There's basically zero chance we pick up anyone else

The two and the three are pretty interchangeable but if everyone stays healthy, I would expect that Loyer, Smith and Jones are splitting 80 minutes again.

It’s not ideal, but if you had to, you could probably play two of Heidi, Colvin and Morton, along with Loyer, Smith or Jones.

You’ve got six guys to play three positions so they have enough bodies but the mix isn’t perfect.

I hope nothing happens to Smith as he’s the only ball handler. Maybe Jones can not sure.

This is a good call. Thinking maybe add a kid from a smaller level school that plays point that will be happy being on a top 5 team getting an extra year of school paid for. An emergency type of fill in capable of running the point just in case.

If you have to play Jones so much. PU is in trouble

Iam I missing something myles Colvin can play the 2 heide the 3 that's purdue best match up with those 2 in the game with edey

1-2 should be interchangeable as 4-5 and the 3 should be the most fluid/flexible player on the court when in need. This is where Colvin and Heide depending on matchups should shine for us.... hopefully.

It looks like we're in nearly the same position as last year. Swap out Jones for Jenkins. Jenkins played 15 minutes a game. Newman played the 2 some as well but I would hope either Heide or Colvin could fill that role. Newman played 18 minutes. Probably more at the 3 than at the 2 as the season progressed.

If our freshman improve marginally, we should be in better shape than last year. It's not like Jenkins or Newman set the world on fire.

Jones may not be a pure point, but from what I see in videos, he looks like he can give Purdue solid minutes behind Smith. He’s pretty quick with the ball.

I do appreciate the injury concern, however. Let’s hope Smith and even Jones stay healthy.

The only concern I have is at the 1 and 2 spots. Painter has not addressed the athletic element of the roster via transfer. I know some say Lance Jones is the athlete. I'm not buying it.

Yes, we have Colvin and Heide coming in. But neither have played a minute of college ball.

I see one ball handler in that group capable of breaking a good press.

I love beating a dead horse, but Painter has done a terrible job using the portal to upgrade the guard position, or even building much depth. Are you telling me there's not some athletic, ball handling guard at a non-P5 or lower level program who wouldn't jump at the chance to play at Purdue? I mean, the no-name teams beating us in the tourney recently seem to have these types of players.

Colvin is the one who brings elite athleticism. Nobody is claiming that about Jones.

What I see in Jones is kind of opposite of what I see in Heide. Heide appears to be a very good straight line athlete who can attack the rim with authority. Jones appears to be more of thick, low center of gravity athlete with the lateral quickness to pressure the ball and contain the dribble. I think that he’ll meet the need of a defensive backup point guard better than Jenkins did. Offensively, he looks quick enough with the ball to fill that role as well.

I think all three guys will help Purdue a lot.

I don't know about Jones but I agree, Smith is the only guy likely to break the press on his own. I think if other guys can be good decision makers that would go a long way.

But, Smith struggled with the press last year as well. I think a lot of that is just inexperience and some of that was being 5'11 and facing 6'5-6'7 long guys. I don't know enough about Heidi or Colvin's handles to see how well they can handle the ball in traffic.

True freshman and I think that the majority of the time he was very good against the press. Made freshman decisions at times and ran out of gas at others for sure. Agree that Heide and Colvin are question marks. I worry less about their handles than their decision making ability.

Nobody on the roster is going to break every trap on his own. It’s a team effort. That said, I think that both Smith and Jones will be fine against full court man pressure.

Colvin is 6"5 heide is 6"7 so no team will be able to trap purdue next year just listen to what painter said at the final 4 this year he talked about these 2 guys a lot these 2 are what purdue needs

They will help, but if they can trap a team with Jaden Ivey, they will try to trap next season until Purdue proves that they can make them pay. It’s up to the other guys to get the ball to Colvin and Heide in a position to take advantage.

Gillis is 6'6, Newman 6'5 and Morton 6'6, but they still struggled against the trap press. It's more than just being tall.

Am I the only one here who is reminded of the early 70's TV Western Alias Smith and Jones? Or the only one old enough? Or maybe just screwy enough? Ya gotta laugh sometimes.

Agree in general. My point was that there were games last year (Iowa) where Braden singlehandedly dismantled the press by blazing through it full speed and just blowing by defenders. If I remember correctly he also completely gassed himself pretty quickly doing so. I don't think we have anyone else on the roster capable of doing that.

Carsen Edwards used to be a one man press breaker also. After a while, teams quit pressing Purdue that year.

I recall last year many times we broke the press only to throw a bad pass immediately after breaking the press leading to a turnover!

A knockdown three point shooter would be what Purdue desperately needs!
Completely agree. Since it’s unlikely we’re gonna get that guy in the portal who are the guys currently on the roster of the potential to be someone that you’re terrified to leave open?

Maybe Smith, Loyer or Gillis can become that guy? Doesn’t seem like it will be Caleb, Trey or Ethan. Jones, Heide, Colvin and Waddell are all relatively new commodities at Purdue but that doesn’t seem to be their MO.

Different year same problem. Painter essentially did nothing to address the problem in the off-season except adding some 300+ ranked transfer. Going to be another early exit year in the tournament.

Didn't Loyer winsome sort of 3-point shooting contest? I understood him to be one of the best shooters in his class.

Ivey was too. As soon as it got in his hands, the majority of the time the opponent backed out of the press. We still struggled at times because for whatever reason we couldn't figure out how to get it to Ivey.

Yep really the first guy billed as a ‘shooter’ since Newman after not taking a true guard in the Furst and TKR class and not taking a pure shooter in the Morton and Ivey class. He’s going to get a ton of looks, some of which will have a pretty high degree of difficulty, it would be great to see him get that shooting percentage up by five points.

Would be nice to have some low volume guys hit those open shots consistently.
