Any idea who Coach Painter is talking about?

That comment is not even relevant, as we had no room to go to the portal.....so CMP is just yapping.

Now if he doesn't go into the portal next year......as both things can be true. CMP frosh (& Furst) are developing, but one can also get an impact guy (with the right attitude) out of the portal.

Jones was a transfer last year, does Painter think he didn't help? I don't think so. If he'd been in the portal would Painter have not taken him? I don't think so.

Like you said, there is was no space so no, no one here was calling for a portal player. People here DO think Painter should not absolutely reject the portal as option.

At least 50% of the folks on this and every other Purdue site.
Who was calling for portal use before the season? I certainly wasn't. For the simple fact that the rules hadn't changed yet and we were full which everyone knew.

The 15 scholarship limit had to apply for this year tho, correct? If I'm adding up rt in my head, we are at 13 and Catchings would've been 14 as was the discussion last spring and summer. Sooo, not sure that we didn't have a spot and certainly did after Catchings took off, albeit very late in the process at that time.

Sounds like you took the long way around to say we are 100% in agreement. 😎

And 10 for Wol. :p
It wasn’t me! Quit with the name calling, bullying and misinformation and lies! Just ask Duane!

Show me one post I authored this year stating that Painter should have recruited someone this year from the portal. And while you’re at it, name the player from the portal that I suggested painter recruit.

And after that, I demand an apology. And get off my back!

Easy. It was a joke about Painter blowing off steam throwing darts at our usernames from ALL of OUR expert comments over the years.

He has had transfers the last few teams and so I have no reason to think he rejects the portal. We just know that is not his favorite mode of operation. The transfers have been guards. Jon Octeus (sp?), Sterling Carter, David Jenkins and Lance.

Octeus and Jones were good additions. Carter was meh. Jenkins was meh+. But that was pretty portal and open transfer rules for the most part. The talent level then was thinner. It's a lot easier to get a talented player to transfer now. I don't believe that every last one of them can't possibly fit here or help this team. We have great younger players but none of them are SO amazing that we can't possibly add in another player

The next two seasons are going to be critical. Next year three senior starters with a real chance at a run with just a little additional help. The year after, we lose three senior starters and might need a bridge player while the remaining players level up. It's a thin line between continual top 10 excellence and not, so yeah I think just relying on recruits and nothing else in the age of NIL is unnecessarily walking a tight rope.

Sterling had a great game against IU and so he made his mark 😊

I think the hard thing to accept is the fact that loyalty isn’t there anymore because of the NIL and transfer rules. And it’s ok. I for one have/had a hard time with that. If you want to win NOW it seems the best way to do it, is to bring i portal guys that can play. I was against it at first, but I’m with you now. If we can get guys who are better than players we have now, do it. I don’t think it’s paints way, but I think it’s potentially the best strategy for next year, unless obviously the freshman are actually really good.

What misinformation/lies did I tell wole? All I did was quote you over and over. Are you saying you lie and spread misinformation?

Yep. We were oversigned and needed to do something if Catchings didn't bail.
All they needed to do was ask Waddell to go to walk on status and cover the difference in NIL. MP and staff could have added a transfer had they wanted to. They opted to roll with the five freshmen and banking on development of Cam and Myles, in part because part of the goal of this year’s squad is development.

As many have stated, next year is all in. A lot of season left to go and the needs for next year might leave ok significantly different in March than they do today, but I agree with the general consensus that MP and staff need to 1) keep their key guys for next season and 2) go to the portal to get any piece of pieces needed to compete for a NC.

Less about loyalty, IMO, than recruiting guys who want to work and develop and then developing them. As you said, I don’t think that’s mutually exclusive to selectively playing in the portal.

I do think it keeps MP from living in the portal but with Braden, Trey and Fletch all in their last year next season you’d hope that the rest of the team would be in favor of going out and getting any piece that can help make a deep March run.

I'm not anti loyalty. I don't think you have to go to either extreme to be successful or "moral."

You can do both primarily recruit your guys AND pick up key players along the way that can help you. You aren't going to bat 1000 in recruiting anymore than you are in the portal. The portal simply provides you a mulligan chance. The same character analysis you do with a recruit you can do somewhat with a portal potential player and neither analysis will be foolproof.
