Would you consider Swanigan one of the best, if not the best? I know Glenn Robinson, Joe Barry Carroll, and some of the standouts from the '60's and early/mid '70's were up there as well.

If Biggie starts blocking shots like Aj. Wow.

Didn't Mike Robinson do pretty well as a rebounder?

Some guys just know where the ball is going to be. Biggie also knows how to make space and goes to the ball. Very glad he's a Boiler.

I think Mike Robinson was pretty good his senior season (Keady and staff had him playing in the paint more by then), but he never averaged double-figures or anything like that.

Certainly heading that way, Nage....Terry Dischinger has the highest per game average I think.

CS has a "knack" for the ball....and you combine that with all-out effort (sometimes fending off teammates)......and that's why he's already had multiple 20 rebound games. I think he has a shot at JBC's single-season record for total rebounds.

Terry Dischinger I believe led in scoring and rebounding for 3 years(Frosh didn't play)Carl McNulty(Washington Twp. of Cass county-now part olf Lewis Cass)still holds the record for one game.Terry,Jerry Lucas,Walt Bellamy,Jerry West and Oscar Robertson started for 1960 Olympic team that I consider the first dream team.

Unquestionably ... just look at what each of them accomplished during the rest of their lives.

I'd say in the top 5 at least. Tremendous combination of controlling his area and getting out of area boards. Not many can out muscle him. Wants it bad also.

As always, thanks for the thoughts, Owl. The Big Ten was well represented on that great Olympic squad, one of the finest amateur teams ever.

Mike was a very good offensive rebounder...quick jumper, only about 6'6" but had a good nose for the ball. Stanback was a great offensive rebounder as well. Biggie has the size AND the desire to be a great rebounder ...and he is.

Owlbird...love the history to remind me. Carl used to run a guard to pass to the wing and cut to the basket and set a cross screen for a 5 coming across the lane to get a pass from the wing with the ball. Ran it for years and continued to work...

Didn't the differing set of rules back in the '50's, '60, and '70's (particularly with jump-balls, before going to alternating possessions in the '81-'82 season) affect the rebound output of players? I think if you put Swanigan in a game with those kind of rules, he could have as many or more rebounds on average than guys like Dischinger did.

I know, it's almost impossible to compare eras since the game has changed so much.

no jump balls never affected the rebound. Lot of 12-15 foot shooting which should keep rebounds closer, but no break away rims that today soften the bounce. regardless I have a lot of admiration for Biggie's work ethic and he ranks up there with the best

Would have been interesting to see the single season rebounding figures William Franklin might have put up in the 1971-72 season had he not left early during the Big 10 portion of the season to go pro.

Biggie is a stud. This team would be much different without him, very glad Painter landed him.

Biggie is great to have, no doubt. I have a lot of admiration for this "made" ball player. The work he has put in should serve as an example to many.

Carl was a very good high school coach at Elwood and Kokomo and also one of the best fast pitch softball pitchers in the state(Quality Ice Cream team Logansport).Joe Platt was also a very good HS basketball coach for Kokomo and a member of a Purdue musical chairs.Ray Eddy coached Madison to the HS title in 1950 and accepted the job at Kokomo but before ever coaching a game was hired by Purdue.Purdue coach Mel Taube headed to Carleton College and Joe Platt left Carleton for Kokomo.

Don Beck played forward and jumped center in 1955 and at 6'5" won the tip 7 out of 8 times in our 6 overtime loss to Minny(who had a 7'0" center).Don also was /is Curtis Painter's maternal Grandfather.Beck,Jecha,Lundy,Sexson,Thornburg,Blind,Dunn,Bonhomme,Lorenz, and maybe Joe Campbell were on the team.Jecha was from Illinois the rest from Indiana(six from the North Central Conference).

Plat wanted a lot more shots than the opponent I understand. I recall Carl being the pitcher you state. Carl wouldn't know me...does know a brother-in-law that borrowed the set play I described from Carl. Last time I talked to Carl was a few years ago. Ray Eddy was coach when another brother-in-law was offered. Bob King was the asst back then. I guess I forgot about Carl coaching at Elwood. I do remember Darrell McQuitty (Purdue player) that played at Elwood and later coached there...I'm guessing early 80's? I really appreciate you taking me back a few years Owl. :)

Rebounds are counted after a missed shot. That rule hasn't changed.

Hey Owl,

I'm assuming that's the same Joe Campbell from Purdue golf. I didn't realize he was also on the basketball team. I took one of his golf courses....he was a great teacher and overall pleasant man from my limited exposure....I think his time playing for Purdue just pre-dated Nicklaus' at Ohio State.

Joe Platt was from Young America and was a coach at Logansport(Under Cliff Wells) in 1942.In 1943 while serving our great Uncle Sam he brought the Bunker Hill Naval Air Force Base baseball team to Riverside Park in Logansport. His two SUPERSTAR players were Ted Williams and John Pesky and for me a snot nosed ten year old it was quite a thrill. After the war he was at LHS before Carleton and restarted our dormant baseball program(we have had a total of six head coaches in 70 years). At Kokomo he won the state once with Scott,Boushong,Eisert,Cox,Pryor,Hankins,Burt,"Goose"Ligon and Purdue player Ronnie Hughes.Ronnie was on a team with Phil Dawkins,Mel Garland,Bill Jones and next to Mount maybe our next best shooter Bob Purkhiser.

