I have some time on my hands and have been thinking in a lot of detail about this class and wanted to put some thoughts on paper so to speak. We've had some really good momentum in recruiting over the past week. It's great to see as we've been sorely missing it for a long time. But a good hire seems to have done what we needed it to so far with hopefully more to come. Below I wanted to breakdown what we are getting and what needs we may still have. I also discuss how it meshes with current players on the roster.

QB Nick Sipe
QB Griffin Alstott
QB Cam Northern (walk-on)
In general, both scholarship QB's are rated as 3 star guys with Sipe typically getting the higher rating, although ESPN favors Alstott. With these two we have good size and athleticism. With the offensive coaches we have these guys should be well developed. They join a good stable of returners with Blough (JR), Sindelar (SO) and Sparks (rFR), plus 2 walk-on guys. You never know how guys will turn out but you have to like what we will have here. Being from southern Indiana and having seen Northern play, he is a good prospect as a walk-on and is a nice get.

RB - no current commits
This may be one position where a commitment for the 17 cycle isn't necessary. We return a large stable of capable backs in Jones (JR), Lankford-Johnson (SO), Knox (SR), Worship (SO), Fuller (SO), Yancey (SR), Green (SR) and Wegher (SO). Ideally Wegher could redshirt with a healthy Knox back. With some updates - we do have some offers out. It doesn't mean we'll end up with a RB but it is possible.

WR Brevin Harris
WR CJ Hayes
WR Tyler Hamilton
WR LaPerion Perry
WR D'Jaundrae Edwards
This position is probably one of the most important since we lose 4 of our top receivers from last season. You have to like the size of Edwards, Harris and Hayes. I think one or all of these guys could play right away. Hamilton is a speedster for the slot and him being on campus in the spring could land him time right away. Perry is small and is listed as an ATH but was projected to be a WR/KR type of guy. I'd imagine he gets the redshirt. These guys will compete with little returning experience, with Mahoungou and Phillips (SRs) being the most seasoned. Landers (SO) and Anthrop (rFR) will likely see more action along with Burgess (JR). Kimbrough (SR) and Franklin (rFR) may also factor. This group is wide open and we will need lots of new faces to emerge. With Edwards in the fold, we have 5 WR commits or possibly 6 if they decide Pittman is a WR. It is not likely we get someone else here unless they visit the JUCO market here. However, with little returning experience and a premium put on good WR, you can't rule out anything. Do we hang on to Perry? Although small, he does field offers from NC State and Cincinnati, so that is some good competition.

TE Darius Pittman
Although he is listed as a WR by Rivals, hopefully this guy projects at TE. If not, this is a position I think we need to nab at least one of. He has good size and a good frame so he would likely put on weight easily. You have to like the returning guys in Herdman (JR) and Hopkins (SO) and figure they will be in for a big role, especially with the inexperience at WR. Hopefully Trussell (SO) progresses as well.

OL Jalen Jackson
OL Ethan Smart
OL Mark Stickford
This is the most important position we are recruiting as evidenced by Brohm's emphasis on it. Having Jackson and Smart in for the spring will be huge and both could see early playing time as a result. With the decommit of Hudson, we are now only at 3 commits here. Don't be surprised if we end up with 1 or 2 more guys, especially from the JUCO market. The only entrenched returner is Barron at center. Other than that, it will likely be wide open. Mendez (SO) and McCann (SO) saw a lot of time at T so they will likely have a leg up. Perhaps someone out of the inexperienced group of returners of Hermanns (rFR), Yacoobi (JR), Truitt (SO), Swingler (JR), Daniels (SR), Neal (SR) and Hawthorne (rFR) will step up. I make the assumption Patterson will not return after his legal issues. There are also 5! walk-on redshirt freshmen linemen. The development of this group will ultimately determine the kind of year we are able to have next season.

