Crystal Ball of Football Season

I think that the rest of the season can be seen in Purdue's first 2 Offensive Drives and 2 Defense Stands.

Dream Best Case:
2 TD's and 2 TO's [14-0] (fumble or interception) - Bowl Eligible

Realistic Best Case:
2TD's and 2 Stops [14-0] (forced punts on 3 and outs, forced punts after 1-2 First Downs, missed or blocked FG after red zone) - Flirt with Bowl Eligibility

Other Best Cases:
2TD's and 1 Stop [14-7 or 14-3] - 5 win season
2TD's and 0 Stop [14-14 or 14-10 or 14-6] - Still 5 win season
1TD | 1FG and 2 Stops [10-0] - Last chance for 5 win season

Improved Purdue team:
1TD | 1FG and 1 stop [10-7 or 10-3] - 4 win season
1TD | 1FG and 0 stops [10-14 or 10-10 or 10-6] - Still an outside chance at 4 win
1TD and 2 stops (multiple first downs) [7-0] - Last chance for 4win season

Slightly Improved Purdue team:
1FG and 2 stops (multiple first downs) [3-0] - 3 win season
1TD and 1 stop [7-7 or 7-3] - 3 win season
1FG and 1 stop [3-7 or 3-3] - Outside chance for 3 win season
No score - Last chance for 3 win season

Purdue Team used to being seen (offense must get at least 1 First Down per drive):
No offensive points and 2 stops (3 and outs) - 2 win season, especially if defense scores on a turnover.
No offensive points and 2 stops (multiple first downs) [0-0] - Outside chance for 2 win season (no turnovers)
No offensive points and 1 stop | 1FG [0-3] - Last Chance for 2 win season

Regressed Purdue team (3 and outs on offense):
No Offensive points and 1 stop | 1TD [0-7] - 1 win season (this game)
No Offensive points and 0 Stops - 0 win season.

Ceiling and Basement for our football team in my opinion on first 2 drives on both sides of the ball.

I know Hazel has really sucked the last 3 years, I am hoping for a greatly improved team or the same as last three years, that way Purdue wins either way, with a better team or new coach. If a better team then it has to be on the OC and DC , if same as before its time to clean house.

What will the season be like if we throw a pick six on our first play? Oh wait.....

Fire everyone on staff at end of game and remove all players scholarships.

We'll become the real Boilermakers again and hire police/steel mill workers throughout area to finish season.

What we've seen the past 3 years has been awful, not expecting much from the season. I will say we do have a few positions I'm confident in going into the year. Those being LB, that group is big, fast, and has played well before. RB should be solid even without Knox, Jones is a stud. I don't think our Oline will be as bad as some think. The interior should be solid with Roos, King, and Barron. At tackle Cermin is serviceable and I was impressed with a young Patterson at times last year. If we can get some solid Tackle play it could be an improved unit. DL (outside of Jake), TE, CB, S, we are thin and it could be a struggle.

4 wins really seems bullish which is sad so I'll say 3-9 and we're looking for a new coach in December.

I think a new OC has to improve the offense because I really don't see how you can do worse than Shoop but there just doesn't seem to be much talent to compete with most P5 teams even with a better scheme (I also have to wonder how Jones will hold up with such a heavy work load).

The defense has Replogle who's great but not much else (the linebackers do have potential but they never seem to be healthy so I don't know if you can really count on them to be difference makers all season).

I think they win week 1 and get 2-3 more wins against the weaker teams on the schedule (Nevada, Maryland, Illinois, IU). It's ridiculous how low the bar has been set but 4-8 with wins against E. Kentucky, Nevada, Maryland and IU (who I think lost a lot from last year) would be a better than expected season in my mind.

I just simply think if we don't see something energetic and different on both sides of the ball in the 1st quarter (2 offensive/2 defensive drives) against E. Kentucky, then we have the potential of no positive change.

I think the odds are more in favor of Purdue not winning any of the games and going 0-12 than winning multiple games.

You can sum up that review in two words: Rock Bottom.
We win 4 and Burk give Hazell a new contract to 2024. Last game at home Hazell calls time out with 2 min. to go and Burk leaves the side lines and walks across the field giving the finger to the Purdue faithful!!

Well that was depressing.
You thought that was depressing, just wait till September...

Whenever I think about this football season, for some reason that avicii/aloe blacc song plays in my head, "wake me up when it's all over..."

Or to paraphrase green day, "wake me up, when November ends"

if we lose to E. Kentucky does he get fired immediately or does he get to play out the season?

