Wow, just scrolled thru 10 threads

Plus they played zone.
Cuse has always played "zone" under Jim. However "zone" is not the zone your mom and dad knew. "zone" is a matchup which starts out in a court area and "matches" up to the player in a man defense. They will hand players off as they leave their area and pick up players as they return. The idea was to play man defense, but create a better man defense by "specializing" the defensive skills needed at different areas of the court and so these players play "man" defense as much as possible within their special areas of the court. There is some logic to this and I'm much more in favor of a matchup than a true zone. Some teams will switch on horizontal screens and not vertical or other combinations. I've asked many times for anyone to tell me the differences between matchup and man with switching rules...other than the initial alignment...and then the "pointing out" who has who on defense so they can start to match up. Matchup zone is attacked like man defense since it shares soooooo much with man. I haven't followed the "Cuse but recall them years ago pressing a lot in Jim's younger days and I "thought" they played 2-3 matchup...which is sorta like a hybrid between a pure zone and man. FWIW, Bill Green was an initial promoter of the matchup zone at Marion. In a book by Bill he credits seeing a roverback at Purdue (in the 60s) during a football game as the impetus for his matchup. His asst (Moe Smedley) was a coach in a tourney championship game against us and my nephew went for 50 against his match-up. I think Moe is still coaching somewhere.

Las Cruces !!!! FTW ... We were pretty set on San Marcos, TX ... until we went to Las Cruces ...

Can't go wrong with either. New Braunfels, Texas (just south of San Marcos)....also Payson, Arizona if you really enjoy the quiet life in a picturesque setting.....still within a reasonable drive to more "city stuff" when you want it.

I appreciate all who retire to the desert southwest. Keeps more of the old farts off the southeastern coastal beaches that I prefer!!!

I have been to San Marcos...north east of San Antonio if I recall. Think there may have been a big outlet mall on the right hand side going north on whatever road that was. Probably been 12-15 years ago on business. I’ll check out the other. Thanks

OMG Nagemj02...should I really frustrate myself by seeing this game again? Deep inside I would like to see it, but have a few things in front at this time. Maybe get to it later? Thanks. :)

oops see this is not purdue, but the cuse

Are we talking north of El Paso? Been there (El Paso) a few times and naturally across the border to Juarez?

How do I recall this stuff and then go on some random thought? :)

OH FUNNY - we spent three days looking at houses in Payson about ten years ago ... just didn't pull the trigger.

It's Florida's Sweet 16 game. They played just as well vs. Syracuse but Syracuse defended them better (as you'll see), they got out in transition and scored more often than Purdue did in the previous game, and Rony Seikaly dominated Dwayne "The Lobster" Schintzius.

I think history shows that schintzus was an underachieving most of his games. Seikaly dominated a lot but thinking that team couldn't hit fts. History would be totally different if viewed only on a battle instead of the war which is many battles usually

Did you watch it?

I was at the Carrier Dome that weekend. Still painful to remember. We didn't look that great in the first game against Northeastern and then Florida had there way with us in game 2. That was when teams could still play tourney games on their homecourt and the mostly 'cuse crowd was rooting against us as the 2 seed.

I was there as well. Best about that trip was that Dolph Schayes and Larry Costello sat behind me the first game. The other most notable experience is that all the referees were in the same hotel I used. It was interesting to see one of them check out Friday morning, cut from continuing. He was pissed. Ed Hightower, Sam Lickliter and one from the Big 8 did our first game. I saw them in the restaurant and sort of eaves dropped their conversations. They all spoke very highly of Gene Keady. That was the game Mel McCants was ejected and I asked them how they would look at him if he played the next game. I got a very professional answer and appreciated that they didn't seam the type to hold grudges. Hightower remembered me in the dome after our game with Florida and one other time in Mackey the next year, so I felt he was a standup person of high estem. Licktliter, however, was pompous. But what do I know as he is in the Ohio HOF and was the Coordinator of Officials for the Summit League.

It was also the game that calhoun sent in a player to start a fight. RIP Reggie Lewis....