DE Kai Higgins
DE Giovanni Hightower
Updated after Hightower commit. Higgins is a good looking prospect and will have 3 years of eligibility so that is a plus for a JC guy. Hightower looks like a good replacement for Mason and looks to have a larger frame so could put on more strength/weight. I'd imagine Hightower would redshirt, but you just never know. We do have returning experience in Robinson (SR) and Miles (SR) as well as some depth with Simmons (JR), Faison (SO), Turner (SO), and Larkin (SR). Perhaps someone cracks this lineup, but it seems as if there won't be as much change here.

DT Malcolm Robinson
DT Dante Johnson
Updated after Johnson commit. Robinson looks to be a good pickup. We are very thin at this spot, and it is something that must be addressed down the stretch in recruiting. Picking up Dante Johnson is nice, but his size at just 250 seems awfully small for someone to contribute right away. I'm not saying he can't, but it is likely he will need a redshirt year to put on some size and strength. Neal (SO) is the only guy who returns with much experience, and the rest of the group includes Brown (SO), Criddle (SO), Jones (JR), Colmery (JR) and Watts (rFR).

LB - no current commits
I do find it a bit concerning to not have a LB commit yet in this process. I think this is an area of need. I think we return a talented and capable group with Bentley (SR), Bailey (SO) and Ezechukwu (SR). There is some depth with Dawson (SO), Hudson (SR), Polk-Campbell (SR) and Fakasiieiki (rFR). But the fact that there are 4 seniors in a group of 8 guys signals the need to build some depth for down the road here. Perhaps they intend for Higgins to be an OLB type of guy, but he is a JC guy. It'd be nice to add at least one freshman.

DB Dedrick Mackey
DB TJ Jallow
DB Jacob Abrams
Mackey and Jallow look like pretty good prospects. Jallow especially could contribute early. He is a 3 star guy by most accords but ESPN rates him as a top 50 guy and a 4-star. Abrams isn't rated, but I like it because of his size and because it sent a message that we are going to recruit the big Indiana schools from Coach Brohm. We lost Marcus Jones to decommit, but he was a fast-rising prospect that would be okay to get back. Upgrading the secondary is definitely a place of need, but we do return nearly the entire secondary from a starting perspective but opportunity to play is there in the depth chart. At safety we return Mosley (SO) and Parker (SR) who were starters much of the year. Behind them though is little experience and only one scholarship player - Chelf (SO) to go along with 4 walk-ons. At corner, we played a lot of guys last year and return likely starters in Hunte (SR) and Cason (JR), though this is likely not set. There is a lot of depth from Roberts (JR), Shuman (SO), Hayes (SO) and Hardy (SR) as well as Little (SO) and Smiley (rFR).

K/P
We have no current commits and I would not expect that to change this year. We return Dillinger (SO) at Kicker and he was solid and return Schopper (JR) at punter who was very good. I imagine we try to bring in 1-2 in the '18 class.

EDIT: See post 31 for the scholarship breakdown. With other recent news, it appears as though we will have around 5 scholarships still available. It is likely there will be more moving parts, so this will continue to fluctuate.

EDIT 1/16/17: We still stand in the neighborhood of 5 scholarships. However, it has been mentioned there are likely moving parts even with our current holdover commits (specifically WR Perry and WR Harris). This gives us 7 and possibly more with any more potential (and still likely) roster defections.

Wow! Thanks for doing that. Very informative.
Would be awesome if Brohm is able to find a couple 4 star difference makers here at the end of the cycle. One on each side of the ball maybe a WR and a DT.
His offense is going to attract some really good WR prospects I bet. Look for a flip from somewhere down the stretch IMO.

Saw a review of class rankings on Twitter today that showed Hope's and Hazell's class rankings. With what Brohm has already added, this class is better than every Hazell class and would be Hope's second best. That's not bad. And this is exactly why a coach should never stick around to coach a bowl.

