Wow, just scrolled thru 10 threads

and not a one of us went total weirdo on the other. We should beat MSU every day, that appears to be the glue that holds Boiler Nation together
Ha Ha! BTW, Villanova got beat but tied the game on an offensive board when Marquette was in zone but shooting the gap in the zone. Now that may be the chemical that breaks up the glue you refer. :)

Maybe sniffin' too much glue caused me to want more zone, or cowbell?? I believe it was the late great Lloyd Bridges who said I picked a bad day to stop sniffin' glue. Anyway, I found by going cold turkey with fantasy baseball/message boards, I was able to enjoy the Cubs magical ride this past year. And I think it's time to do the same with PU bball, I think they are on to something here. Adieu ladies & germs, enjoy the rest of the season and Boiler Up!

Marquette closed on a 19-4 run playing a zone. Nova couldn't throw it in the ocean (6/34 from 3). Not going to get into the zone thing again with PU. Just wanted to point out the whole story and not just one possession.

If you go to Marquette's message board it is interesting to read their take on how the game changed and the run that they went on to finish the game. Different teams and different perspectives, just found it interesting based on the conversations we have had here.

Loved the way we played last night (including our defense). Looking forward to Sunday.

+1

We have tjreese's message but I raise Dryfly88's.

I admit I only saw a couple of possessions and the zone as usual gives gaps for offensive boards that usually results in points in put backs or Ft's. "IF" the zone was instrumental it always has that potential. I would have thought Villanova missing would have more to do with them than the zone, but again I didn't see the game. It would be interesting to know if the zone was pure or match-up because one you play as though you are playing against man and the other is played as a zone and not man.

Villanova is a smart team and so I wouldn't expect them to be confused by a zone and so the effectiveness of a zone if it were causal, probably would not be the result of confusing Villanova, but something played more effective due to ineffective offense that game by Villanova or in an unexplainable manner the result of a zone just for the sake of a zone. I've always maintained that I wouldn't mind having it in the tool box, but have offered anyone to explain why it would be better than man as a main defense or be effective in a game against good competition (Villanova is that, but I think Purdue can beat them) for a long duration. That said, I never watched the game and the Marquette people may be right. It could be in an unexplainable matter that the zone (if they couldn't shoot) would be better than man defense even if it had been backed off while still maintaining blockout assignments. Didn't Crean coach there? Seems like I tried to watch a few games a few years ago when they had Dominic James from Richmond, IN. I know I wondered quite a few times what they were doing under Crean...

Also couldn't have helped that Hart was in foul trouble....only played 19 minutes.
didn't know that either. Conference games usually get tougher and closer since the players are better scouted and prepared for individually and the systems are similar from year to year. Villanova has never impressed me as just a great team that was really hard to beat. I wouldn't mind the boilers having another shot. That said, losing Hart for over half the game is huge. How many teams lose their best player..player of the year potentially for over half a game and doesn't struggle? Butler is on in a few and I may watch that...but admit the Villanova game sounds appealing.

on FS1; meanwhile Florida State is getting rolled @ Georgia Tech, 46-24 early in the second half.

Stay up really late, TJ, and you can see the all-Swiss semifinal down under with Federer and Wawrinka. The winner is likely to face Nadal in the Final.

Just watched the Boilers beat MSU again moments ago. May catch OSU and Minny as that is getting close, but have Butler in a few and have four family members that graduated from there. I tried to find the Marquette sight and couldn't find anything from rivals. I thought it would be interesting to see what they write and their perspective.

FWIW, I had a nephew that was pretty good in the 8th grade as was his team. Kentucky started recruiting him in the 8th grade, but I think it was only a kind gesture from Kentucky as a result of the family connections in the horse business...the same connections that told me in the early 80s that Sloan was told the money was there (Florida) adn to make Florida a winner (remember their 87 team players?)..why I told you this I don't know? :) Where I was going was Cocao Beach, Florida. I used to have property there and the younger kids had the national AAU toourneys there adn I would go watch sometimes just to see some young talent. I remember slipping into the Y (the gym) and could see a lot of talent that didn't have the slightest idea of basketball, and thinking...wow, these kids could be good if taught. I think basketball knowledge has spread outside Indiana more than many years ago. Going back to Sloan...he liked Indiana guards.

Kinda random huh? must be old age... :) I'm kinda thinking Texas might be a place to retire :)

It's real simple, Nova had an off shooting night. Just giving you a jab back after your zone post. ;)

Here is Marquette message board you were asking about.

Yes, Vernon Maxwell, Moten, Schintzius.....all too well remember the number they did on the Boilers to end what once looked like a very promising season.

Norm Sloan seems to get overlooked somewhat in the basketball history.

Anyway.....Come on down.....plenty of room to randomly ramble.....with friends.

