2017 Recruiting Class breakdown

Hazell added Panfil, Yancey, Clark, and a handful of other 3-star guys. That may have actually been the pinnacle of his recruiting at Purdue. Things went downhill from there, and what should have been an improved class in 2014 with DH2 having an entire recruiting cycle to work with, actually took a step backwards..

Panfil was recruited and visited before Hazell came and was given credit to be recruited by assistants.

Yancey was a flip from Kentucky and didn't sign until January. Credit was given to Shoop for his recruitment, so you could make the argument that he was signed by Hazell, but he was already being heavily recruited.

Clark signed in December so Hazell didn't sign him.

I don't think Eddy Wilson will be back. Heard some rumors of an car accident problem. Could also see Rose and Roberts not back either.

I think we should expect a fair amount of turnover/transfers. In addition to the suspensions, several reports indicated (including Panfill's exit interview) that several players have an attitude problem and are just going through the motions.

When Tiller came in, he kicked butt and took names and ran off quite a few problems and underachievers. There is a new sheriff in town and he wants to set a new tone. I would not be surprised to see five or more scholarship players with remaining eligibility leave the program. My guess is at least three will be gone. If I am right, Brohm has quite a few scholarships left.

I wonder about some of the DBs that have been suspended for a while, like Evyn Cooper, Little, etc. I also wonder about LB Hudson and RB Keyante Green.

If they're smart, they'll get their head on straight and try to make an impact under the new staff. Somehow, I doubt it.

I think Green gets the boot. Been here 4 years, should have his degree, have a nice life.

DE Tijuan Mason just de-committed ! via the standard template tweet ! like Tusha, he was recruited by Parker. while that creates another scholarship available, does that also make a statement about Parker's future of being retained?

Cooper is no longer listed on the roster. I did not account for him in this number breakdown as a result. Was it also Roberts who was suspended? Perhaps he does not return.

I will update the first post with this new info. I'm a little disappointed because I felt like he was an underrated guy with great size. But because I think DE is a position of need, I would hope we would fill it with another freshman since the only other commit is a JUCO, albeit a sophomore JUCO.

Hudson isnt a scholarship player.

There are two DE's listed as commits on the WKU site, but BJ Sharpe has decommitted and the other one has a new offer from Purdue. Sharpe looks like a tackle. Brohm may want both of them. Giovanni Hightower is 6'6" and weighs 245 now.

The thing about Mason is that I think he projects better as a TE than he does as a DE. When watching his film, I saw one truly competent team he played against. The highlights against that team had Mason frequently making a tackle in the second level or having him handled and the RB making 4-5 yards before being tackled. Would Mason have provided some depth...yes, but I don't think he was a player that would have been starting next season and helping any time soon. Poor leverage and poor technique...as shown by his lack of ability to put a hand in the dirt.

And, if I am honest, the more guys that Brohm is able to pull in himself at this point in time...the better off the program will be in the next 2-3 years. If Brohm is able to run off the guys that aren't at Purdue for the right reasons and replace them with his recruits...the easier the sell job will be overall. Tiller ran off upwards of 15 guys his first year from what I have heard. If Brohm is able to replace 10-15 on the roster as his own recruits (he has 4-5 right now I think), that would constitute roughly 12%-18% of the roster in his first season as guys HE recruited. That doesn't take in to account having a few guys already that are incoming freshman next season he may have contacted and established some sort of relationship with OR resold the program under his direction and getting them to be a recruit under him. Record aside...THAT is the most important aspect to next season and that is where DH went horrible wrong right off the bat. Didn't get on campus to meet with current players and didn't spend the little time he had in recruiting like Brohm did. I will repeat...DH DID NOT meet with players individually or positionally after he was named coach and didn't think it was a problem.

