and hurt. His laugh and celebration after the dunk was classic but if I was an opponent fan.....hmmI did forget about JT. He could be valuable to spell Haarms while the freshmen (whichever one doesn't RS) learn and adjust.
While this is true as an overall system, there is far, far more micromanagement with football, MBB, WBB and perhaps some others. There are student athletes who have every class assignment and grade checked. Meaning every assignment is checked for the grade and it is entered into their student athlete grade area. There are weekly grade meetings with all student athletes who are struggling and often grade check forms are required from one or more of their instructors. The academic staff looks at the student athletes online grades usually weekly. One major problem is instructors not grading assignments for weeks. Then grading a bunch all at once. Boom - wake-up call.Purdue's oversight of the in-semester academic progress of all its varsity athletes works like this: Twice a semester (about one-third through and two-thirds through) the instructor of each of the student's classes receives an email from the office charged with academic oversight (not the coaching staff of the student's sport). The instructor is asked to answer the following questions: (1) what is the student's current grade in the class (assessed as a percentage), (2) how many times has the student been absent, and (3) is the student in danger of failing the class? There is also an opportunity for open-ended comments by the instructor. These reports are confidential and FERPA compliant.
well, I could make a prioritized list, but won't LOL. Golf and Tennis tend to be high, I have to wonder if where you taught had a football team, since they were not listed near the end of your post....As an instructor, I filled out a lot of those forms. For some athletes, it made a difference, but for some they didn't care as my class was an elective for most. On the average, the baseball players were the most attentive and smartest. the female basketball players were the worst.

And since this is a bball board ... our bballers have been very, very, very strong.
My son teaches MS OFFICE .... and some data mining stuff. and my wife worked with athletes at PU with IEPs. .... doesn't do it any longer. PU has students who work for the athletic department who go to athletes' classes and take notes (the athlete is there too). I'm not against helping a student do well, but at times I wonder what someone who can't take notes will do with a college degree.Only one of three colleges I taught at had a football team! I taught Microsoft office and web design and also tutored students with documented learning disabilities! A lot of the students I tutored were actually smart but had test anxiety and/or were slow readers! As part of their classroom requirements, they were allowed to take their tests outside the classroom or were allowed additional time. My men's basketball players were an upside down bell curve! They were either really smart or really not motivated to learn.

The way football players are treated in southern High Schools ..... well ... redefining UNPREPARED for college if that college demands academics.