It all started with areas that might not have the same understanding as people in Indiana. It was Florida that took me back to Kentucky with nephew and then it was Florida that I recalled the money for Sloan to make Florida a winner (money in Kentucky as well...horse money) and while in Florida I remember going to the Y to just watch some play.... :)

I actually thought my original post about going to the Y would have had a few comments. I have a preference towards some water. Kinda would like to be one of those grumpy old men in a boat. :) However, could do some surf fishing as well...and then again this old guy wouldn't mind some hunting. Hunting, fishing and loving every day, that's the way this country boy plays...Thank God he made me this way. ;)

Wheels have severely limited hunting. New hip is still healing. Haven't been to the woods in over a year. Stay tuned. Intend to be in full retirement in coastal SC by fall and will have a boat with inshore capabilities. Always open for another grump to share time with.

As a youngster I used to love to hunt. Quit almost entirely after college and then about 15 years ago a friend got me out to deer hunt. Bought a muzzle loader and went for about 5 years and got a couple 11 pointers,a couple smaller bucks and a couple of does. Quit and then this year tried again and took an eight pointer. I realized dragging that sucker I'm not in very good shape... :) Used to love to pheasant hunt. Now, I'd like to wild boar hunt, deer, maybe bear (did when I was 12), pheasant, quail or perhaps some other small game. Son just got me a 17 cal and a friend wants me to go down to Kentucky and hunt some coyotes or coy (coyotes and dog mix). Used to like to go north to fish, but after surf fishing in the ocean at Cocoa Beach I kinda like the sun and heat to fish. If retired, I might get tired of this...I don't know. SC sounds fine as well. Only been there about 4 times.

Florida's next game vs. Syracuse (1987 NCAA's) is on YouTube. They played well against Syracuse too, but Rony Seikaly dominated Schintzius in that game. I think 'Cuse fronted him so he couldn't get the ball and dump it off to their cutters as often as he did vs. Purdue. They also played their 2-3 zone about as much as they played man. Syracuse's two senior regulars (SG Greg Monroe: a 4-year guy, and SF Howard Triche: a 2-year guy) stepped up and made some key plays for them when the game was going back and forth. Sherman Douglas also had about 4 or 5 alley-oops that led to dunks from guys like Seikaly, Derrick Coleman, and Stephen Thompson.

Florida's best game was against Purdue. Florida underachieved (except that game), but the talent was there and THAT was my point about the money being there for Sloan.

They played just as well against Syracuse but 'Cuse had players step up and better in-game management. I can find the game and link it if you would like.

I think the smaller world we live in, AAU, and an emphasis on year round professional training at much lower levels is increasing basketball knowledge nation wide.

perhaps another day...I'm so far buried on things to do that I just don't have time. Going off memory I remember Schinitsious (sp?) dominating and kicking it out where they were shooting very well. I seem to recall a guard having his way. They had 2 or 3 NBA players on that team that finally played like it. I don't think Purdue had any NBA players, but that was so long ago

Oh I agree. This was probably 20 years ago. I had a father and son sit behind me at Mackey early in the season. I heard the little boy (fifth grader?) talking about hitting the post and such wiht a pass and when a timeout was taken I turned and said I enjoy listening to the boy talk about basketball as he is more tuned in than some fans at such an age. His father said he was on a team (Lafayette area) and had an interest. I shared with him the importance of ball handling drills as he could control his game the better he handled the ball...and then went into shooting. Dad said he was working on a grip and I said I bet his thumbs are parallel rather than perpendicular and his father chuckled and said yes they were trying to correct that. I said that is quite common in youth to have more of a parallel grip and as strength happens the grip becomes more perpendicular and to stay on it but have patience. I turned and started watching the game and thought years ago how many might show how to hold the ball, but not explain it well and so ...yes coaching is much better today...

Junior Everette Stephens had brief stints with the Pacers and Bucks. Maxwell ended up on the "Clutch City" Houston Rockets championship teams from '94 and '95.

interesting. A couple of posts in Florida talk about the Cocoa Beach Pier catching whiting, pompano, drum and sheepshead...all good to eat. I sometimes went at night to the river (Indian) and watched them catch shrimp with the lights on top of the cages as shrimp just walked into the traps. I love seafood..and fresh seafood is the best.

When I would decide to just catch some shovel or bonnet head shark adn would latch into 3 foot or so I would have crowds around me stopping to see what it was I caught and of course stingrays would initially swim and put on quite the fight until they would just settle down like you caught a turtle. Any huge bends in the pole would bring a crowd. People would be shocked that I could catch shark so close to shore and many times would turn them loose since I could never make them taste well. A few times I would go out in low tide as far as I could go tip toeing and floating up on the wave to get as far out as I could to cast as far as I could and naturally those shark were a little bigger...and then one day a fin came up in the water not too far from me and I looked back to the beach and saw just how far I was from shore (great gradual beach at Coacoa Beach) and realized just how dumb I was because if that was a shark and he wanted me...I was a shark meat. Well it was a porpoise, but I never went out that far again. I like the sun and ocean, but I could do lake fishing as well.