This is the most important position we are recruiting as evidenced by Brohm's emphasis on it. Having Jackson and Smart in for the spring will be huge and both could see early playing time as a result. Robinson and Hudson are listed as different positions on different sites, so it's hard to project where they will end up. Robinson looks like a guard, so hopefully he sticks there, Hudson's size is intriguing. In spite of the potential depth of this class, don't be surprised if another one is added, especially from the JUCO ranks in hopes of an immediate upgrade. The only entrenched returner is Barron at center. Other than that, it will likely be wide open. Mendez (SO) and McCann (SO) saw a lot of time at T so they will likely have a leg up. DT
Depending on whether Hudson or Robinson end up here, we do not have a commitment here. Perhaps one or both of these guys end up here, but it's hard to say. I'd like to see a commitment here to provide some depth. Neal (SO) and Wilson (JR) return as guys who played a lot as well as Brown (SO), Criddle (SO), Jones (JR), Colmery (JR) and Watts (rFR).

By all accounts, we currently have 17 commitments for this cycle. Depending on how things shake out, we could potentially have 7-10 more. With the early enrollees counting towards last year's scholarship total, that can make a difference too. I would expect at least 5 more to commit before signing day but likely more. I am not aware of many of the prospects that still exist besides JC OL Moore, but would like to see some guys from Indiana still. Position wise, I think we need 1-2 more OL, 1-2 DT, 1-2 LB and possibly 1-2 DB. Depending on the position of Pittman, possibly a TE. We could take a RB, but not likely. WR position is probably done but you can't rule out 1 more there. I think Coach Brohm follows a similar schedule to that and takes the best guys available at those spots.

Okay, that was pretty long winded but I had too much time on my hands. Your thoughts? Who else may we target and get to commit?
Keyante green is still on the team?

I don't think Eddy Wilson will be back. Heard some rumors of an car accident problem. Could also see Rose and Roberts not back either.

I remain cautiously optimistic but realistic. About two-thirds of freshmen need to be red-shirted especially OLs and DTs. It will take time for most of them to develop.

JUCOs are JUCOs for a reason and that reason is usually not good. Some of these guys may step in and make an immediate impact but I'm in the wait-and-see mode.

Not to be a Debby Downer but if you take a look at the other schools that are offering these guys, it's not very impressive. I do think Brohm is doing as well as can be expected with the hand he was dealt.

I'll say it again: One more win each year would be good progress.

Robert Hudson is recruited as an OT and Malcolm Robinson is a DT.

Hudson makes the most sense on the line, particularly at T. His size alone (6'8/6'9) would make leverage difficult on the DL. It can make it tough on the OL too but you see that height more often in tackles, especially pass blockers. I know he has been looking around so we may or may not end up with him in the end, but hopefully we do.

If Robinson is projected as a DT, that is good. I still say another one or two would be good.

I just know that different sites have listed both of the guys differently as far as their position goes (247 lists Hudson as DT and Robinson as OG). And with a new staff, perhaps they have a different interpretation of where they may fit.

Saw a review of class rankings on Twitter today that showed Hope's and Hazell's class rankings. With what Brohm has already added, this class is better than every Hazell class and would be Hope's second best. That's not bad. And this is exactly why a coach should never stick around to coach a bowl.
It's way too early to tell how these players will turn out, But IT FEELS GREAT TO BE EXCITED ABOUT PURDUE FOOTBALL AGAIN! This is why you don't let a new coach go back and forth with old team to bowl games. Hit the ground running.

Sparks and Allstott will likely end up at different positions. Jallow will start-day 1 in secondary (athletic, rangy hitter) unlike guys that played safety position last season.(think Bernard Pollard with better positive attitude)

What is status on Colmery?
What ever happened to Matt Burke -recruited as a 3* TE but likely could of proved value at tackle?

Seems if Hudson were going to play defense he looks like a 3-4 defensive end. Who know's what type of defense the new DC will run. What does Holt run?

The only game I watched he appeared to be mostly in Nickel, but that against LA Tech.

Want to watch the Alabama and Marshall games to see if 4-2-5 is his preferred defense.

Rivals has us currently at 57 in the team recruiting rankings, which is higher than we have been for a while. Depending on attrition, we will probably have 8 to 12 additional verbals by February. Since Rivals bases their team recruiting rankings by the number of recruits and the number of stars for a recruit, we could move into the 40's by the time all is said and done in February.

