Eastern

People cannot dismiss DePaul right now. Yes I'm a fan, but the fact is, he went on an official two weeks ago, and then this past weekend did an unofficial on campus, including going to their first game. This past unofficial wasn't needed, especially if his mind was made up.
Between visiting DePaul the last 2 weekends and the purple devil emoji, I predict another 2nd place recruiting finish tomorrow. He probably has a girlfriend who just happened to get a scholarship to DePaul also.

I will gladly get my hopes up, then we will see what happens. This kid alone could put this class where need it to be for next year.

I don't think the purple demon emoji has anything to do with Depaul. If you look at his twitter history, he's been doing that for a while. In fact, he included that emoji when he tweeted that he was visiting Ohio State, and also his visit to Seton Hall.

First, Eastern is not an "athletic guard", so no clue what you're talking about there.

Second, Big East.

Lastly, every game is on TV.

Seriously? He's absolutely an athletic guard. When was your last tournament appearance?

And when was the last time you actually seen Nojel play? He's a 6'6" extremely skilled and crafty guard, but he's not going to kill you on speed, and he's not an above-the-rim player. He's very much a Jalen Rose-like player. If you only watch YouTubes, that can fool you. Been watching Nojel since he was in 8th grade.

Keep thinking that.

Perhaps you define "athletic" differently I guess, as I think most would deem Jalen Rose a very athletic guard as well for that matter.

Regardless, and I was a huge DePaul fan for years, but it is odd that they are suddenly in the mix for a guy that had the option to go just about anywhere he wanted, and far more prominent programs or places that would seemingly be better fits for him now and the future. DePaul is about as far removed from national relevance as any program can be, and they do not even have the excuse of having a football program to blame for taking attention away from it.

If they land him, props to them and a coup for the program...but also a very questionable move on Nojel's part.

I have no idea what happened with MSU and Eastern, but I do know that in the past when MSU has offered non 5 star guys who didn't commit shortly thereafter, MSU did not take it well. Fife was infuriated when a kid in Indianapolis didn't commit to them last year. They pulled his offer because he didn't commit fast enough.
As far as J. Meyer and B. Snow picking Purdue for Eastern, who knows? Those guys are the lowest common denominator of the internet in my book.

In-depth article about Nojel Eastern. If it is an accurate read on the high character of his mom, I predict Purdue will get him. She sounds way too high character to fall for the bagman and snake oil tactics of certain programs that have often beaten Purdue out for recruits in the past.

We will be a borderline top 10 team for the next 2 years, and a Nojel is exactly what is needed to get us over the hump.....not to mention he will be the piece we build around in his upperclassman years.

Depaul is a rebuilding project too far....Northwestern would be a better landing spot than Depaul at the current trajectories of those programs

She drives the Wildkits’ bus to away games, and the players high-five her as they climb on, but at the games Reed tends to sit apart from the team, often on the opposite side of the court from their bench. Between Eastern’s high profile and her experience on the refereeing circuit – she officiates basketball at the high school and college levels, and refereeing is the second-best part of her life after having her son – people know her, and there’s always a steady stream of coaches, friends and parents passing by to chat.

On a snowy February night, she sat on the sideline at Northwestern’s Welsh-Ryan Arena, a cavernous space that dwarfs the high school’s own Beardsley Gym, during Evanston’s practice. Reed’s eyes traveled up and down the court, tracing her son’s movement intently.

When she comes to practice, Eastern bumps fists with her during breaks in running drills, and she’ll occasionally call out instructions to him from the sideline. This time, though, he turned away bashfully when she beckoned him over. He is, after all, a teenager, obliged to occasional embarrassment that his mother exists.

Reed has a heavy hand in Eastern’s recruiting as a liaison between him and college scouts, with a mother’s pitch-perfect B.S. detector for insincere coaches and shady promises they may make about her son’s role on their team. With the gravity of the choice in front of Eastern, she sees no reason to rush it. And as anticipated as it is, any hints about his decision remain as elusive as a pair of limited-edition Jordan sneakers. If he has any idea where he wants to go, he hasn’t said, and neither have recruiters from the schools after him; per NCAA rules, they can’t talk to the press about uncommitted players they’re courting.

