Anyone else agree with me that Purdue's defense appears to be improving and is becoming a pleasant surprise? You don't go on a 26-2 run without playing stifling defense.

I like what Painter is doing schematically by playing very sound defense while running three point shooters off the line. If I look at Purdue's personnel, they don't seem like they should be good defensively, but they are playing so well as a unit that I don't see much of a drop-off from last year when they had much better individual defenders.

If Purdue can cut out the unforced turnovers, this team can be very good.

Too early to tell. That was the worst team we have played all year.

Improved and expected. she'll D is improved and bigs giving ground but staying big on drives. Carsen is farther along on December than I expected and his Freshman on the ball has helped. the team is sound on D and great on O at this time

I can't see all I type and then the phone changes D to December and a few other words

ASU was averaging about 87 points a game, which translates into 40+ per half. I think we held them to 20 something for the first half. That is good defense.

I agree that the defense is improving. But while watching the game, I couldn't help but wonder how much more dominant we would have been if we had only played a zone.

Agreed, very impressive first half. 2nd half was also solid as we never let them get back into it. Competition wasn't great but our execution and performance sure was.

especially if we were trapping out of a 1-3-1 with Haas cutting the court in half on top... ;)

Last year I thought Davis tried to be so aggressive that he "over helped" at times. When his primary responsibility was the opposition's best player (which was most games), his aggressiveness led to some tough defensive rotations and sometimes some easy baskets. So far this year, it does kind of seem like the team knows they don't have Davis and Hammons to fix their defensive mistakes so everyone needs to pull their weight. Still, I'd be pretty surprised if we still feel like this year's defense is better than last year when we get into the conference schedule.

but your point is reflected throughout life and accurate even if not a full replacement. Remove the crutch, demand individual responsibility and people will respond closer to what is needed. Shoot for perfection and catch something greater than average

I agree. Purdue, on both sides of the ball, is more the sum of the parts than it is each individual piece being overwhelming. They play like a smart, unselfish team on offense and have been improving each game on defense.

one of our weak points on defense is rim protection and i am not sure why more teams dont attack the basket more as neither biggie or haas can stop a quick player from scoring on them.
I think because Painter is playing a significant portion of the game, maybe the majority of it in some games with only one of Haas or Biggie on the floor. Also Biggie is much better this year at moving the puppies. I think the guards have improved defensively as well. Incremental improvement of several player defensively is helping to make up for the two excellent defenders lost to graduation. As mentioned earlier, if we reduce the turnovers the D gets even better.
