Eastern

Definitely an intimidating force and I really do think he's improved his shot-altering. Hey, and as your videos show, he's had a few nice blocks himself.I think as as the season has gone on, they have both gotten better at positioning themselves against guys driving into the lane to force a difficultshot

I hope you read my post. I am agreeing with you, but stresssing his defensive positioning being more important than just blocking shots. I appreciate the videos, as I was saying Haas' blocks should be promoted to other teams.

One question that no one has answered that I made last week was when Bridges of MSU went to throw down a thunderous dunk he missed. Did anyone see it? Did Haas get a piece of it? If Haas did, that should be highlighted. Even though it was not a highlight block, other teams in the NCAA playoffs should watch it. They need to have it in the back of their minds when taking the ball inside.

I have a bunch of Wheeler fans who follow me on twitter all point to his shooting as a strong point . All the games I have seen he knocks them down . Kid is under rated IMO .
Agree, he's definitely under rated. I understand why Painter wants to lock him as soon as possible. Compare to shooting, I prefer his speed. He dunks like Bridges which is very important for our team right now since we're lack of athleticism.

TB,

At approximately 28:42.....hard to tell, but Flemming mentions it may have been deflected.

I would guess that very few people on this board have seen enough of these players to decide whether or not they are good shooters. Other than Eastern, most of us had never even heard of any of these players before they committed.

Those videos are all fine and dandy, but Haas averages 1.6 blocks per 40 minutes.

Those are not the stats of a shot blocker.

For comparison, Hammons averaged 5 blocks per 40 mins his Soph year, 4.6 his Junior Year, and 4.1 his Senior year.

Haas definitely has been better in terms of altering shots and help defense, but he's no shot blocker.
The fact that he doesn't block a lot of shots isn't all bad. By staying in position he's able to block out the opposing center, which contributes to Purdue's great defensive rebounding percentage, which at 78.1% is the eleventh best percentage out of 351 teams.

I thought so but the announcers seemed to miss that

Great point.

Wheeler has already signed his LOI to Purdue

Haas isn't such a bad blocker. He is just too massive that people usually don't choose to challenge the guy. Purdue fans had been spoiled too much by Hammons, who was an excellent blocker. He was good at coming out of nowhere and blocking the guy who didn't see him coming. With Haas, it is impossible NOT to see him coming. He is too big.

I wouldn't say Haas is an excellent blocker, but he does his job well. I have not seen anyone dunk on him because no one smaller than 7' even dares to challenge the guy. Time after time I saw an opponent pass the ball at the end when he faced Haas with his hands up. The silhouette of 7'3", 260 lbs guy is too scary to shoot the ball. Considering all, I'd say he is a decent shot "deflector."

Thank you very much. Looking at the replay it definitely looks like it was blocked. Purdue should have highlighted this and let everyone see it. It is great PR. And thank you Dakota Girl.

Where is TX are you? I am in Dallas.

Houston these days. Been in Austin and San Antonio, too; and have some good friends in the Metroplex area.

We have a very balanced team. Probably the best offensive team I have seen in 17 years of following Purdue basketball. The only time we have ever had a starting 5 all capable of taking and making 3's. We also have a nice mix of drivers, and down-low bangers. We play good defence too in spurts and have an all-american candidate. We have to make some noise this year!

You must be pretty young or did you come from another area of the country (or another country altogether) to attend Purdue or just started following the men's hoops program as a teen or something similar?

Everything is based on Taylor if he can stay healthy or not. I agree that he's the natural blocker in our team but he just cannot stay healthy. The team we have right now is lack of athleticism, CMP cannot put Haas, Mathias, Albrecht and PJ on the court at the same time, lineup like this is a huge disaster because they're not athletic enough to speed up. After PSU game I think our defect is pretty obvious, we have smartest players but intelligence is not the only thing important, we also need speed. Based on our next year's roster I think CMP really wants to make some improvement.
From what I see so far, Wheeler is really athletic, and he has some dunk skills similar to Bridges, remember Bridges in high school was a twirling dunker. His speed can be a great help to us. Even though Haarms is listed as F now but based on what I saw in training that they are training him like a 5. The difference between Haas and Haarms is that Haarms is more like AJ, he's skinny and has speed, Haas is too slow and he cannot jump high enough to block, maybe he can be a blocker as well. Maybe he's not good enough to stay inside like Haas but remember Michigan's Wagner, he's 6'11 from Germany, big Europeans don't usually stay inside and they prefer to stay outside and shoot. If Haarms is a great shooter, it doesn't matter if he plays 4 or 5, all depends on Painter's decision. I don't know much about Ewing but he kinda looks like Vince, he can play 3 or 4. The only thing I'm sure about is that he cannot be RSed. About Sasha, he's still raw. If Epperson or some other guys commit, he will be guaranteed RS. He looks like Dakota and if we build him up he can easily get into defense role. And one more thing about him, he can dunk, so let's say that he's more athletic than Dakota. When Mathias first came, he didn't shoot this well but he improved a lot. Sometimes they just need time to improve.

Haarms could be considered a stretch 5 (if that makes sense, like a left-handed Frank Kaminsky protégé). Haarms is skinny but Hammons was not. AJH is built more like how Haas is built, but with more body fat.

I'm imagining a left handed poor man's Porzingis. Haarmzingis!!!

For the folks who can't get enough of recruiting, here is a write-up by OB52.

Of the 2017 recruits I find Wheeler the most interesting and the most exciting. Eastern will be a great player for the Boilers, but I have a feeling with wheeler blowing up late, and Purdue being lucky to land him. wheeler will offer extraordinary missmatches that CMP will exploit against many teams before his career is over. This really is not based on much...just a feeling.

With Wheeler now 6'9" with a three point shot and the athleticism we have seen, Eastern as a 6'5" point, Cline as the "Assassin", and Carsen shooting and driving, all that is needed is a solid post and 2019 will look fantastic. There's more there than I mentioned too.:)

The advent of "Boogie Ball."

Yes! The speed Carsen possesses and the speed and athleticism around him will make for the ability to create tremendous transition pressure on the opposing defense. An added benefit is that the slower players, Cline and Haarms could be devastating trailing spot up three shooters on the secondary break. I think we will see a style evolution over the next two years.

I believe there will be an evolution and I think it is more of better recruiting than a new desire by Matt. Matt took what he could to fit the best team he could...bring back a winning culture. I would love for Matt to bring in the seals every couple of years. Wheeler will need to close out much better and play with more intensity along with more strength and weight...but at 6'9" and a stroke along with some athleticism is a different type of player others have had that Purdue...hasn't. Eastern is not going to get backed into the lane by a guard and shot over as easy either :)
