Purdue snippet from The Athletic

13. Purdue

Previous: 12

Projected starters: Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, Camden Heide, Trey Kaufman-Renn, Caleb Furst

Top reserves: Myles Colvin, Daniel Jacobsen (freshman), Will Berg, Kanon Catchings (freshman), Gicarri Harris (freshman), Raleigh Burgess (freshman), Brian Waddell

Purdue’s KenPom finishes in the five years that proceeded the Zach Edey era: 9, 19, 5, 9, 24. It’s going to be difficult to replace Edey, but Matt Painter won a lot of basketball games before Edey showed up and he’ll continue to do so. Painter has a really good core returning, led by Smith, who became a killer in pick-and-roll last season as both a scorer and distributor. If you asked college coaches to rank the best point guards in the country, he’d be near the top. Purdue got a head start on what life without Edey would be like last summer when it went on a foreign tour without him and Kaufman-Renn led the team in scoring. Painter also has three centers on the bench who could be next in line as dominant low-post scorers. The 7-foot-2 Berg has been learning behind Edey the last two years, and then Painter signed two centers in Jacobsen and Burgess. Jacobsen was a standout last weekend at the tryouts for the U.S. U-18 team. When I asked two coaches there who stood out, both mentioned Jacobsen, with one saying he’ll eventually be a star. He’s 7-3, skilled and playing at Purdue, so odds are in his favor.

The fascist left is very real. They won't talk about this on BNIs hip hop radio.

Ole Paint , ole dog sniffed that one out

Well I like it when we find these gems, kids who are like Zack and Smith and we are like the only ones offering them a chance and then with the world scratching their 5 star balls the 2 time national player of the year evolves or The General evolves....you go Matt , you keep being you amidst this crazy jacked up money driven time we are in . Zack walked outta here a better man and we were too because of him . Character is something your raised with and is developed because it's in the heart. Love being a Boiler, always have.

BOT Compensation Committee approves Katie Gearlds contract extension, raise

Today, the BOT Compensation Committee approved the contract extension terms for Katie Gearlds.

Working to confirm the terms, but per Mike Carmin’s report, Gearlds will be extended through the 2028-29 season, with her salary increasing from $550k to $700k.

Still has to go through a final approval, but this was something that has been in the works for awhile now.

Indiana All-Star Week THREAD

Indiana All-Star Week is set to begin on Sunday in what will be a packed week of basketball, featuring several Purdue commits and targets.

I will be in attendance for Monday’s Futures Game, Wednesday’s Junior-Senior Game and Saturday’s Indiana vs. Kentucky Game.

Will have thoughts, stories and updates on this thread throughout.

Some of the players expected to be in attendance:

Saturday: 2024 commit Jordyn Poole

Wednesday: 2024 commit Jordyn Poole vs. 2025 commits Avery Gordon and Kira Reynolds and 2025 target Meredith Tippner.

Monday: 2026 targets Brooklynn Renn, KK Holman, Myah Epps, Lillian Barnes and 2027 target Lillie Graves.

Catchings and Release

I wanted to start a new thread just to use that title. Actually, I come to bury him, not to praise him.

The last time I watched him on court, Brownsburg was playing a tournament nail-biter, hanging on to a five-point lead in the final two minutes of regulation, and the purple people passed to Catchings. Instead of moving the ball and running off time with no shot-clock to force the offense, he stood until he drew a double-team from 25 feet out and then jacked a three-point brick that clanged so far away it started an easy fastbreak the other way that cut the lead to three.

Brownsburg managed to survive, winning in spite of him rather than because of him, at least until the bitter end.

The following was taken from the Fan Nation / Sports Illustrated report on the 2023 IHSAA Class 4A Semi-State final when Ben Davis defeated Brownsburg 66-38 …

“Brownsburg, which edged No. 9 Jennings County 51-47 in the semis, was able to put up more of a fight against the (Ben Davis) Giants, albeit for a half. Forward Elhadj Diallo, the only senior regular, led the Bulldogs with 15 points. Junior Kanon Catchings had 12 but was benched after mouthing off to a referee and receiving a technical foul with 5:24 remaining. That was in the middle of a 10-0 Giants run.”

“Catchings made just three of 12 shots, including one of seven 3-pointers.”

“The nephew of Hall of Famer Tamika Catchings could be heard trash-talking throughout the game. That fired up the Giants.”

Next he moved on to a basketball factory. Gotta wonder about that report card.

Implications Athletes as University Employees

With direct payments on the table, it is reasonable to see Athletes as employees of the University. Here are some implications I see...

1. Signing Bonuses paid directly to HS Signees. I'd like to see those returnable to the school if they leave early, like an Early Termination clause in an employment contract. "You want to enter the portal? Sure. But you need to return the $1 million, including taxes, plus 7% interest per annum". It's a double edged sword.

2. Unions, CBA, Strikes. Are these on the table now? Could we see games played entirely by walkons?

3. Salary Caps for competitive balance and integrity? Bahahaha. Integrity.

4. Elimination of the 85 "scholarship" limit. If players are going to get paid, I'd like to see walkons who don't get NIL instead get scholarships.

5. Trades, Cuts, Waiver Wire?

6. Concession stand prices. $27.50 for Nacho Chips. Cheese is $10 extra.
