Always remember Reeves fondly. My wife and I were seated next to John on a flight back from St. Pete after spring break his final year at Purdue. Well spoken young man that had overcome much adversity as a Boiler.

Turner youre right. Also Keith Smith was a notable switch from QB. Iowa has done it for years.

Pretty early on, the handwriting was on the wall, if Mike wanted to see the field it would be as something other than QB, which he wanted to be.

Candidly, I'm not sure what that means. This has been a rambling thread, with one or two thinking Rice was moving to DB, and others thinking he's set for WR, but to declare, "enough?" On whose authority?

Edit: He was listed as an ATH by the recruiting services.

"He" who? The comment to which you responded was in reference to Stu Schweigert, a HS QB.

The issue in the thread really boils down to the recruitment of HS QBs, their athleticism, and their ability to play other positions in college. The fact that someone also played other positions in HS, or that they were recruited to play other positions in college, really highlights that point.

There were Numerous threads/posts since he committed about “just move him to DB” that ignore his history & that fact that he’s made VERY clear that he has no intention of playing there. That what annoys me about these. If he was open to playing DB, he’d likely be at tO$U because that’s where programs at that level wanted him & he let them know that he had ZERO interest in anything besides WR. That’s why we have him. If we get him & immediately (within 2 yrs) start to screw around with that, he’s very likely out the door...

Bob Griese was the punter and place kicker as well as quarterback during his time at Purdue. And Purdue finished the 1966 season in the top ten nationally with a Rose Bowl win over USC. One platoon football existed from 1954 to 1964. Griese played his first season in 1964, so it is possible he played both quarterback and safety his first collegiate season. But most of you are too young to know this.

Len Dawson started his collegiate career with Purdue in 1954. He played defense as well as quarterback during his time at Purdue. Oh, and he was also the punter for our team.

Chuck Piebes played QB for Purdue in the 1970 season. It didn't go well for him and Gary Danielson was the QB in 1971. So Chuck went over to the defense and played safety in 1971. Purdue beat Stanford in Palo Alto 26-14 in 1970 with Piebes at QB. All American Jim Plunket was QB for Stanford that day.

bigs, if you're looking for something that "always" works, you'll never find it.

I noted the HS QBs who have had some really good production elsewhere. Stu Schweigert and Ralph Turner. Also, while not a QB, Gilbert Gardner was a HS WR, but came to Purdue, became a FR All American at LB, and went on to play LB in the NFL. (Schweigert had a pretty good NFL career as a Safety.)

No, it doesn't "always" work, but that's not a very realistic expectation.

You mentioned baseball. Baseball is a hitter's game. If they can hit, get them on the field. Pete Rose is arguably the greatest hitter to play the game. He played 2B, OF, 3B and 1B because they needed his bat in the lineup. Every team deals with that. That's baseball. You do the same thing with football: Get the players on the field!
