6.5 min of scrimmage yesterday…

To me, it's an indication of just how good Harris is.

Any time a frosh can move past an experienced player....he's a great one. Likely an all B10 Frosh. But we are talking about 2 phenomenal experienced shooters here. So it's a major, major leap.

Will Harris make that leap sometime this season? We will see. Kinda makes watching an already great team, even more fun....huh?

Casey, dub?? Any insight? The sleepers guys said that they really find it hard to believe. Carter says he thinks Colvin will start and most likely DJ. They both said if Gicarri starts it’s a bad sign for Purdue in that Colvin and Heide didn’t make a big jump and aren’t as good as expected!

Sleepers aren’t too smart. If Harris starts over Colvin it’s because Painter wants a second ball handler on the floor with Smith. That’s not Colvin or Heide’s game.

Not sure what has happened to Furst. He started his Fr year and looked like 6'10 match up nightmare. Ran the floor, hit 3's, etc. Granted, his playing time has been significantly cut, but seem like Painter has lost trust in him.
Coach Painter has stated that after the loss to FDU he decided that he needed more skill around Edey and that a couple of guys (Furst and Morton) had to give up minutes for the team. TKR and Gillis gave Purdue a better chance to win than Furst did, but with Edey and Gillis gone, there are minutes available for Furst to compete for.

The start of the video had the black team as Beard, Fletch, Harris, TKR and Berg so seems like that line up is at least being tested.

Assuming video was correct to time, appearred that the grey shirts were giving it to the black shirts at the start then CJ started turning the ball over and Braden hit shots to bring the black shirts back. I know I am reading way too much into video haha just pumped for season!

Didn't have a chance to see the clips but a couple people said Berg looked slow? That's sort of surprising b/c I always thought he looked good athletically for a 7 footer.
Did he get any pick n pop opportunities or was he just playing down on the low post?
Last year I thought he looked slowish, he has skills but that was my worry with him.

When I've watched him, I've thought he looked quicker than most 7 footers, or at least as coordinated. Granted, that's all relative, but I thought he was comparable to Edey, maybe not as quick at Haarms, definitely more speed and agility than Haas.

I agree. He seems to be a bit stiff and maybe not as quick laterally but probably comparable to Edey. Last year, I felt like some of the stiffness appeared to be more so that he didn't really seem comfortable and get enough time to really settle into the game. Hopefully, that has improved this yr.

Sleepers said Brian predicted Gicarri and Berg in starting 5 with Braden, Fletch and TKR.
Not surprised. Berg hasn't played much in games, but when he did, he impressed me with his mobility. Things may change as the freshman bigs get acclimated, but I think Berg will give teams trouble at both ends.

If only he'd played hockey in high school.

Agreed. I think the more actual game time he gets, the game will slow down for him. Last year, I'm sure he was pressing to impress Painter during garbage time. But this year, he should see actual game minutes, get into the flow, get an easy bucket and find some rhythm.

In a “no way overreaction”…

The Beard looks different (in a good way)—-hunting his shot and aggressive.

DJ - if he can hit that mid range off the PnR and hit the sky hook in the lane, he’s gonna be tough for the other team

Loyer - finishing at the rim and being automatic from 3

Colvin - at the 3:50 mark decides to dunk on everyone and gets fouled. He was automatic from the corner 3s he took.

Heide - need more highlights from him but expecting him to be our main defensive guy on athletic wings/stretch 4s.

Harris - looked like he was handling the rock a lot and looked good

Cox - got himself in a bit of trouble which he will learn from but that middy is 💯

TKR - not too many highlights here but looks to be his solid self and I think will surprise the rest of the country

Berg - looked good. A bit slow. But hopefully can pick it up

Burgess - man I wish we had mins for him this year and maybe he will play over furst or berg. He’s going to be good.

What’d I miss?!?
Furst.... I do want to think he got better, but this isn't a year to just be "ok" .

I know that vid is a heavily edited social/hype clip, but out the gate I really like the ball movement. Clearly, this has been emphasized by CMP that for this team to be successful, the ball needs to be flying around like a hot potato unlike last year when we could just dump it down low and generally watch Edey eat.

I watched this several times. A few takeaways:

Love all the passing. We have a lot of good shooters, high IQ players, and good passers. I think that will be a much bigger part of our offense this year, perimeter passing.

Braden is freakin good. Anyone who says he’s going to lose a step without Edey doesn’t know basketball. He can play!

I thought Furst looked really good. Hustle, great screens, good defense.

I liked Harris physicality and he has a good looking shot.

TKR, Heide, Colvin, and Fletch all looked like their usual self, nothing jumped out at me as they will make a big leap except TKR did really good cleaning up around the rim and without Edey I think he will score a lot of put backs.

Cox flashed potential but had 3+ turnovers from steals, and they didn’t show any turnovers from just bad plays. He was able to create his own shot and shoot but not sure he will be a plug and play in Matt’s system.

I was a bit disappointed in Jacobsen. I thought he was good but people here talk like he will be starting early on. He has a lot to learn, he was out of position a lot and seemed, well, soft. I thought berg played more physical, was in better position, and seemed to play more disciplined basketball even if Jacobsen looked more talented. All of this really should be expected of a true fresh especially going into a big ten program, and reality set in.

I’m no coach, but based on what I saw I actually wouldn’t mind a lineup of TKR at 5 and Furst at the 4. Nothing against Berg, I just liked what I saw out of Caleb. And nothing against Heide and Colvin, I just feel like Harris has the energy and the full package.

If this is the case, I predict Daniel takes Berg's spot at some point in the season. I think he has more weapons to his game.
There’s been a lot of speculation on that but based on the video I thnk he’s got a lot to learn on defense. If he can let the game slow down, be more physical, and understand his defensive positioning better he will be very good. He just doesn’t have the quickness to overcompensate for not being in position. But he had good movement and his shooting looked great. In an offense with a lot of movement I can see him thriving if he can improve his screening so I do think with Time we can build an offense around him.

As we have seen in the past, offense alone won't give you playing time in Painter's system. If he is behind on defense, it may be awhile before he sees significant time on the floor because Painter can bring him along slowly. Purdue has the luxury of being deep up front, so they aren't in a position where they have to force anything. Just be ready by the 2nd half of the B1G season.