Burke wont fire immediately and the AD search is dragging out long enough that i doubt the new guy will be in place before mid august. that isnt enough time to really take action.

Of course I want Purdue to be successful, but I'll believe it when I see it. Last year prior to the season, hazel said we'd "fall in love" with the team. I'm not sure what he was basing that on, but it certainly wasn't wins. Or even closely played games for that matter. So in the meantime, I will be thrilled with 6 wins, content with 4 wins, and expect 2 wins.

Wish Schoop was gone sooner, oh well, I believe Malone will have a Very positive effect on our QB's, his years being down in NOrleans with Brees, has got to pay dividends when coaching Collegiate QB's,, , Sean Payton too, not a bad QB coach, expecting big things from our Oline, keeping our Defense off the field, running the Rock, eatin' the Clock.....Boiler Up!!!

Malone isnt the QB coach.

Certainly know Lester is the QB coach, but I still believe Malone has been around and involved with great Offensive schemes and how to implement and transfer that knowledge imo

Here is my yearly preseason wishful thinking that never comes to fruition:
I may be delusional, but seeing how our schedule sets up combined with the bad breaks we had last year and bad coaching that is gone...I believe 6 wins is very attainable...especially if our linebacking core stays healthy unlike last year and Blough gets off to a good start and builds some confidence. Simplified offense with very experienced receivers who should know how to get open by now and a QB who is capable....plus Markell Jones..
None of the Road games are exactly definite losses (Maryland, ILL, Nebraska, MINN, IU) and we start off with 3 straight home games that are all winnable.

We've had 3 really bad years, but our schedule is SO SOFT and I think our offensive continuity is good enough that there is absolutely no reason that 6 wins isn't attainable...even if we aren't very good. I have a feeling we will be playing in a lot of high scoring games this season, which even if we lose, will still be fun to watch.

but even if the offense is simplified, it's still new to all of the team right? hopefully our guys can learn it, and opponents scouting will not be familiar with it enough as the season progresses.

That is one of the biggest issues I had with the Malone hire. If there was any inkling to firing Shoop and giving Malone a legit look at the job, why not fire Shoop and give the offense to Malone so the players could have more time to adjust to the scheme in actual game scenarios.

When your 1-14 on the road (IIRC) with CDH every road game looks like a definite loss to me

Hoping for success with Hazell as coach is like peeing in the ocean and expecting the water level to rise! Purdue will be lucky to win 3 games!

I will say Purdue ends up 4-8....wins against EKU, Nevada, and two against Northwestern, Penn State, Illinois, or Indiana.

The big question...does 4-8 assure DH of another year at Purdue? It would constitute an improvement with his own players in the program. I have to say yes UNLESS Sumlin, Briles, or another relatively well known coach becomes available.

A question that was posed to me and I wasn't really sure how to answer: Would you be upset if Purdue hired Jim Grobe if Baylor let him go after this season?

4-8 is my prediction also.

4 wins in year 4 is not good enough anywhere. 6 at a minimum. Which actually is possible if the injury bug hits all the teams you mentioned.

No on Grobe.

Agree, No.
A definite no considering that would match DH1's worst record.

No to grobe, primarily for ageist reasons.
Edit: looking bAck at his wake record - under .500 total, and most consecutive winning seasons - 3.

Grobe is at best a "caretaker" at this point in his career. Thanks to Morgue, we now need a "force of nature" hire.

Force of Nature: Hire Nick Saban. For him to prove he is the All Time Best College Football Coach.

Metaphorically, his change at Purdue would be the same as him pulling the Titanic off the bottom of the ocean, change it so much it is now capable of warp speed and trumps the Starship Enterprise.

...one can dream.

6 wins wasn't good enough for Hope in a season where he took two undefeated teams to the brink. Same standard needs to apply...

We get a new coach, period. Hopefully the new AD won't be so tone deaf, as Burke was. My opinion of DH is someone else did the real work at Kent State, DH was just the front man. He might be an ok WR coach but that is it. His lack of running a team down to his piss poor clock management was exposed the past 3 years you can blame players for all kinds of things but clock management is all the HC... I'm sure his mind will be on packing up his crap and getting his house ready to go on the market. He will have no work for at least 3 years, then maybe a high school will pick him up as an AA hire. I still believe he was an AA hire for us, if only that guy who hacked Hillary and the DNC would hack the Purdue Athletics servers I'm sure there is an email directing Burke or "encouraging" him to make such a hire. Hope he manages his ill gotten millions well, FRN's keep losing purchasing power at an alarming rate.
