2025 Transfer portal thread

If Omer Mayer is a done deal, this would implicate a few things:

1) we most likely lose Gicarri Harris. He was rumored to go anyways and with someone else ahead of him, he’s likely elsewhere

2) we have our secondary ball handler and sharp shooter, and most likely Smith’s replacement at PG for 2026-2027. If Harris could be convinced to stick. We would have a Mayer/Cox/Harris backcourt for 2026

3) this would be Matt Painters best assembled team at Purdue

1) Smith
2) Mayer
3) Loyer
4) TKR
5) Cluff / Jacobsen

Bench:
1) Cluff / Jacobsen
2) Cox
3) Burgess
4) Benter
5) West
6) Harris (unlikely to stay)

And I’m sure we add something else portal wise. Not sure how I would even approach the portal with this add.

4) we should be the undisputed pre season #1 and Big Ten favorite.

All looks good except the Harris stuff. Says he is staying & he will get lots of minutes.

Yes. Painter always leans on experienced guys over new ones unless they are phenomenal talent. Mayer might be but until he is in practice - we have no clue. I think based on both he and Harris’ size, they can in theory play 1-3.

One thing I hope for 25/26 season - Smith’s minutes come down to 30 minutes v 38/39 range. Save that dudes legs.

How do we know Mayer is ahead of Cox and Harris?

Not sure why you have Harris as bottom of the bench. We have no idea if Mayer is good enough to immediately start. Your pecking order is specious.
Or even how many mins he’d get. Harris should be 15 at least and I assume it’s close to the 20-25 range

We all know Braden is playin 35+ unless it’s a blowout lolol

I know anything can happen and portal is still open. But heard gicarri is staying and if not, he’d be a bit behind in the portal if he declared now. But of course, he always could. Paint typically tries to help his guys out and wants them to get out in the portal as soon as possible to get the best deal/situation for themselves.

Painter has always tried to give his players a shot of getting individual awards. He allowed Swanigan to play many more minutes in games to keep his streak of double/doubles alive. If Smith wants to play 35-40 minutes a game in an effort to gain player of the year, Painter will allow it.

My hope is Smith reduces his workload to 30 minutes and our bench players receive more time. I’ve heard awesome things about Benter and West. And Cox beat out Harris and Myles.

If we add Mayer, much like I said before, whoever loses it is not going to stay and cheer with a towel from the bench and be satisfied with playing 5-10 mins. It’s not about the money. None of these great players that came to Purdue came here to be bench warmers. Just like Hunter, IT, Newman Stephens, Wadell, Myles and Heide, who ever loses out will leave for a chance to play.

The bench numbering was kinda random. I put Harris at the bottom because I expect to lose him.

Mayer is the real deal, I don’t see him leaving the euro league to come here and sit the bench. The allure of playing with Braden, then taking over for him.

Hard to know for sure, but if he’s not, I doubt we get him. And he is as polished of an international prospect as you can get. I don’t think he leaves Israel to get 5-10 mins a game for us. And I don’t know Harris stays for 5-10 either. But he could, if he’s patient enough to take over the next year.

He’s already behind smith, Loyer and Cox. Benter and West join this year. Adding another stud guard would lessen his already not starter minutes. I mean, with Braden and Fletch gone next year, maybe he’s patient. But I could see him leaving if we get another stud guard

Honestly in the world we live in right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone commits to a school, doesn’t get to play, goes to a lower school to actually play, then comes back when a spot is open. I’m not sure Painter would encourage him to play elsewhere and leave the door open, but there is a world where the mid majors start becoming AAA clubs for the high majors in the not to distant future

I fully believe we have a lot of folks on here possibly underestimating Harris and Cox as far as contributions and talent as ball handlers and the ability to spell Braden for a few minutes a game
For me, it’s not a lack of confidence in Harris or Cox. It’s utterly impressed by Mayers game. I think he starts on this team next year

And with Braden, Fletcher, and TKR being Seniors, this is a year to go all in on a title, even if that means we lose some underclassmen.

IF we get a stud guard. Welcomed.....as Harris is pretty good. Always great IF a better teammate comes along. TEAM MATE being the opporative word

Mayer literally said he wanted a coach who said he could come and compete not guarantee a starting spot.

Missed that interview. Either way, I don’t see us getting him and him not getting major minutes next year. And I’m not suggesting he Painter guaranteed a starting spot. I think he has the confidence to beat out Harris and Cox though

I know to an extent, but what I’m saying is, you get a high schooler to commit. He comes in, learns the system, works out, get a little PT. If by year 2 they don’t have a path to major minutes, they can go start at a lower school, and then you welcome them back you graduate who was blocking them. That becomes a very real possibility. If Harris left for 2025-2026 and came back 2026-2027, he’d get minutes and we’d have him when we need him. Could be best of both worlds, IF painter would be open to it

Oh, that's what you meant. No, I don't see that on any kind of decent scale.

How will Mayer know before he competes against them in Painter's system? You are making him sound like Catchings.

My opinion of the situation doesn’t make him sound like anything. I’m not claiming to know his mind. But he’s on a Euroleague team, which is a very competitive league. He’s on a team with Trevion Williams along with other very solid former college players in the league that are 24-25 years old now. And he looks like a phenom. I would be confident if I was him, this isn’t a knock on Cox or Harris. I like both. But I think this kid is on another level.

If this were true, smith would have had 3 triple doubles last year.

OK. But when you state that if he isn't ahead of Harris, he won't come to Purdue,it sounds like you knew what he was thinking.

My personal opinion is, if a player of his caliber is going to leave the EuroLeague and go to school in the USA, and is from Israel, that he’s not going to chose Purdue if he or Painter thinks he’ll be behind Harris on the depth chart next year. He could be a featured player at Auburn who is also interested.

I think the allure of coming here would be, playing with Smith for a year, being on the best team in the country, and then take over for Smith the next year. He could have his choice of most schools at this point. We have a unique selling point for his skill set right now.

I think one thing we are all forgetting is defense. Harris and Cox will get minutes due to ability to pick ball up full court. Harris could also get assignment of other teams best guy.

Painter likes to play 3 gaurds. That is 5 guys for 120 mins. I think one of Cox or Harris need to be on court at all time for defensive reasons. Do not know how good Mayer is on D, but if he eats into anyone's minutes it might be Loyer?

Mayer is a stud guard in my opinion. Harris is good, but worth the risk of losing going all in with a potential difference maker to a title team

All for whatever CMP wants, he certainly knows what he's doing. Be happy to have a new stud on the roster. Very happy. Videos look great, but that's all offense. But let's see if he can play B10 D before we anoint him a starter. Might be, but let's have patience and see?

If he can really run the team well it might make sense for him to give Braden a couple minute break each half. Not that Braden can’t handle 40, but it might help him at the end of the game to get a little breather along the way, especially if Purdue is facing a high pressure defense such as Auburn or even Penn State.

That said, Braden played brilliantly in the second half against Houston, so I would not consider this a must.

Don’t really think he’d be featured for Auburn..ESPECIALLY if pettiford doesn’t stay in the draft. They also have two combo guards coming in as part of their Frosh class.

With 10 seniors (CBM is coming back as a 26 year old), they have a lot of work to do to get a team together. So he could go there and get PT, but has Pearl really even developed a PG in the last few years? So with that, Auburn, at this point, doesn’t look like they’ll be anywhere close to as good as they were last year.
