Big10 championship

We're going to need to exercise some patience. Going from DFL to mid pack in the B1G and being competitive in every game is great, but it's a much taller task to get to the top of the heap. Coaching can get you to 7-6, but we're going to need commensurate talent to Wisconsin and Michigan St. in order to compete for a title. As much as recruiting has upticked, we still have a ways to go. If we can avoid a setback this year and get back to a bowl game I will be happy. From there, adding an average of 1 win per year would be a reasonable goal. So, to answer the original question, that would mean competing for the title in 3-4 years.

How long did it take Dantonio? Alvarez?

Hope could recruit individuals well enough. He was awful at assembling a roster. Our offensive line in his tenure was proof enough of that.

Spack probably wouldn’t have set the world on fire, but he was a very good recruiter in his own right and brought several good players from Georgia and Michigan. Also, he is a far superior in game coach

Really?

Based on what?

I've introduced the results of the two as Head Coaches. Spack's record doesn't seem to back up your argument.

Go look at spacks conference record. Never less tha .500. Can’t say the same for hope.

Huh? Are you arguing FOR or AGAINST Spack?

Danny Hope's record at FCS EKU is head and shoulders above Brock Spack's record at FCS Illinois State.

For.

1) hope inherited a better program. His own former head coach said he wasn’t the right guy
2) spack has 2 of the 3 conference titles in isu history.

Different viewpoints are fine. Droning on and on about people who are long gone gets old and tired.

We can play that bit if you folks want. It just seems really petty.

But, hey, have at it if it's your thang!

Your post is hard to understand. You say talking about the past and people who are long gong gets old and tired. And then you start talking about Spack. So you hate others talking about the past, but it's ok when you argue with others about the past and previous coaches who most of us could care less about. Spack had his chance. He's not coming back, and I could care less what he's doing now.

I'm just trying to understand. I also could care less about past coaches. I'm just here with my cheese nips to read all the name calling arguments.

Okay, but you just went from:

which was completely false ... to arguing which inherited the better program.

Brock Spack's record at IL State was nowhere near Danny Hope's at EKU. Your argument is that Brock significantly improved IL St. Okay, but he took over for a coach that was routinely around .500 in conference play. In fact, Denver Johnson finished 9 years with a record of 40-32. Which . . . is what Spack has done, but with 2 years at 7-1.

To be clear, Spack has improved ISU, and has a better overall conference record than his predecessor. It's been only 2 years that have really done that for him, but it is what it is, nonetheless.

With all that said, THAT is what you think Burke should have hired over Hope?

Don't try to understand. His arguments are all over the place. Just remember, you're the crazy one...

Brother...! .... keep up!

I'm only talking about Spack because that's what OTHERS injected into the discussion. (i.e., Spack would have been better!)

I did not inject Spack into the discussion. REPEAT! I DID NOT bring Brock Spack into the discussion!

Please!

C'mon, Bigs. I DID NOT START TALKING ABOUT SPACK!

LOL!

Oh my.

Rod Serling, eat your heart out!

True.

Given that, it doesn't seem like that served Spack well, given the comparisons.

No?
I mean Spack has 4 of 7 playoff appearances and 2 of 3 MVC titles in school history. Not exactly a football power prior to his arrival. Overall his winning % at ISU is slightly higher than what Hope did at EKU. But EKU had some ridiculous streak of consecutive winning seasons before his arrival. I would say Spack has done well at IL State

Great! All that and 3 bucks would get him a cup o' joe at the neighborhood overpriced coffee house.

I'll concede: He would have been great, had Burke just given him the job.

There.

Are we all good?

Ok 85, I'll cut you some slack, since you called me by my real name rather than the backwards version of it.

However, as both of us will admit, it does get boring having people here talking and constantly dwelling on the problems of our past as if there was something we could do to fix them. And even our greatest coaches and ADs had their flaws.

I'm not even sure what this thread was. Supposed to be about. We are so easily distracted and sidetracked .

Did you do your own research?

First, Dantonio took over a program with recent success, and is a very poor comparison.

Second, Alvarez had 3 straight losing seasons. Again, poor comparison.

Win NOW....that’s why these get paid the big bucks. Doesn’t need to be any comparisons. The time is NOW! Brohm did an excellent job in year 1 and now it’s time to compete for a championship.

I just saw the title and originator of this thread. Now I realize how the conversation has shifted so much. The focus of every coach should be to win a championship and to build a team capable of doing so. The focus should never be to build a team to win 3-5 games.

Some coaches use a win now approach while others like to build one. Either way is ok as long as the objective is the same.

Just my 2-cents worth, but I would tend to say not this coming year. I like the offense, but there are too many unknowns for me on defense. Further out than that I hesitate to speculate, but I do think we will continue to improve each year. I agree about Coach Brohm. The product on the field was a lot better last year and recruiting has been picking up since he and his staff arrived. They deserve a lot of credit. I am very excited to see just what this team can do this coming season and see which of the young men coming in contribute right off the bat. I am anxiously waiting to see who they can bring in for 2019 as well.
Although I agree with your thoughts, I must admit, with The Brothers Brohm & Squad running the show, everything has been kicked up about 10 notches, across the board. It’s great to see. But, as a life long Purdue fan, saying goodbye to our graduating or early departure player(s) has not been welcomed. (All Boiler Sports but primarily bball & fball). After 3-5 years, I have my own bond with our kids, but particularly because my brain cannot even conceive how we’ll take the field or floor without them or how we could possibly win a single game without these kids...lol! But in just one years time, these brothers that coach our Beloved Boilermakers of The Gridiron and the staff said brothers built so tactfully around them, has completely and thoroughly shifted the landscape I focus on. I’ve gone from “who on earth is going fill this seemingly massive void” to watching a ton of HS recruit, signee highlights yelling “holy cow I can’t wait to see these young men bring it every game in the Old Gold & Black”. I’m very appreciative that saying goodbye only sucks half as bad as it used to. These brothers are something for sure. Creating exactly what they’ve envisioned while still envisioning it. I for one hope we have a Brohm as our head coach or even a possible future AD until the end of time. Hallalluya! Class acts.

one of the most memorable speeches by a Purdue AD was the one where he said, I believe with this new coach hiring and the new improvements we've made. we can set our sites at being at .500 and in the upper half of the BIG 10. I will always remember those words. Who sets their sites/goal at only .500? It's one thing to predict a .500 season. It's another thing to have it as your goal for success. Your goal should always be to win a championship, not to reach mediocrity. Thankfully the person who uttered those words is gone.
