I've had this stuck in my craw since the Cincy/UK game. I know it isn't any of my business, and at the end of the day it has no bearing on my life or Purdue, but what the hell was Derek Willis thinking? I can't seem to reconcile this in my head.
My first question would be for GBI-Brian. I know this is all hypothetical, but humor for me for a second. What kind of effect would DW have on the team the past three years? What about this last year? If I remember correctly, he was our prototypical 4. Could handle the ball, shoot the 3, inside/outside game etc...did he have the basketball brain that #4 had? Who knows, but otherwise, he sounded like the second coming of one of my all time favorite boilermakers. So, would he have started every game since his freshman year? Would he have been second team all big ten this year? I mean, what is the limit to which he could have achieved here, or anywhere else for that matter? Brian, I'm asking because I never saw him play in person. Would he have fit into the Boiler mold?
Is this truly a case of Del Willis saying "Son, I'm sorry, but you're going to UK, and you'll finish out your college career there, no matter what"? I mean, is that really possible? Aren't MOST athletes truly competitive individuals, which would lead me to believe that Derek is miserable beyond repair sitting on that bench, KNOWING he could have gone ANYWHERE else and played more than he is now? Is he not throwing away ANY chance he had of playing professionally? The scouts have literally nothing to go on. Does that not matter to him so he can have a ring? Or is this truly about Del?
My fellow knuckleheads, I just don't get it. Help me understand.