Doesn't rivals only include the top 20 recruits in each class for ranking purposes?

Although he is listed as a WR by Rivals, hopefully this guy projects at TE. If not, this is a position I think we need to nab at least one of. He has good size and a good frame so he would likely put on weight easily. You have to like the returning guys in Herdman (JR) and Hopkins (SO) and figure they will be in for a big role, especially with the inexperience at WR. Hopefully Trussell (SO) progresses as well.

OL Jalen Jackson
OL Ethan Smart
OL Mark Stickford
OL Robert Hudson
This is the most important position we are recruiting as evidenced by Brohm's emphasis on it. Having Jackson and Smart in for the spring will be huge and both could see early playing time as a result. I edited this to include Hudson as an OT. His size is very intriguing.

DE Tijuan Mason
DE Kai Higgins
The size of both of these guys is good. They appear to be good athletes as well. We do have returning experience in Robinson (SR) and Miles (SR) as well as some depth with Simmons (JR), Faison (SO), Turner (SO), and Larkin (SR). Perhaps someone cracks this lineup, but it seems as if there won't be as much change here.

DT Malcolm Robinson (updated)
This looks to be a good pickup. Although I'd like to see another commitment here or two to provide some depth. Neal (SO) and Wilson (JR) return as guys who played a lot as well as Brown (SO), Criddle (SO), Jones (JR), Colmery (JR) and Watts (rFR).

There is a lot of depth from Roberts (JR), Shuman (SO), Hayes (SO) and Hardy (SR) as well as Little (SO), Rose (SO) and Smiley (rFR).

K/P
We have no current commits and I would not expect that to change this year. We return Dillinger (SO) at Kicker and he was solid and return Schopper (JR) at punter who was very good. I imagine we try to bring in 1-2 in the '18 class.

Nice effort. Grab yourself a beer.

Yep. Already better than any of Hazell's classes and all but one of Hope's.

Just an observation. it's odd that because this class is looking good, we call it Brohm's first recruiting class at Purdue. however, with Hazel, who had to do the same thing to complete Hope's class, we give credit for that class and call it Hope's last class. While he only had about a month to work with, to his credit, Hazell did add about 5-8 players to that class, and was responsible for keeping all of the remaining verbal players. So credit or blame for the 2013 recruiting class with Panfil, Clark, Etling, Yancy, Replogle, Byers, should go to Hazell, not Hope. You could say this was actually Hazell's 5th year recruiting at Purdue, and he still made zero inroads recruiting Indiana talent.

Except Hazell didn't add those player, they simply kept their commitment. Hazell also stayed with his team for the bowl and didn't touch recruiting. Brohm went out and signed better players than Hazell had and got some decomitments from some of the lower rated players. He already improved the class in one week 20 spots and is no longer last in the Big 10. Not to mention he still has a few players he is going after. Brohm has this being the best class Purdue has had in years, but it is because of the additions and subtractions he made in one week. Can't wait to see what he can do in a full year. I give the credit to Parker and not Hazell anyway. Parker was responsible for most of the good recruits in this class and not Hazell, which is why we were able to keep most of the higher rated recruits.

I still wouldn't mind one commit and you can't be surprised if we land one but it's certainly not an area of dire need.

WR Brevin Harris
WR CJ Hayes
WR Tyler Hamilton
WR LaPerion Perry
This position is probably one of the most important since we lose 4 of our top receivers from last season. You have to like the size of Harris and Hayes. I think one or both of these guys could play right away. I would doubt we end up with any more recruits here.

FC- Do you think you could make and share a 2017 updated scholarship chart?

Projected Scholarship Breakdown

These numbers are current and don't predict any defections that may occur in the coaching transition. It is also reflective of those who were originally offered a scholarship. I am not positive on any walk-ons that may have been given a ride so that could affect the numbers some. I will list the walk-ons and if anyone is aware of them receiving a scholarship you can confirm that.

