Carsen Edwards really likes to shoot.
I believe he averaged nearly 30 PPG this past season, so that's not surprising. He knows how to drive-and-dish or kick-out. I'm sure he'll better learn when to pass, dribble, and shoot this season.

Yea, I know what you mean about playing another team. We used to laugh at an IU buddy who would talk about how Tom Guier couldn't be stopped in the Cream and Crimmson scrimmage.I thought PJ, Basil, Haas, Mathias, Cline, Swanigan, Smile and both Edwards looked good, even though C Edwards didn't shoot well, Taylor did OK, guarding Haas is very physical intimidating, and Taylor did OK inside with the ball, he will get better I feel, about all I can say until they play another team
Any former Purdue players we can compare him to?I believe he averaged nearly 30 PPG this past season, so that's not surprising. He knows how to drive-and-dish or kick-out. I'm sure he'll better learn when to pass, dribble, and shoot this season.

No problem there. He will need to adjust and use his good teammates more now is allI hope he doesn't have a lot of "sauce" since he likes to shoot a bunch.
Really? If he has Willie Deane quickness with the ball, that's huge.Willie Deane would be somewhat comparable

I basically wanted to see Carsen, Spike and Taylor…and a little of Basil. Basil hit his first two 3’s and then missed a couple. Basil started out last year (before the redshirt?) or the year before hitting some perimeter shots and then faded. It was the year that he worked out with Baumgartner’s or their approach. It was the year that all the players started to hold their follow through longer…maybe two years ago? I don’t know if his perimeter game will allow some playing at the 3 or still play a 4. I do think Basil will be more effective when there is essentially one post presence as his ability to drive might somewhat allow a better perimeter look. He will see more time and not sure if he competes with Taylor for time or not?
I think Taylors biggest obstacle is his mind or confidence. Whether he is unsure due to some rust from not playing much the last few years or going against AJ, Haas or Biggie he doesn’t appear to have the confidence he needs and THAT comes from success. He put some shots up in the lane that he appeared to be unsure and appeared to be ready to rebound his shots rather than just making them. He also cannot stare down the low post as he lost a couple passes doing that. Purdue could use a good JT right now as he offers some things the others don’t. There very easily could be a time that a good JT and Biggie working together as two 4’s could go to quick posts, interchange and face ups depending on who was guarding them? They would open the court and allow drives and still bring size to pound the ball when the perimeter is cold. I hope he gets some good playing time before the Big as I think he needs to make his mistakes, learn from them and see success as THAT would pay dividends down the road.
Anyone that has followed Biggie’s comments on players and coaches might remember his talking about Spike having an old man’s game. I think Biggie’s assessment is very accurate, Spike is not going to blow anyone away with blazing speed or athleticism. Course neither did Roosevelt Jones for Butler. Two different players and two different styles, but both crafty and with old man’s games. The game is physical, mental and skillful. If you are not blessed physically, you better have the mental and skill…not to detract from skill in an athlete either. Spike will give the team a constant threat on the perimeter, hit FT’s when the game is on the line and be a little crafty…somewhat like Carson Cunningham could at time. He will make plays through finesse, not athleticism. He will see minutes and will help Purdue.
Carsen brings something the other guards don’t…an inch or two in height and more athleticism. He is quicker and a better athlete than PJ and Spike. He can get his shot anytime he wants and is crafty as well, but it is more physical than mental understanding of the game. He is a freshman and took shots he shouldn’t because he has other good players around him and he is not in high school anymore. His upside is pretty high though and I’m happy he chose to be a Boiler. Once his understanding of Big time basketball kicks in, he can be a very good player. A heady Carsen and I don’t see any type of press being an issue, which I think should be less of an issue if any issue with this team. Carsen made a great in the lane pass for an assist and as he gets more comfortable he will pick his shots better. When you are a go to player in high school and not that player in college there will be some learning.
I never talked D, but Basil, JT and Carsen bring more athleticism to help the D. I think Purdue will score and hopefully can contain the dribble. Purdue contains the dribble well and Purdue has the ability with a few other tweaks to be pretty good. Wasn’t the final ranking last year 12? It will be a different style of play, but retain an inside presence definitely with Haas and even without Haas. Purdue will play inside out, but should be improved in the perimeter and ability to drive the ball. Should be a good year as Purdue can beat anyone and just needs to prove it.
From what I've seen, Deane quickness mixed with Bryson's body and can shoot the three. He should be good after he learns how to play in college. Gotta remember that Deane played a year, then transferred to Purdue. He had a lot of experience before playing his first game as a Boiler.
