The Hard Hedge

What you’re seeing, in addition to a hard hedge (double coming off the screen) is Braden at time getting doubled even before the screen comes. The counter in either case is to either get the ball out of his hands quickly, essentially creating an immediate four on three for his teammates, or to split the double team himself.

He seems to want to dribble his way out of the double and keep the ball in his hands, which generally is not working.
dribbles AROUND the double, taking lots of steps backwards and giviging the defense time to get into place. And using HUGE amounts of energy to do it! He was looking whipped by halftime. (JMO)

Issues

I've been stunned by how many times he's been matched this season already. Elite playmaking skills but 1/2 step slow of being able to dictate the game with his ball handling. Crazy how many good, Fast pg's there are now. He can be better with experience and help from his teammates, but POY doesn't seem in the cards.
Completely agree. He’s garnering attention in a way that team just couldn’t do when Zach was on the court and he needs to be able to adjust. He, Matt and PJ will continue to watch film, he’ll get more experience and I fully expect him and this team to get better, but I agree that AA and BTPOU may not be in the cards, which is fine so long as he and the team continuously improve.

Issues

Talk about laying an egg, probably the best point guard Purdue will ever have and you question his ability? Purdue lost, lets not jump off a cliff! Purdue got outplayed by a really good Penn St. team that is vastly underrated! Purdues top 3 players did not play well, TKR and Loyer had 12 turnovers! Penn St. can compete at the top of the conference this year. They have the best rated (computer metrics) players in the conference!
There is quite a difference between him saying "great or just good" to your calling him out as "questioning his ability".
Top rated (computer metrics) indeed!! (it's settled then)

The Hard Hedge

Ever since the travesty of Dick Bennet being the coach of Wisc, The Hard Hedge or "goon ball" is something that has changed basketball for the worse. Foul players constantly and dare the refs to blow the whistle. Not only Wisc, Mary, but also used by PSU, NW, and Rut
Agree on the goon ball. Purdue was not good last night and deserved to lose but the way that game was reffed is kind of crazy. They started off calling it pretty tight and at one point the fouls were I believe seven to one against PSU. Penn State didn’t play any differently after that on defense, but the refs essentially decided “we can’t keep calling it like this and need to even up the fouls”.

That’s an oversimplification, but I don’t think I’m too far off.

Issues

Is Braden actually just a good but not great player? So far he’s laid two eggs when really good defensive teams have focused on taking him out of his game. Maybe that’s all that he has.

He has no help bringing the ball up when he gets double teamed no body steps up to make the other team pay it will be a long season if they don’t figure it out

When Harris is in the game, he has helped at times - Colvin also did once or twice.....agree with the premise that he needs help and more options......they also probably need to pick their spots with pace......even though Penn State likes the fast tempo, might have been better for Purdue last night - although I don't think much different strategy mattered as Penn State was just the better team for the game.

Penn State goes to Rutgers next on Tuesday - that will be interesting with a pair of Aces.

Dave Doeren

ESPN Radio reported today that Bill Belechik interviewed for the NCaro. Job today
Very surprising. 😮
I like it. If you're gonna swing big, swing BIG! I'm sure a bunch of naysayer on the UNC boards were screaming "Bellicheck would never come here! Bellicheck won't even talk to UNC! Bellicheck is a pipedream!!".......That is, until he interviews at UNC.

That's why Purdue should swing big. Take a shot at Campbell, Kiffin, Mullen, hell, throw a call to Coach Prime just for laughs. Make those guys say no.

I quit watching at halftime and switched to volleyball. Last time I checked, we were down 25. Surprised they made it a little more respectable of a whipping.

Got up to 27 at one point Lenny.....wasn't nearly as close as the final score. We missed you, haha.

Looks like #4-seed Purdue women's volleyball team swept Western Michigan in an otherwise tight match and now faces upset-winner Loyola Chicago, who knocked off BYU. Go Lady Boilers!

5 games left vs......

"Goon-Ball"(tm Dick Bennet) defensive teams. Rutgers twice, Wisc, Maryl, and NW.
C'mon man....Is this still the same Purdue that iu used to whine about during the Keady era for playing "Gangster" defense?

Purdue and Keady perfected the bump, grab, hold, check. And now we're whining because other teams are doing it to us?

The problem is, Purdue does't have enough good ball handlers who can make a team pay when they're going to extend the D and get into you.

We're going to see the same thing against Auburn which could result in another ugly loss.

Rumor: Belichick to UNC

I thought he might be a good candidate for a college GM role.
The rub with him is he wanted to be GM and coach at his next destination like he did in New England. He might be pursuing the same in college football.

I don’t see the big deal going from pros to college with the right coordinators and recruiters. Charlie weis would flash his patriot rings and that’s all he did for recruiting and had to classes. Belicheck doesn’t have a style of offense or defense that won’t translate.

“IF” There Is To Be HC Change

Mendenhall quit for a couple years to become a “better person and coach”. I don’t think he will be motivated by money. He’s from Utah and spent nearly his entire career in the desert, except for Virginia (and briefly Oregon state after he graduated from there) and he had to leave Virginia. Just doesn’t seem like a good plan to build a program around.
He’s going to Utah state. No surprise he was never leaving the desert.

The Hard Hedge

Is there a counter to it? If so, why can’t we figure it out? It feels like it just blows up our sets every single game and we become discombobulated.

A rousing win for the Lions in their home tomb….

It will be interesting to see if they show up on the road in the B1G.

The scheduling gods have already given them a huge assist by avoiding Mackey Arena.
They don't have to go to Maryland, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio St., Oregon, Purdue and Wisconsin! They could sweep Indiana, Minnesota, and Washington! They are good!

OT!! - IU STINKS!!!!

Was that Michigan game the one where it was like our 4th or 5th one in 8 days cuz Michigan had covid or was that the previous year?

It was - original game in January was postponed. Purdue had slipped to 4-3, won six straight, then lost @ Michigan. Then they won four straight to get to 14-4......then finished with losses @ Michigan State and @ Wisconsin.

Colvin and Hiede

heide is not a 4, and TKR is not a 5. Unfortunately, Furst, berg and Burgess did not step up to replace Jacobson. Playing small ball may work against some teams, but not in the physical Big 10.

you may scream all you want about how bad the refs in the BIG 10 are. But the facts are they haven't changed how they call a game in the last 10 years. And by now, Purdue fans should realize this. Painter should also know by now how the refs are going to call the game, and plan accordingly.
The biggest problem with having Heide and Colvin in the starting lineup, is Braden has no help at bringing the ball up, Lance last year filled that role perfectly. If Purdue is going to go small, they need to pick up the pace. TKR, Heide and Colvin had a total of 6 rebounds(won't do it). TKR and Loyer had 12 Turnovers. The BT is going to brutal this year. Their are 8 teams that could win it! Purdues chances shrunk last night. Penn St. has a very favorable BT schedule, they have the tie breaker with Purdue.