YOUNG AMERICA! I wonder how many on this list have heard of this place? I was there just a few weeks ago to a processing place. Any chance you might know of an Andy Fernung that used to coach in either Walton or Galveston many. many years ago? I think he had John and Ted's fathers in basketball or maybe baseball?

I've seen a lot of Purdue BB and Franklin another one with a "nose for the ball".

Joe was a starter as a senior along with Lamar Lundy and I think 3 first year players like Willie Merriweather,Bill Grieve and maybe Jake"The Rake" Eison.Harvey Austin,Bob Fehrman and Charlie Lyons also played.Ernie Hall had been our first African American and first Junior College transfer in 1952 then Lundy in 1953(played in 1954-No frosh players then) and Merriweather,Eison,Lyons and Chapman(who never made it to campus) in 1956.If in 55 we could have also signed Dick "The Skull" Barnett and in 1956 Oscar Robertson Ray Eddy would never have been fired.Any Indiana major college coach that could have had a feeder system from the Attucks,Gary Roosevelt and Evansville Lincoln plus throw in Chicago DuSable would have been a huge winner. From the Attucks alone there were Bob Jewell,Willie Gardner,Hallie Bryant,Bailey Robertson,Cleveland Harp,"Windy" McNeill,"Shad"Mitchell,Willie Merriweather,Bill Scott,Willie Hampton.Oscar Robertson,Bill Brown,Edgar Searcy,Al Maxey,Laverne Benson,Jerry Hazelwood,Larry McIntyre,Claude Williams,Bill Jones,Bobby Joe Edmonds, and Richard Ellis plus I no doubt have forgotten several. From 1951 thru 1961 they won three states and were in two others plus were screwed out of advancing in 1952&53 and were beaten by Milan in the semistate in 1954.

I didn't know the coach but for the late 40's or early 50's that was one tall team. Two Kitchels and Bone at about 6'5"-Bahler at 6'2" and Darland or Darling at 6'8" plus Hodson a small guard(Galveston).A hell of good Walton team of Jim Ward,Phil Marshall,a Ramer,Dee Long and Ted Beckley.Young America with the Beck brothers,Martin Logan,Cohee,Titus,Lytle and maybe Wendell Gish.Add several Washington Twp. teams-1st Strauch,Gene McNulty,Carl McNulty,Kenny Martin and Sholty. Then a team of Carl,Dave Schnieder, another Strauch,Masters,Cain and Buzz Davis. The last team from WT-Woolever,Jones,Rance,Sharp,Sprinkle,Laymon,another Sholty and my good buddie Harold"Bud" Baker. One of the Sholty brothers was one of the greatest Harness racing driver of all time. Cass County Sectional in my day-Galveston,Onward,Walton,Washington Twp.,Young America,New Waverly,Royal Center,Lucerne,Metea and Twelve Mile plus Logansport.Earlier there were teams at Lincoln,Deacon and Noble Twp.Now besides Logansport there are three other schools Lewis Cass,Pioneer, and Caston.Caston also Includes Fulton,Grass Creek and Kewanna of Fulton county plus Metea and Twelve Mile. There were grade schools at Hoover,Lewisburg,Adamsboro,Lake Cicotte,Clymers and maybe Georgetown plus at least 8 in Logansport not counting three Catholic(Grade,Jr. and High Schools).A total different world where you left your home to play ball, ride your bike, etc. after breakfast and never had to be home till dark and no one worried. We never locked our house, left the keys in the car, rode in the back of a truck, drank out of the hose and treated our elders with respect. There was no to very limited TV and our high school sporting events, plays, music event were all "sell outs" and almost every mother was active to some degree in the PTA.

I know of the small town life you speak and what happened to small towns through consolidations of schools. Definitely there were aspects on humanity that were not positive due to the "distance"...distance from "involvement". There was a lot lost. Others will claim that academic opportunities increased due to a larger school. I know a few years ago this was discussed as to the "optimum" consolidations in school size...but anything like that starts with metrics that may or may not be important or certainly debated as to the importance. I wonder if we will ever return to a more close knit school with distant learning through computers making headway? THAT might be the best consolidation...if it ever became really solid academically :)

I see some of the names you mention and wonder if I have ever had contact with some of their relatives. The Cohee I know came from Clinton County and there is a Gish that has been coaching Northwestern for a while. I know the wife of a Laymon and years ago there was a good ball player at Caston? that I thought was around 6'4" named Strauch..is that who you are mentioning? I lost a friend from work years ago...early 80s named Jerry Baker from Galveston...was he related to your friend Bud?

Jerry could be related to Bud but the Bakers were all from Washington Twp. just outside of Logansport and the closest little town was Anoka just off HY 35 between Logansport and Walton.Bud was a very good fast pitch softball pitcher and his older brother Carl(my old Sunday school teacher who was killed on D Day)was better.Bill and Dick were also good softball players and Dick played 5 or 2 had a baseball tryout with the Cubs.Dick played for the RBM and the Logansport Shamrocks. When ever they came to bat at home they played Clancy Lowered the Boom.I still remember the flip side "Who Threw the Overalls in Mrs. Murphy's Chowder"

To the question about rules affecting rebounding, don't forget they used to shoot on every foul. Common fouls were one shot until you got to the bonus to shoot 1-and-1. That created more rebounding opportunities.

That's interesting... didn't know that. Although they probably called fewer fouls back then?

So far biggie has 163 rebounds for a 12.5 average.

There are 20 games left, assuming only one game in each tournament. If he averages 10 rpg from here on out, that'd put his total at 363.

JBC has the record at 353. At this point I expect him to break it.
