Purdue football 41 Days to Purdue Football: Ben Furtney

USATSI_16827311.jpg

Ben Furtney - Sr.
South Elgin, IL (St. Charles North)
6', 235 pounds
Fullback
2024 Projection: Starter at Fullback

Furtney is a fun story. He came to Purdue as a walk-on in 2020 and was primarily a linebacker. He redshirted that year, but found a home on special teams for 11 games in 2021. That year he ended up returning one kickoff for six yards. He stayed on Special teams in 2022 and started lining up as Purdue's primary fullback on offense. Agaisnt Maryland he caught a key 20 yard pass out of the backfield in the fourth quarter on 3rd and 2 that kept Purdue's go ahead drive going. He only played in 8 games that year due to injury, but he returned in 2023 to play in all 12 games, amassing four special teams tackles.

Going into this season Furtney will likely continue to be a special teams ace while occasionally lining up at fullback when needed.

Purdue football 42 Days to Purdue Football: Cooper Kitchel

Cooper Kitchel - Fr.
West Lafayette, IN (West Lafayette HS)
6'2", 187 pounds
Linebacker
2024 Projection: Likely Redshirt

This is a weird one for me to write, mostly because today's player is the son of a player who was a starter when I was at Purdue as a student. As a result, that makes me old.

Cooper Kitchell is a townie walk-on from West Lafayette HS, where he won three conference championships as a two-way player. He had
664 receiving yards with eight touchdowns and made 36 tackles as a senior in. As a junior he had four touchdown receptions on 226 yards with 47 tackles and a pair of sacks in 2022.

As for his dad? It is Kelly Kitchel, a long-time member of the Purdue football radio crew and he was a multi-year starter during the Drew Brees era. Kelly Kitchel started for Purdue in 2001 and 2002 and was a key member of the Rose Bowl team. To go back even further, I remember seeing Kelly play basketball for Lewis Cass HS in the Marion Regional during the final one-class Indiana HS tournament in 1997.

This is definitely a family affair, as his grandfather and uncle both played basketball at Purdue. Even his twin brother brother Carson is currently on the roster as a walk-on quarterback.

Cooper himself is a longshot to see the field this year, but he should be a quality practice player.

Purdue football 44 days to Purdue Football: Ayden Murray & Nick Levy

Ayden Murray - Fr.
Shaker Heights, OH (Shaker Heights HS)
5'10", 168 pounds
Defensive Back
2024 Projection: Likely Redshirt

Murray is a preferred walk-on from Shaker Heights, Ohio that was both an offensive and defensive player in high school. He was an All-Conference selection twice and earned conference defensive player of the year honors during his career at Shaker Heights. The two-way standout totaled 35 tackles and an interception and added 13 catches for 189 yards and three scores in six games.

He is an almost certain redshirt this coming season.

Nick Levy - Jr.
Ashburn, VA (William & Mary)
5'10", 229 pounds
Long Snapper
2024 Projection: Starter

I am projecting Levy as the starter mostly because he is the onlt longsnapper on the current roster. He is a gift from the portal, where he started all 11 games last season at William & Mary. He was even a third team All-American at the FCS level, which is news to me because I didn't even know they gave All-America honors to long snappers. He has a total of 24 starts in his career and was a Freshman All-American in 2022. He also played linebacker in high school, so he can get down the field and make a tackle or two as well.

Purdue football 45 Days to Purdue Football: Devin Mockobee

Devin Mockobee - Jr.
Boonville, IN (Boonville HS)
6', 200 pounds
Running Back
2024 Projection: Starter

You may have heard of this guy.

Mockobee enters this season looking for a 1,000 yard season, something that is a real possibility and it would be the first such season for a Purdue running back since Kory Sheets in 2008 and only the ninth such season overall. At 1,775 yards he is currently 18th on the career rushing list, and if he matches last season's total of 807 yards he would move into seventh place on the all-time list. A 1,000 yard season gets him to fifth and within striking distance of the all-time record if he returns for his senior season.

All this from a guy that essentially came out of nowhere. He didn't even play in the 2022 season opener against Penn State, but by the end of the season he was starting. He has six career games of at least 100 yards, and there should be a few more coming this year.

All in all, I expect a big year from Mockobee. His sophomore season saw his numbers take a slight dip, but mostly because Tyrone Tracy was so good. With Reggie Love III also in the backfield with him he should still have plenty of chances to have a great year.

What say you BNI? Will this get the attention of more black voters?

B10 best experienced players 24-25

This list is just a rough draft....read below and give us your own....
1. Braden Smith
2. Bruce Thornton
3. Ace Baldwin Jr.
4. Payton Sandfort
5. Dawson Garcia
6 TKR
7. Mack Mgbako
8. Malik Reanu
9. Owen Freeman
10. Julian Reece

There are many, many transfers and players from New teams that likely push many of these top 10 down a peg or two.....likely several pegs. Not to mention frosh that few know anything about. I likely totally MISSED a star or 2, just doing this off the top of my head....

But I think those top 2 should be 1 or 2 on most everyone's list. Love to have either to anchor my team.

I am sure 3-10+ can be moved up or down....as you feel. Notice, I think TKR is poised for a massive breakout year.

Someone that has studied these transfer guys and NEW teams can give us a WAY more complete list. @boilerzz or site guys prob could help us out with a better list....

Anyway....your thoughts....
