Brohm and Hope

I liked Hope. He could've done more with support from the AD. But if anyone's actually watched the games, they should see Brohm has been a lot more competitive in the BIG compared to Hope. Brohm squads are almost always in the game, while Hope's teams regularly got blown out when playing better teams.

I kind of do. He had a little fire. May not have been a good look to do that though but I don’t mind it. He may not have been that great of a coach but he seemed to really have fun coaching and cared for his guys and they seemed to care about him as well. I don’t think you can say the same about Hazell and his guys and I really don’t know about Brohm and his
I liked Danny Hope too. I loved Joe Tiller, those teams were so fun to watch. I would have loved to see Purdue invest in the program for him like they have for Brohm. It seemed assistants were constantly leaving back then for better paying jobs. I thought the staff Coach Tiller brought with him from Wyoming was awesome.

Just some food for thought on coaching records. Mark Stoops was 26-36 after his first 5 seasons at Kentucky (a “basketball school” in the SEC). He has since had 10-3, 8-5, 5-6 seasons and tonight they beat LSU to become bowl eligible at 6-0 and #16 in the country. My point here is that there is reason to believe that UK sticking it out with Stoops has yielded some decent results and perhaps the “give Brohm more time” folks have a decent argument. We simply don’t know at this point. I just think it’s an interesting case study.

It’s kinda true and kinda not…

you have a point in 2017.. because the players that hazell recruited early on were upper class men …

the gift of hazell began as the years progressed. Yeah, the 2017 team had some good players. The defensive line graduated and the next guys who were supposed to be there just weren’t there because the guy who hazell was supposed to recruit to replace those guys, save Lorenzo Neal for most of one season (before the injury when he never the same), just weren’t there.

or in 2019 when the 18 OL graduates and same thing.. by the time it was time to recruit would be replacements for 2019, nobody wanted to come to Purdue anymore.

I’m one of the few people here who doesn’t either think brohm can do no wrong or that he’s the worst. That has to be less than 25% of posters here. If most posters here took a truth serum they’d admit that they probably either loved tiller till the end and so they hated hope (also for not being Brock spack), so therefore they loved hazell and now hate brohm OR they wanted tiller GONE NOW at the end, therefore they loved hope, therefore they hated hazell and therefore they probably love brohm, will hate his replacement and love his replacements replacement.

****.. most people here can probably trace their 2021 QB preference to … whether they liked kirsch or Orton in 2002 lmao.

All that said.. I’m sorry, i do blame brohm for hiring diaco which he fixed and for sticking with Williams for as long as he did (which he must fix even if callaway is not to blame)… BUT I’m not gonna blame brohm for having to rely on Geo friggin Reviere and Kai Higgins.. if hazell did his job, regardless of 2017, Brennan thienemann is probably a highly regarded backup and special teams player and we have a player at least as good as Chris Jefferson until Marvin was ready.

Try to understand that if hazell had left players of Gelen Robinson’s caliber behind .. players who could have been relied on in 2018 and 19, well you do better those years and maybe you get your hands on a couple Andre Oben’s in those classes who DONT HAVE TO gain 50 lbs to play big ten ball, and now you’ve got the OL sufficient for us to break Minnesota’s back and laugh in larry from threes company’s face

Everything affects everything else. Hazell really screwed us and CHANGED OUR TRAJECTORY in 2018-20
Many here have interpreted my original post as an attack on Brohm but that really wasn't my point. I just stumbled upon the fact that after 49 games Brohm and Hope have the exact same record. Other posters came in and immediately felt the need to defend Brohm. Which is great but some of the one liners being thrown out could be discredited with a review of the roster, stats and the results. It makes for an interesting conversation.

For the record, I was done with Danny Hope at the time of his firing. Probably spoiled by the Tiller years, the disappointment that came with the high hopes in 2012 and Hope's us against the world (even the fans) attitude. I also think firing Brohm would be really risky and I'm not even close to thinking that would be a good idea.

I think he will be the heir apparent to Capt. Kirk when he retires.

Thank you Mrs.Brohm for that update but I don`t care about Kentuck football and that comparison with Purdue and coach Brohm record at Purdue. We are losing games to teams that we should be beating after he has coached for 5 years for the money Purdue pay`s.

Oh no I don’t get upset about others thinking something other than what I think.. I think that’s weird lol.

I was just giving my take.. do you agree that, as usual the truth is somewhere in between? Hazell didn’t leave brohm with zero good players and didn’t leave him with the talent Coletto left for tiller. He left him in a bad position but it wasn’t apparent until 2018.. in 2017 he did leave tiller some good players.

the lesson hope taught me is be careful what you wish for. There’s whether a coach should be fired in a vacuum.. and then there’s the questing

“what has your school done that makes them marketable as far as hiring someone better than the guy you have now?”

tiller was done when he left anyway, but when both he and hope left, we really weren’t in a position to answer the question “who you gonna get?” I still don’t think we are relative to Brohm being a C+ coach.. I don’t think Purdue can get better than a C+ coach consistently … if Brohm turns into a D coach. Okay.. we can do better than that

Who are you gonna get?

This program is trending to eclipse where it was in 2017.
The major difference now is the sustainability of the roster and recruiting, with less reliance on transfers. This year isn't about band-aids and duct tape. It's mostly home grown talent. The investment in those last few recruiting classes is now starting to pay off. Would have seen these returns last year if not for the Diacofense costing at least 2 games.

Oh, and Brohm is now the most winning Purdue coach since Tiller.

The difference to me is this defense. It looks to be built to be stout and is well-conceived. The style of this defense will tend to attract more athletes like Grant and Graham and Strickland and George because they are free to attack and make plays instead of being bound to lanes like in the Diaco 3-4. Diaco’s defense went more side-to-side in the lanes and the first step was often backwards.

Hope will always be a Boiler and his players loved the heck outta the guy. It was def time to move on since the prior AD weren't going to invest in him

Joe tiller was a better coach than Jeff brohm thus far. Joe tiller did inherit better.. and also won 9 games his first year
Joe Tiller is a Purdue legend, and rightfully so.

He also inherited an incredibly mature, deep and talented team, with many future NFL players.

None of that makes Tiller a better or worse coach. He was in the right place at the right time, and it's intellectually lazy to compare the two.

People do that.. they act like, just because someone got a few advantages, that means you can drop anyone in there and it’s 9 wins. and the fact is, you could give a lot of guys that roster and not have them win 9.

Nice post. You understand the player cycle, and the damage done by Hazel to the program. Lack of good underclassmen to replace those good seniors was a killer for a couple years and accounts for Brohm struggling after a fast start.

.

At this point, I do think we can turn a corner if we continue to get top 40 recruiting classes and keep a staff in place that can develop these kids. Lots of impatience around here this summer on the current Jrs. Even though they had a Fr. season to get introduced, a Diaco/CoVID season keeping them from developing.

Lots of these guys like Alexander, Deen, Grant, Allen, etc are really only now getting to play sustained D1 football and it’s really showing.

To compare this regime to Hope’s is ignorant IMO. So much more going on in conference, in cfb as a whole and with this team that says we MAY be pointed in a much better direction.

So in the future, we will be referring to 2020 as the DIACOVID year?

Thought we'd beat this to death...
The AD doesn't set the budget. It's no mystery that things miraculously changed with a new President in 2012 (and changes within the BoT), resulting in a much different financial emphasis in the years that followed.
