It’s as much trusting the process as it is trusting Painter. Some fans want to jump to the conclusion that the right answer now was the same right answer in November. This team had to play through some different lineups and approaches to get to where they are now, there are no shortcuts.
Trusting MP and the process doesn’t mean that he doesn’t make mistakes, it means that coaches and players need to make mistakes to learn from them and get better, regardless of what we as fans would prefer to see.

Which player was injured? Jacquil Taylor was injured that year, but was out the entire season. I'm not recalling any other injuries that year.
Haarms came in Jan of the 2016-2017 season when he redshirted.
Haas was injured in the NCAA tourney the next season.

The biggest upside for him to put on weight and getting stronger is, probably the presumed starter at the 5 next year. I don’t want to speculate but I just don’t see Berg coming back knowing he is going to backup Jacobsen. Might be good idea to go to the Portal if there is a serviceable big with 1 year.

I’m not sure he’d be the first guy up to be the backup to Jacobsen…I’d think burgess would be the main backup to DJ and TKR. And berg is more of a 3-5 min guy…if he stays. I’d have to imagine we dip into the portal for another big
What kind of big do you want? A backup to Jacobsen? A backup to TKR? A starter?
As unlikely as that may seem, it is more likely than IU getting Brad.
8-12 min guy who is quicker than Berg laterally, quick to react (no offense to Berg), and a rim protector. Tough to find, but there may be a few guys at mid majors that could do that. This guy can be the 4th man in the front court rotation.
I kinda like Konan from PSU. I know he probably wouldn’t want to play less than his 23 min a game right now, but man, having him come off the bench to spell one of our bigs and be a lob threat/rim protector. He could back up TKR as a non 3pt threat so they wouldn’t be on the floor at the same time. But Coach B could whip into shape 😂
Yes he is one of several that would be great. I not going to worry about who though, as I trust our staff to make our team better this off season. Be kinda disappointed if they don't.
Why not just grab a guy who can start beside TKR and bring DJ along slowly? Maybe split time like Edey and Williams.

Yes, agree. I am sure CMP will not just bring any guy in. When he makes a move, it will be someone who in his opinion will help the team. Given the numbers in the portal, I expect him to be fairly active in doing due diligence in the right guy(s).

Agree. He adapts and wins. The first adaptation isnt always fruitful but he will get the most out of the team and what it looks like maybe completely different than what he started with or what weve done in the past. Hes found certain things and personality traits that he likes as well. I doubt he will ever get the horses to win a national title but hes going to keep purdue relevant as long as hes coaching.

But if the idea here is to get a comparison to Wooley and an Ostrich, the best comparison is probably they both tend to lay giant eggs. In fact, it is true, like Wooley, ostriches lay the largest egg of any living animal. But then that assumes that Wooley is a living animal, which I am assuming he is.
I would hope. He has the height, skill, rim protecting ability, quickness and shooting touch to make a real impact. At least more than berg IMO
I expect that would be a high draft pick quality player. It would be great, if we could win the bidding war. Or if Painter worked his magic and found another hidden gem.
I don't buy DJ is a going to the NBA player just yet, but he's clearly talented enough that you're probably not finding a better option in the portal than him at the 5 or TKR at the 4.
But you can find a better option than Berg.
I think you find someone who has maybe 2 seasons left to help bridge the gap in depth next season and who bridges the gap the following season when TKR leaves.
I mean the portal has been around for about five minutes so I am not sure past is prologue at this early point.
We also have two more spots opening up which isn't like before.
Painter isn't a robot who never ever ever changes anything he does ever. He can be a bit slow to change for sure but he does do it.
Well, technically, he's only had two transfer portal players, IIRC - both guards needed initially as secondary ball handlers who could also provide some scoring. David Jenkins was a solid role player off the bench, and Lance Jones worked out as well as Painter could have hoped for in being a key starter last year.
If you want to go back to graduate transfer days - mostly backcourt with Jon Octeus, Sterling Carter, Johnny Hill, and Spike Albrecht. Front court additions included Errick Peck and Evan Boudreaux.
Matt Painter, as stubborn as he may appear, has shown a willingness to adapt - although maybe not on the preferred schedule of many.

Painter was quoted as saying "I'll go in when I have to" referring to the transfer Portal.
He hasnt had a need in the transfer portal for a big man, not sure he will have a need next year with Jacobson and TKR. (Berg and Burgess too)
Technically under Keady, but during Painters first year, so he was the assistant head coach when Keady went and got Carl Landry who was a power forward.
Will we have any open scholarships next year unless we have a transfer? West in, Furst out right?

Weren't both Jones and Jenkins both grad transfers so they fit under the old rules?

Edit, yes they were transfer portal players but would have qualified under the old rule. Lance Jones might be one of my favorite players of all time. Never seen anyone play with such joy and so excited to be a Boiler.
Throwing in regular transfers for Painter, in the front court, there was also Nemanja Calasan (aka "Chally").

Berg isn't going to be doing anything next season. We need another big this season and he isn't doing anything, not sure why folks keep thinking we don't need another big for depth because we have Berg.
We've seen this year that only having three viable bigs leaves us vulnerable. We're only going to have three viable bigs next season too. There are better players than Berg who will fit just fine with this team and culture who will be in the portal.
