alumni game/team scrimmage

Sec 4 brown shorts, black purdue shirt if anyone is close enough to say hello

For fellow out-of-towners, @BoilerBall tweeted a link to watch the alumni game on BTN2Go: Alumni Game

The tweet said alumni game ONLY, so it doesn't sound like the scrimmage will be streamed.

I'm on the BTN2Go site now, but I'm not seeing anything playing. I'm sure it's something on my end, not to tech savy.

They just tweeted they are aware of the streaming issues. It sounds like it was more wishful thinking on their part than anything else as they've indicated they don't even have a hard line internet connection.

Thanks for the update...guess it wasn't on my end.

dialed up the stream - says it will begin soon... or is it confirmed canceled due to the technical issues?

For having to drop a ton of weight this summer, Basil looks very good. Improved jump shot to go with his good athleticism. Hopefully he can give the team some outside shooting threats to open the lane for himself and the big guys. Having he and Vincent on the floor at the same time would really put teams in a bind on the defensive side of the ball.

Spike appears to have the ability to take the ball in to the lane when needed and make a play. That is something that Purdue hasn't had in a number of years.

Going to be hard to keep Carsen Edwards off the floor this year. I know he projects as an off guard in his first year and that potentially pushes guys like Mathias and Cline to the bench, but he addition of Albrecht and Carsen have solidified the guard position this year. Carsen plays very aggressive defense and has a confidence in his jump shot.

So much talk about Spike and Carsen Edwards, it feels a little bit like people are overlooking PJ. I thought he was really good last year. 4-1 assist to turnover ratio from a point guard is phenomenal and he's just solid. It will be interesting to see how the PG position unfolds cause no way does coach Painter play all 3 at the point

Good to hear that spike appears to be going 100%

Agree on pjt. He achieved his great stat while still logging 5th most minutes per game.

Imagine the lineup will look a bit different from beginning to the end of the season.
And that we can be the ones to force opponents to our lineup rather the reverse

For those in attendance, how was fan turnout? Were there many recruits there?

I would say about 2-3k at the most...wasn't really pushed as hard as in years past for promotions. I would venture that Robert Phinisee was there since he is local but not sure about any others

I thought PJ, Basil, Haas, Mathias, Cline, Swanigan, Smile and both Edwards looked good, even though C Edwards didn't shoot well, Taylor did OK, guarding Haas is very physical intimidating, and Taylor did OK inside with the ball, he will get better I feel, about all I can say until they play another team

When I say looked good I am basically saying about what we expected, I should say Basil looked better than expected

If Basil has improved his shooting and his fundamentals, I really like his upside.

The three players that are hardest to gauge right now are probably the best athletes on the team: Smotherman, Carson Edwards, and Taylor. I am really looking forward to seeing what each of them can contribute this season.

Remember with Taylor, he is going against two guys who could very easily be first team all conference next season in Haas and Swanigan..those two would also likely start on most top 25 teams next season as well. I think Taylor will be fine when he isn't going against guys like that...I think that showed against Rutgers last year. Taylor's biggest positive is that he has been playing against three NBA big men for 2-3 years now AND his lower leg/foot injury seems a thing of the past. I think he will surprise when he isn't having to guard and play against his own teammates.

Sorry, I didn't get on here until now, so I didn't see this message. I prefer using my PC over my phone to log onto here. I'm old-fashioned in that regard. I was sitting on the opposite side of the media, near the top of the lower-level of bleachers, parallel to mid-court. I was the one (I didn't really hear anyone else during FT's) yelling/encouraging players before they shot their freebies & during a few other moments. I had on (of note) a black bandana and a backpack. Outside of family, I was sitting next to 40-something y.o. named Bill that had his two daughters with him. We chatted briefly, with it mostly being me answering his daughters' questions about which player was which. I'm not sure if he would be someone that would have an account on here.

Wow...Swanigan looks slim. I would guess he has lost another 15-20 pounds.

Vince Edwards as well. I stood right next to him after the scrimmage. NBA Scouts must have told him he will have to be a 2 (or maybe still a 3) to play in the league. I got a photo with P.J. Thompson as well. We're the same height: I'm gonna have to start listing him at 5'10 again, haha.

Give a good recap for those of us not able to attend
Good thing is that there will be AC unlike Mackey!