I agree with this. But wonder if we put too much emphasis on it. If DH was able to connect with players on the team it may not have mattered. Let's say when he came in January he was dynamic, players loved him, and they all bought in (or left). Him going to the bowl game and getting a delayed start may not have been as big a deal. BUT, he was NOT dynamic. He NEVER connected with his players. And we all witnessed the result.

But I think you hit the key point there. Because he failed to do those things, it showed he never placed an emphasis on those things. That is where most college coaches fail at the NFL level...they don't run things like a CEO and are much more interested in the hoorah (Harbaugh wearing thin on his players in San Fran). Hazell seemed much more like a CEO than a motivator.

He couldn't even do that right lol.

I would hope that we do not "run off" players. Be honest and relay expectations but I am not comfortable with telling players they no longer have a scholarship so long as they are doing what is asked of them. If they want to leave on their own accord because they don't like the new expectations, then so be it.

didn't realize Little was suspended, Mason got Rutgers and 2 others in his final 3.

With the departure of Mason, Purdue's class ratings sank to #65. I am sure a couple of additions will bring it back up. however, the expectations of this class should be in the #55-60 range.

As for Hazell, he admitted he did not conduct an evaluation of his team and his team needs upon being hired. He therefore signed about 7-8 athletes to fill out Hope's recruiting class with no clue if those players were needed or would make an impact. He also admitted arriving late and trying to complete that first recruiting class made him behind in his evaluations of needs for his next year's recruiting class.

in other words, recruiting was never a priority of his, and he sat on his chair thinking his assistants would bring in good recruits for him without ever having plan of what he wanted. He never made a real evaluation of our team needs until this year. this year's class is probably the best at addressing our needs, but was the worst in talent level because no quality recruit wanted to plat at Purdue for Hazell. for the majority of recruits Hazell brought in this year, Purdue was by far their best offer. Mitch West was probably the best example. By decommitting, he now has Illinois St and Western Illinois to choose from. The caliber of player that attended our summer camps was also lower. the quality players that did commit like Hamilton committed knowing there would be a significant coaching change.

I haven't see Brohm lure in any 4/5 star athletes in yet. But the 3 JuCo players he signed (DB Jallow, DE Higgins, and OL Smart) and the others he received commitments from actually seem to make sense and fill a void. looking to the future, The addition of Moore looks doubtful as he looks like he'll remain on the West Coast. But White , Hightower and Sharpe look at least possible. And there has to be a reason Potts hasn't committed to IU or ND yet. At this point, it's not that we need Potts. But his addition would show Brohm's ability to recruit. and would show the rest of the state, that Purdue is interested in recruiting the best local talent. Something we seemed to have forgotten.

Something that came to light to me today. CJ Hayes made the Kentucky all state team and his team won a state championship. That's all nice and good. I believe most of us think of him as a nice 3* WR. But he was also a very good defensive back last year with 5 interceptions with two run back for touchdowns. .

How about Purdue consideration of All State LB from GA, Juwuan Jones? He is also All Region and All County with 136 tackles in just 11 games (12.4 tackles a game). Also, 15 tackles for loss. He is 6'3" and 232lbs. 3 Star rated by Rivals and 247Sports. Current WKU commit. Committed under Coach Brohm.

Well stated, ihave said for sometime that we don't want or need every kid from Indiana but we do need to show That we can hold our own with the top or most promising Indiana recruits.A indiana coach that I played H.S football with said that the word is already out that BRHOM is a whole different animal.........

Updates:

I will update the first post with the recent on-goings. This includes the Hightower commit as well as the news of defections. The news of the defections did not carry much weight with my number projections because Cooper and Cook were already not on the roster when I did this. So it was really only two for now. That should leave us with approximately 5 scholarships still available overall. As has been discussed in other posts, more defections are likely simply out of the nature of the change. I would imagine with a new S&C guy in town, their goal will be to see who really wants to be there in January. But for now that is where our numbers stand.

two questions for people who know the answers. I know there is an LOI day. I'm not sure of the exact date and I'm too lazy to look it up. The exact date is not important to this question. First question. Do you expect all of the defections to occur before this date? or do you expect others to defect after this date as well during the Spring ? Second question. most athletes sign on the first day of the LOI signing period. However, not all athletes do. Some like that special attention they receive on the next day. How long after that special LOI day does Purdue have to offer an athlete a scholarship?