I can only guess what Eastern will decide, but as he watched the Villanova game, he had to be able to see how he could help a lot as a freshman on a very good Purdue team.

If that's been the case, for a month or so, wouldn't that information have been leaked to someone, somewhere? All along, up until THIS morning, we've been told that MSU has made Eastern a priority and is consistently pursuing him...

Something strange about this, with MSU involvement, but it raises Purdues chances, so I'll take it. Over-recruiting is happening before players are even signing at MSU... This mistake could hurt Izzo in the long-term on future recruits.. I doubt it, but I can be optimistic about things, right?

Also, who knows about this kid Ikechukwu Obiagu?

A 4* center from Georgia.. Are we still on his short-list? Everything I've seen, seems to point that we are? Seems like a nice target for Painter to strengthen the front court after Biggie or Haas leaves.
In regards to Obiagu, this is from Sept.:

I've long since given up on trying to predict these things. I will say Eastern was the recruit I most wanted after Jackson. A backcourt of Edwards and Eastern would be the best backcourt we've had since Jackson/Moore.

Losing a recruit to the worst program in the Big East would be a tough pill to swallow. Although some folks around here will go so off the deep end you'd think he chose DePauw.

If he wanted to go to a local school with low expectations and zero fan support why isn't Northwestern on his list?

Lot of chatter it is Purdue now that I am reading. Take it for what it's worth though.

Depaul is making a huge push and sell him on being a star of a rebuilding school and stroking his ego a bit. The negatwitts will full on kill themselves if he doesn't come to Purdue but ultimately the choice is up to Eastern.

Just recently Vince Edwards followed him on Twitter and Aaron Wheeler liked the Tweet that he was announcing today. Plus Eastern likes a lot of the Purdue stuff on there. I know it's not always reliable but I noticed similar trend with JJJ, Tillman,Batey, etc. They were really showing no interest in Purdue compared to the school they ultimately chose. This only took a couple minutes to look up on there. So there's optimism but wouldn't rule out him going somewhere else either

I think we'll know more...Oh wait it is tomorrow.

Oh poop..scrap that thought. Plus I hate that line.

Master Eastern, make my day. You won't be sorry. It's been a pissy week so far so this would be a 180 4me.

Go Boilers!

I never feel particularly confident heading into these announcements, regardless of the number of signs pointing to Purdue. Recruiting pretty much comes down to the decision of a high schooler, which I never consider highly predictable.

He's really not an "athletic guard". He's a crafty, do it all kind of guy, with above-average athleticism. His athleticism is very similar to that of Vince Edwards, IMO, only in a 6'5-6'6 frame instead of 6'7-6'8. I wouldn't call VE an athletic forward... He can dunk with ease, but at 6'8 he should be able to. I'd call Carsen Edwards an athletic guard, and guys like OG Ananoby, G-Rob3, Branden Dawson, all athletic since that is where their hype is...

Can Eastern get up and dunk with relative ease? Damn straight he can. He won't blow by people on a consistent basis, and won't dunk every time he attacks the rim. I'd label him as a Michael Carter-Williams type of player, since that's his natural position. He can create his own, he plays solid defense, but his playmaking ability is where he excels.

Athleticism means different things to different people. What I want to know is how is his lateral quickness. If he can stay in front of his man like Kelsey Barlow, that will go a long way in Painter's defense.

Hope we get him but I'll take the same stance as I do with all these announcements. The program will go on whether it be with this recruit or others.

I would define Jalen Rose as smooth. I never thought of him impacting a game with his athleticism. He always seemed to glide and use his size, not speed, to get into a scoring position. I always thought of his shot as slow but he usually had a decent height advantage that allowed him to get his shot off. That's all relative though as he was probably more athletic than 99% of college players while at Michigan.

I also don't have too high of hopes w/ recruiting but I do find him announcing after a great effort by our team vs nova interesting and coincidental.

Today is the last day to sign during the early signing period. I think it was his decision to sign early and he waited until the last day.

Not sure if anyone has looked at this angel yet. I think Painter is in a unique situation from a personal standpoint. If you were a 6'6" guard and wanted to play the point who would most likely trust? A 6'6"-6'7" coach that played the point or a 5'8" coach that cries too much?
