1968 -- (1) Purdue at (2) Notre Dame

Purdue was a prominent program under Mollenkoph and arose to be a national power in the middle-late 60s. This was a result of having a Prez (Hovde) and AD (Mackey) who both understood that priority #1 for Purdue Athletics was for football to be successful. Something that no Purdue Prez and AD have worked toward together since. Maybe Daniels and MBob can now, but the road back is a long one from the squandered success and opportunity of the JT era.

thanks , was 12 yrs. old back then. Nice hearing the great team of Schenkel and Wilkerson doing the game. Bill Flemming was good too back in the day.

Ever since I stepped into Ross-Ade stadium as a freshman, I have been captivated by Purdue football! At the time, I wasn't even aware of what a big deal being in the upper echelon of college football meant.

That's what makes the last 7 years, and the years of Colletto, Akers, et al, so painful !

I was expecting leather helmets :D
how about leather pants

FYI - Game is now available on YouTube

I was just a boy, but I was there for the big win. How exciting it was. I was with my dads law partner, holding my Purdue penant and climbing the steps to our seats when some guy yells "hey son, you can't come up here with that (Purdue penant)", then a big guy in a Purdue sweater yelled that's OK you can come up here. OMG what memories.

Correct me if I am wrong but, Phipps is the only QB to beat ND all 3 times. Man do I miss the 60's and "give the ball to LeRoy!"
Mike Phipps was the first to beat the Fighting Rocknes three straight years and nobody else did until Matt Leinhart and the Tommy Trojans did in 2003,2004 and 2005.I don't know of any other QB who has done it since.

My great grandmother, who lived in South Bend, died days before that game. My Dad went back for the funeral (we lived in LA). My Dad's Aunt lived next door to the ND AD and got my Dad a field pass for the game. I think I still have that pass somewhere as my Dad gave it to me when he got home. My Dad did not let on that he was cheering for Purdue!