My questions revolve around the what ifs surrounding Patterson and other players who may leave the program after signing day. What options do we have to fill those scholarships? Can we sign somebody next Spring or Summer and have them be counted against our 2017 class? and be able to play next fall? I know there is an initial date. is there a final date as well?

Wolegib - I do not think there is an "end-date". As long as you have available scholarships (85 is the football limit in D1), you can offer a kid the first day that classes start in the fall - he can accept and be in classes and on the team the next day.

Didn't Haze sign the punt returner right before the season?

Just an observation. it's odd that because this class is looking good, we call it Brohm's first recruiting class at Purdue. however, with Hazel, who had to do the same thing to complete Hope's class, we give credit for that class and call it Hope's last class. While he only had about a month to work with, to his credit, Hazell did add about 5-8 players to that class, and was responsible for keeping all of the remaining verbal players. So credit or blame for the 2013 recruiting class with Panfil, Clark, Etling, Yancy, Replogle, Byers, should go to Hazell, not Hope. You could say this was actually Hazell's 5th year recruiting at Purdue, and he still made zero inroads recruiting Indiana talent.

You're right. JUCO's are a "band-aid" fix for a "good" team that needs to stop the bleeding for a year....but not for a team like Purdue that is hemorrhaging. A middling JUCO coming to Purdue isn't going to make much of a difference.

With the addition of D'Jaundrae Edwards, the WR class would seemingly be done or complete. This is an intriguing prospect that is well rated and fielded some solid offers. The fact that he will enroll in January will provide him a leg-up on the potential to play right away. With few guys having returning experience at the spot, Edwards and Hamilton will have a great shot to play early. Do not be surprised to see both of them on the field from the get-go.

The first post is updated with the latest commit. Once the class is done after signing day, I'll recap again. But I will continue to update as commits roll in.

And you know this how? Brohm is picking players he feels fit his system. JUCOs might just be exactly what he needs.

Looking at WKU's recruiting history, Brohm doesn't really have a history of recruiting JuCo players. So his recruiting of JuCos now must mean he really likes the player or he sees a really big need/hole. Jallow is an exception as Brohm recruited him out of high school as an assistant at Louisville.

Exactly, so if we are in full blown hemorage mode do we just take next season off because juco players are not always ideal....? Let's let BRHOM make his assessments on these juco players that we unavoidably need to recruit and hope for the best.

JuCo players can be great recruits and great contributors. However, I view their recruitment a waste if they are not an immediate starter. All of their development should be complete before their arrival. In most cases, they arrive as a Junior. If a player is not starting as a junior, he is essentially a waste of a recruit.

I would generally agree but there are exceptions. Rob Ninkovich was brought in by Tiller from College of DuPage and I'm not sure he ever started but he was certainly a major contributor here. I remember Tiller also recruited a QB to backup Brees in 98' David Edgerton and I doubt he was more than an insurance policy in event of injury.

Sometimes JC recruits fill a position need or skill position vacancy but are important for roster depth as well. I know alot schools go out every yr to get great JC athletes, in hopes that they can contribute eventually. Its a crap shoot.

Unfortunately for all of us....we have come up empty on several 4 yr recruits and with injuries and off the field issues here we are....

I think it's a positive sign Brohm actually recruited and signed several JuCos . His past history shows that is not his typical recruiting path or desire. And yet, he launched forward. To me, that showed a coach that evaluated our talents and needs, and went out to fill those needs.

Doubtful he recruited Jallow as an assistant at Louisville. Brohm hasn't coached at Louisville since 2008. Doubt he recruited him 9 years ago.
