On defense: full court press and trap shortening the length of time they have to run their sets - ie running Dakota off screen keeping he and Biggie on same side. Less time for bigs to decide to shoot or pass out of double team.

On offense: high screen and roll to force Purdue bigs to come out high - they are not athletic enough to recover if guard drives around them or defend the pass to the screening big.

Must exploit lack of athleticism and slow feet on perimeter and inability to block shots by bigs.

I could of sworn we won last night.

The game was close because of turnovers, not hitting open looks and probably taking PSU a little too lightly. Things we did to ourselves moreso than what PSU did to us.

I hear what you're saying.

Maybe it's my Black & Old Gold glasses, but it appears to me that Purdue has gotten a little better with the high screen and roll defense.....still a weakness, however. The lack of shot blocking has started to rear its ugly head these days......repeatedly mentioned on the broadcast last night. and rightfully so. Teams have no real fear attacking the basket.

Overall, however, I think the Boilers have gotten better defensively...including IH....some teams will be able to exploit Purdue's defensive liabilities, and like BoilersRock states....some teams can't/.won't. FT shooting has been very very good......ultimately......JMO.....I think it's going to be the turnovers and how Purdue handles back-court pressure that determines things.....one way.....or the other.

It might be just one or two possessions. Yes, if the defense can improve, getting more stops helps. Will it come down to getting one or two key stops or making one or two key buckets? maybe/probably both.

Purdue has enough offensive weapons/options to make a lot of teams pay.....even some really good teams....just need to execute when it really counts.

Easy, with this information in our opponents hands we shouldn't win another game all year. Thanks for ruining the season!

I thought so too.

I love it when people think basketball is only about game plans and coaching adjustments and neglect to factor in execution. Penn State tried to do those same things to us the first time we played. We executed better. They didn't execute nearly as well. We blew them out. Now because they came back and made it close one game there is all of a sudden a "blueprint" of how to beat us.

It's not exactly rocket science that athletic guards/wings can give us fits. It's not like Pat Chambers just forgot to tell Carr to play well against us the first time so he only went 2 of 11. Execution matters.....on BOTH sides.

Right on target. This secret "Beat Purdue" formula has been tried before, in just about every game we have p in the BIG - more or less. Many teams did not or could not press us, but many tried. Have no doubt, but PSU is a talented team. Young but talented. If they play like they did against us, they can be a top 3 team in the BIG next year.

Did anyone notice how, later in the game, Vince floated into the middle when his man was on the wing and the ball went above the circle? He was so far from his man that Cline (the two times I paid attention, it was Cline) ran out from the block to take Vince's man while Vince clogged the middle, dropping down to pick-up Cline's man. They did it very smoothly, as experienced players should, but it had to be something they were told to do. The two times I paid attention, PSU didn't drive the ball down the lane, they swung it to a wing/corner. I didn't record the game, so I can't go back and really take a look at what was happening.

Oh yeah. Also have Purdue play poorly relative to their norm. Your points have merit but just because a team employs the strategy does not mean it will always be effective.

Don't agree. As with any good coach, if PSU were to play that against us again, my opinion would be we would beat them more soundly. One, at half-time Purdue coaching adjusted, and looked somewhat better in the second half. Two, given even more time to prep for the potential in the future of "the full court press and trap", we would take advantage of the "cons" associated with this blueprint. So I just don't think its that simple...if it was, anyone with athletes would do it. And so far, not many, including PSU, have...
