Barry Odom contract details revealed

No no no, I was specifically told how Purdue spends money wasn't an issue.
Based on what was said at the press conference, Odom said the AD and Purdue leadership was aligned with him. Last time we had different leadership. This is the first time Bobinski has almost apologetically said they will spare no expense. The commitment to the full $20.5m, no handcuffing with assistant pools, payout of Walters buyout plus $3m for odoms buyout, and this contract are good starts.

Well I was being sarcastic as I've said all along the only path to success was a seriously increased monetary commitment to both coaches and players, which is clearly the plan this time around. It was not last time.

That will be tough depending on how much he has to spend to rebuild the roster.
Well, had IU not bellied up with NIL funds, I doubt Ciggy boy would have won as many this year as he did. If PU fails to pony up the money, it's going to be very tough on a newly rich coach because there's not a lot of players coming from UNLV.

Ponying up means me and you……not the next person. Not sure how I feel about this

Did IU belly up with NIL funds? Their recruiting classes (2024 and 2025) aren’t highly rated and most of their transfers followed their coach. Rourke was arguably their most impactful transfer and had offers from wake forest and byu.

The Walters hire was part that and part candidates knowing that Purdue wasn’t going to be offering big deals for players.
Was it though?

I think we could have had just about any G5 guy we wanted and the staff took a shot on the charismatic long shot guy and lost.

See how they do in the portal after a great season. If they get destroyed by ND that can bring them and possible transfers back to reality.

Did losing to a #16 seed bring our basketball recruiting ‘back to reality’?
“We’re good enough to get to the playoffs right now but you are the missing piece to give IU their first National Championship in football”…

So you’re aware that if someone didn’t get hurt in Brohm’s last year, he was about to get bought by a power program the same way Scourton did. If you know that, candidates know that. In the meantime everyone involved in Purdue was acting like it wasn’t real.

But if your desired outcome is for Bobinski and grimes to go for hiring Walters, I’d be fine with that. He was a disaster. People who make disastrous decisions get fired

I have no clue who you’re talking about.

you don’t know that a good player In Brohm’s final year had whispers about transferring out, but he got hurt before the season ended? He was going to be the first Scourton
No. And don’t care.

This is the new normal. Our best 2-5 players every year will likely disappear to be lured away by the highest bidder. Find me 10 programs where that’s not the case? It’s not some failing by Brohm, Walters or the AD. It’s a failing of the NCAA.

It’s up to the coaches to adjust.

Agreed. This is the hire that will define Mbobs legacy. He needs to make it work.

Odom is going to have to hit the portal hard and have the checkbook ready.
iu proved it can work.

Next move is to buy out the ND game next year. No sense in going up there and taking a 40 point beating for a new coach and program in a rebuild. Buy it out like iu did the Lville game this year. Replace with a home game against a winnable opponent.

You said we could have had any g5 guy we wanted. With knowledge that one of our best players was about to be bought? While the AD also tried to act like NIL wasn’t going to be a thing?

I disagree. But I do know we are on to better things than the train wreck Walters presided over when he wasn’t busy with other stuff

It was one player. It’s far worse now and we got a top G5. I do think the AD would have paid a better rate to a better coach but they liked Walters and paid “going rate” for a guy with his resume.

It was a Hail Mary lottery ticket/lightning in a bottle type hire but we moved on and made what I think is a good hire. Id give it a 7/10.

I don’t think the AD pretended that NIL didn’t exist but I think he was realistic…a program that had minimal success historically and a bad at best donor base isn’t going to keep up. At the time, people barely donated to the JPC…now you’re giving them another option, asking for more $ and you’re short on clarity as to where the money is going? In an NIL only world Purdue is always going to be behind.

Now revenue sharing is a different world and it will be interesting to see how Purdue handles it. It doesn’t solve the Ohio Sts of the world out spending everybody but it does put us in a spot where we immediately can offer more than most ACC and BIG12 school and more than any G5 out there. Would be a big boon in getting guys from the G5 who are good but not huge payday players. With that, I’m confident that with good coaching that 6-8 wins every year and mostly competitive football is not too much to ask.

Then, let OSU and others fight for the guys looking for big time paydays while we run a good developmental program where we have funds to keep our A- and B players around.