VE would be my MVP of the scrimmage. Thompson shot very well, Haas made all his FT's and scored easily when he got deep enough position. He tweaked his ankle or his foot. The floor was continuously slippery under one of the baskets. Hopefully, he's okay. Smotherman did well and was able to hit a couple threes and get a lot of easy baskets off the dribble. He still needs to learn to pass the ball when going coast-to-coast on a 3-on-1 break. On that play, he would have been called for a charge in an actual game. He looked good overall, though. If he keeps making his jumpers and improves his passing, he will be that much more valuable on offense.

Cline really struggled shooting. It looked like he was trying to prove that there's more to his offensive game than being a catch-and-shoot guy, but he ended up forcing too many contested shots off the dribble as a result. Swanigan was okay. He still was shooting (and missing) too many 3PT's. CE, Albrecht, Mathias, and Taylor played about as well as I expected, except Mathias could have made more plays and shots. Taylor will play more. If nothing else, it's because he's the only other true big besides Haas and Swanigan. Hopefully, it will instead be because he's improved.

I basically wanted to see Carsen, Spike and Taylor…and a little of Basil. Basil hit his first two 3’s and then missed a couple. Basil started out last year (before the redshirt?) or the year before hitting some perimeter shots and then faded. It was the year that he worked out with Baumgartner’s or their approach. It was the year that all the players started to hold their follow through longer…maybe two years ago? I don’t know if his perimeter game will allow some playing at the 3 or still play a 4. I do think Basil will be more effective when there is essentially one post presence as his ability to drive might somewhat allow a better perimeter look. He will see more time and not sure if he competes with Taylor for time or not?

I think Taylors biggest obstacle is his mind or confidence. Whether he is unsure due to some rust from not playing much the last few years or going against AJ, Haas or Biggie he doesn’t appear to have the confidence he needs and THAT comes from success. He put some shots up in the lane that he appeared to be unsure and appeared to be ready to rebound his shots rather than just making them. He also cannot stare down the low post as he lost a couple passes doing that. Purdue could use a good JT right now as he offers some things the others don’t. There very easily could be a time that a good JT and Biggie working together as two 4’s could go to quick posts, interchange and face ups depending on who was guarding them? They would open the court and allow drives and still bring size to pound the ball when the perimeter is cold. I hope he gets some good playing time before the Big as I think he needs to make his mistakes, learn from them and see success as THAT would pay dividends down the road.

Anyone that has followed Biggie’s comments on players and coaches might remember his talking about Spike having an old man’s game. I think Biggie’s assessment is very accurate, Spike is not going to blow anyone away with blazing speed or athleticism. Course neither did Roosevelt Jones for Butler. Two different players and two different styles, but both crafty and with old man’s games. The game is physical, mental and skillful. If you are not blessed physically, you better have the mental and skill…not to detract from skill in an athlete either. Spike will give the team a constant threat on the perimeter, hit FT’s when the game is on the line and be a little crafty…somewhat like Carson Cunningham could at time. He will make plays through finesse, not athleticism. He will see minutes and will help Purdue.

Carsen brings something the other guards don’t…an inch or two in height and more athleticism. He is quicker and a better athlete than PJ and Spike. He can get his shot anytime he wants and is crafty as well, but it is more physical than mental understanding of the game. He is a freshman and took shots he shouldn’t because he has other good players around him and he is not in high school anymore. His upside is pretty high though and I’m happy he chose to be a Boiler. Once his understanding of Big time basketball kicks in, he can be a very good player. A heady Carsen and I don’t see any type of press being an issue, which I think should be less of an issue if any issue with this team. Carsen made a great in the lane pass for an assist and as he gets more comfortable he will pick his shots better. When you are a go to player in high school and not that player in college there will be some learning.

I never talked D, but Basil, JT and Carsen bring more athleticism to help the D. I think Purdue will score and hopefully can contain the dribble. Purdue contains the dribble well and Purdue has the ability with a few other tweaks to be pretty good. Wasn’t the final ranking last year 12? It will be a different style of play, but retain an inside presence definitely with Haas and even without Haas. Purdue will play inside out, but should be improved in the perimeter and ability to drive the ball. Should be a good year as Purdue can beat anyone and just needs to prove it.

Thanks for the thoughts and observations.....much appreciated from one who can only be there in the spirit of the Old Gold and Black.

It appears "Phat" Basil is working to be a key contributor......looking forward to seeing him in games again.
