with Johnny Hill? I realize it may be way too early to praise, or blame for that matter, a player with only one game under his belt, but he doesn't seem to force anything. Sometimes it is a gamble with players like JH, but I'm starting to think CMP made a safe bet on this one. Hell, he's averaging 5 assists/2 steals/5 rebs. a game!!!! Any thoughts?

So far, he has played above and beyond my expectations. Very quick & aggressive on defense, but our depth allows him to play in such a way. Only question I have is his shooting.

Painter has a great eye for talent. He has made some mistakes sure, but for the most part he seems to really be able to find "hidden gems".

I don't think I'd call it finding hidden gems. Hill chose Purdue after visiting Baylor and Illinois.

I do think he has a great eye for talent and good fits. Obviously sometimes things don't pan out (Ronnie Johnson was nothing like his brother), but Swanigan fits Purdue's system - we aren't just forcing ourselves to placate a 5 star so we can get one.

I think it's the surrounding cast that made JO and Hill (so far) look good. They simply aren't asked to come in and be world changers. They are asked to just not screw up. They are coming in to fill an immediate need and they know that from the beginning and they aren't promised anything other than a fair shot.

True.........and it takes a special player, IMO, to accept those terms. I mean they all have a dream of playing at the next level, so it would be easy to be a "me" type player at this stage in their collegiate career, but JO didn't do that.......and I hope JH doesn't either. Hopefully, in a perfect world, it works out for both university and player. Boiler the f*ck up!!!

This. I would say that some of his mistakes on judging budding talent were also made by others, when a player just didn't develop as expected. I'd say his worst recruiting mistakes came in taking a gamble on talented kids who weren't "team players".

Loved JO, and I think Hill is now also doing very well. He just needs to defend at a high level and protect/distribute the basketball on offense. Score when the opportunity arises, but never force. Rebound & fight to win the 50-50 plays. So far, so good. Glad to have you on the team Johnny!

Hill played some great defense Friday and is a VERY solid player. Thats all we need because every other player on the floor can score.
