In Australia, anyone who enters the country illegally is FOREVER banned from immigration into the country. Period. This includes those seeking asylum. Migrants who enter Australia illegally are sent to a refugee camp on Christmas Island where they are provided food, shelter and medical care. They are free to leave at any time but they cannot come to Australia under any circumstances.

This policy is highly effective. Prior to implementing it, Australia had over 16,000 illegal immigrants arriving every year by boat, mostly from Indonesia. Since the law was enacted, the number of illegal arrivals has dropped to fewer than one hundred per year.

At the same time, Australia is one of the most generous nations in the world for accepting immigrants. Legal immigrants, not illegals.

Like it. Trouble is we dont have spare islands.

Aussie's "generous" immigration policy plans for around ~ 160,000 a year in I believe.

Comparatively, the USA system allows over 1 million LEGAL immigrants in each year.

Biden will blow that number way up with the Afghanistan people he has flown in. Consequently the USA has by far the most generous legal system......

Unfortunately we also have by far and away the most generous illegal "system" too that will allow another 1 million plus in through the border this year.......at a time where unemployment is high and Covid Varriants walking in from the border are sure not needed.

Actually we do have a 'spare island' - Gitmo. There is plenty of space there for refugee camps and if they escape, they're in Cuba. Gitmo

We also have the Aleutian Islands, a chain of 14 large volcanic islands and 55 smaller islands off of the coast of Alaska. Several are uninhabited. Aleutian Islands
There is also Martha's vineyard. Maybe the Obama's won't mind taking in a few thousand for care and assistance.

From Wikipedia:

The U.S. currently administers three territories in the Caribbean Sea and eleven in the Pacific Ocean. Five territories (American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) are permanently inhabited, unincorporated territories; the other nine are small islands, atolls, and reefs with no native (or permanent) population. Of the nine, only one is classified as an incorporated territory (Palmyra Atoll). Two additional territories (Bajo Nuevo Bank and Serranilla Bank) are claimed by the United States but administered by Colombia.
