2016-17 vs. 2017-18 Purdue

am I looking at the wrong chart?
still seeing kenpom adj tempo as 152 rank for 2018 and 113 for 2017.

You are correct in the overall tempo numbers. Perhaps I read your post wrong. It appeared that you were countering an argument that Purdue was playing faster and was higher scoring by suggesting the overall tempo numbers dispute that.

To really understand the tempo numbers, you have to look at the O vs D breakdown and when you do, you find that Wolegib is correct that Purdue's offense is playing faster.

Now, I'd wager that will slow down a bit once conference play kicks in but I think our offensive tempo will still be better than last year when all is said and done.

Just a little stat breakdown...... so PJ hasn't improved? Here you go.....
Last year free throw percentage: 70.5%
This year's free throw percentage: 90.3% (With a few more attempts and makes would qualify as the 33rd best free throw shooter in the Country)
Last Year's 3 Point shooting percentage: 40.4%
This Year's 3 Point shooting percentage: 51.8% (With a few more attempts and makes would qualify as the 8th best 3-point shooter in the Country)
Last Year's Field Goal Percentage: 45.5%
This Year's Field Goal Percentage: 51.4%
Last Year's Steal total: 36
This Years Steal total (Projected based on 24 so far in 14 games): 60
Last Year's Points per game: 7.4 ppg
This Years points per game: 9.5 ppg
Last Year's based on 40 minutes per game: 10.3 ppg
This year based on 40 minutes per game: 13.3 ppg

Assist to turnover ratio not quite as stellar as last year so far but still excellent at 2.9 to 1. (This ratio puts him about 32nd in the nation)
Maybe PJ's overall style of play hasn't changed but to say he hasn't improved you just aren't looking at the facts.

wonder how many expect this coming into year 1. and if there is an expectation on having abrupt changes made during one offseason to accommodate the next year, especially with a roster and recruits that can change.

our tempo rank is down so far (152 vs 113 last year).

but like last year, the tempo is offset by the crazy scoring efficiency to get the higher point totals. not only making shots, but a lot of 3s and FTs. top 20 in FG%, 3FG%, 3FG made, FTs made.

was also interesting hearing hummel on a few different broadcasts, say how painters motion offense has changed since his playing time. will be interesting to see how much it may/may not change by next year too.
One of his (Hummel) key points was that since the Bahamas, Painter is calling more sets thus forcing the team to run some offense before chucking up a quick three. Early threes in the half court sunk us against Tennessee. Not only is the shot not as open but the offensive rebounding is nonexistent because the defense has not had to work and are in perfect blockout position.
The motion changes with personnel and will be changing again as this new team develops next year. Why? Because we will no longer have low post centric team. Penetration and weak side slashes to the rim with a couple of shooters outside will be the future. More play at the rim. Fewer three point shooters. Haarms is a wild card. In a good way.