Seniors - 17
SR Walk-ons: Race Johnson (RB), Wes Cook (DB)

Juniors - 15 (or 16 if you include Patterson) + 2 JR JUCOs = 17-18
JR Walk-Ons: Eric Swingler (OL), Aaron Banks (QB), Mike Zeigler (DE), Ryan Sadkowski (LS), Lane Beeler (RB), Jacob Thieneman (S), Antonio Blackmon (CB)

Sophomores - 25 + 1 SO JUCO = 26
SO Walk-Ons: Jake Herr (P), Ronnie Hill (S), Myles Homan (K), Malcolm Dotson (WR), David Day (CB)

Redshirt Freshmen - 8
rFR Walk-Ons: Emilio Appolloni (OL), Bryce Brown (OL), Sam Loebig (OL), Ryan Flaherty (OL), Brennan Thieneman (S), Eric Ferguson (OL), Wade Buckman (TE), Danny Carrollo (QB), Nelson Arent (LS)

Incoming Freshmen - currently 14

That gives a total of 68 or 69 if Patterson remains, leaving 16-17 spots available for freshman recruits, of which 14 are currently accounted for. That means there are only 2-3 scholarships available for more freshmen. Perhaps that is why things have slowed quickly. Coach Brohm may know there is not much wiggle room at this moment so they are being careful about what they take. Of course scholarships are a fluid situation, especially with defections more than likely in a coaching change.

All of this info is based upon the official roster at Purdue Sports, which is up to date as of the last couple of weeks. And of course I could be off on something in here. I did not list all scholarship players so I didn't end up typing out 100+ names.

That is rather disappointing to know we only have 2-3 scholarships left to give as there are at least about 5 more people I would like to add.

Well it is possible Braum talks to the current roster and lets some people know there will be no playing time for them. It is possible we clear out another 2-3 spots.

Hazell added Panfil, Yancey, Clark, and a handful of other 3-star guys. That may have actually been the pinnacle of his recruiting at Purdue. Things went downhill from there, and what should have been an improved class in 2014 with DH2 having an entire recruiting cycle to work with, actually took a step backwards..

this is what I remember as well. In a short time, Hazell actually added some quality players, and actually flipped one player. and unlike the new coach at WKU, Hazell was actually able to keep Hope's recruits from decommitting. The ability to keep a class intact is actually a tough job. Look at the current mass exodus at WKU. After Brohm left, so did all of their quality recruits. I believe Hazell should be given credit for that. However, as signing day approached, I questioned some of his scholarships offered as they did not address our needs, but just seemed to be giving scholarships away to 3* players who were still available. Hazell loved running backs, and Daylin Dawkins and Keith Byers II were two of his last day commitments. yes, they had talent, but adding them gave Hazell a class of 24 recruits with 4 Rbs, 3 Wrs, 3 Dbs, 9 def linemen, and only one 2* offensive lineman with 0 linebackers. and the weight of his 9 defensive linemen averaged 234 pounds, but they supposedly had great speed. Rather than going after any 3* player he could find, Hazell should have used those last scholarships to go after some JuCo offensive linemen. the class was ranked 62, and 13th in the BIG 10, but you could see how lopsided it was and that Hazell had no idea how to build a recruiting class.

That is rather disappointing to know we only have 2-3 scholarships left to give as there are at least about 5 more people I would like to add.

My guess is that after Christmas Break, there will be another 5-10 spots open up due to players leaving. There may be some younger guys (freshman, sophomores, and RS'd players) that likely see the writing on the wall with a new staff and the increased recruiting ability and leave for greener pastures. Brohm getting 5-10 more chances to find some better players to bring is invaluable to the program turning around quicker. Brohm bringing in 10 players constitutes his ability to get roughly 12% of the roster in his first season as guys he brought in. That would be huge to added depth and getting guys to buy in to his vision.

He's so tall though. Seems hard to get your pad level down and keep balance at 6-9?
I believe Hudson is an OL. now as for Jalen Jackson, he's listed as an OL but he said he's open to play DL in order to help the team out. His stature is more in line for DL than Hudson's.
