Doyel article on Carl McNulty and Biggie Swanigan

It's Swanigan dream to go to final 4, so we are all going to support him? Don't we? Yes we can!

Doyel has written more great stuff in a single month (pick a month, any month) than Kravitz has written in his entire career. Why'd it take 15 years for the Star to figure out Bob sucked?

I loved the article. First, Carl has aged since my last encounter with him at Meijer eating a hamburger. I was with a friend that did some coaching under basil and just talked a bit. Carl does not know me, but would definitely know two brother in laws...one which borrowed from Carl his most effective set play according to Carl and one every team knew was coming and continued to work. Today where we often see the 5 screening for the 1 on top, Carl reversed that. He had the 1 screening for the 5 down low! Another mismatch opportunity but low instead of high and big instead of little. . Guard would pass to rt wing and cut in a small arc to basket rarely being open for return pass and then cut across the lane to set screen for 5 to receive pass on block. Pass needed timed but was effective for Carl, brother in law and two coaches that followed brother in law.

A little trivia for some. Cass is the same school that had cousins Jon and Ted Kitchel go to Purdue and IU respectively. Jon coaches Cass today and I'm told he is old school which would make me happy. I need to ask my brother in law if his father coached Carl in high school since he coached Jon and Ted's father's.
Charlie, (the snake) Hall was able to slither his way amongst the trees at only 6'3" as a very effective post player for the Wildkats. My very limited association with Carl was that he was a fiery coach on the floor at times and a humble person off.

I read the article and my mind shifts to coaches, connections, principals and Supts of Kokomo, Sharpsville,Taylor,Cass and Delphi and childhood friend that went to Purdue in 1973 before transferring out to Colorado to finish his playing days and now an attorney around Twin Lakes...Pat Manahan...one of the top scorers in Indiana basketball before the three ball. Pat's father Gerald ran a rule defense in the mid 60s which today would be considered a match up zone
Well, I've rambled enough...us old guys with the hour glass winding down have memories if not much future. Really enjoyed the article. Thank you for posting it.

Charlie Hall is at least 6'4". I am 6'3" and have stood next to him many times both as a student and since.
I have been fortunate to have had many of these folks as instructors in basketball. McNulty, Hall, Basil, Callane, and of course my favorite, McCroskey.

Oh Jim Callane played against another brother in law at DePaul. Course he was a guard and brother in la3 a center for Butler. I thought Carl was closer to 6'4"? Kokomo had a lot of talent under McCoskey. If you recall Charlie's niece (McDonald) transferring from Northwestern to play at Kokomo you might recall all the angst by Northwestern fans since she was a board member at Northwestern. Her dad Mike used to catch for punchy's and think he caught a few times with Carl pitching.
