Wisconsin OL Transfer

I think even Bigs would like this guy.
Unlikely.

I refer to this part: "While he ended up redshirting his first year on campus..."

Unbelievable that Wisconsin, a school known for their offensive linemen for at least the past 25 years, found it necessary to redshirt this fine young man. Unbelievable. Unconscionable. How can they NOT recruit OL that are ready to go... who don't need a RS year??

Every d@mn one of their OL on their "two deeps" are RS OL.

They clearly don't know what the h3ll they're doing.

If he was recruited by WI to play OL, go get him. Their OL has punished out defense for 15 years now, so they know what they're doing.

Yeah.. Wisconsin has R-Sr in their depth but Purdue should be doing just fine when forced to start Sophomores due to injuries. 🤨

Guys transfer down for a reason. And this will be a transfer down.

Here is our recent track record with transfers. I may have missed a couple.

2021:
Broc Thompson (Marshall), transfer UP, Result = decent backup
Damarjhe Lewis (Indinia), transfer LATERAL, Result = decent backup
Jamari Brown (Kentucky), transfer LATERAL, Result = part time starter
Joseph Anderson (S. Carolina), transfer LATERAL, Result = hasn't seen the field
OC Brothers (Auburn), transfer DOWN, Result = hasn't seen the field much
Tyler Witt (WKU), transfer UP, Result = starter
Dylan Downing (UNLV), transfer UP, Result = depth, playing due to injury
Chris Jefferson (Findlay), transfer WAAAY UP, Result = decent backup
Mitchell Fineran (Sanford), transfer UP, Result = starter
Sampson James (Indinia), transfer LATERAL, Result = tbd, ineligible in 2021

2020:
DJ Johnson (Iowa), transfer LATERAL/DOWN, Result = played some due to injuries, then transferred out/down
Austin Burton (UCLA), transfer LATERAL, Result = 3rd string, never passes
Greg Long (UTEP), transfer UP, Result = starter
Tyler Coyle (Uconn), transfer UP, Result = injured, never played (may have started)
Ben Freehill (Ok State), transfer LATERAL/DOWN, Result = hasn't played

2019:
Ben Holt (WKU), transfer UP, Result = starter

2018:
Dennis Edwards (WKU), transfer UP, Result = starter

2017:
David Steinmetz (Rhode Island), transfer UP, Result = starter, All-B1G
Josh Okonye (Wake Forest), transfer LATERAL, Result = starter
TJ McCollum (WKU), transfer UP, Result = starter
Shane Evans (NIU), transfer UP, Result = starter
Corey Holmes (ND), transfer DOWN, Result = never played, transferred out/down

This might be overly simplified, but our best luck with transfers has been guys transferring from LATERAL programs who were successful at their prior school and guys transferring UP who were diamonds in the rough. Guys who came from buried in a big program's depth chart looking for playing time haven't panned out.

I would be cautious of any player that transferred mid-season. His team could still end up needing him, and he could have received the opportunity he was looking for. But too many choose to quit instead. Plus the player will no longer be working out with the team and not practicing. Realize there may be some extenuating circumstances, but they had better be good. Character counts.

Excellent work. Your last sentence says it all. That's why you're better off spending the extra time developing your young players beyond scrimmages and practices. There's a reason why those suck, and you just proved it with your analysis.

Developing your own recruits and keeping them healthy (looking at you, S&C program...)

AND

Being a destination program for good, experienced G5 players who want to come in, work hard, and compete on a bigger stage.

Unfortunately you and I are just dumb$hits here. 98% of this place thinks you can get Alabama quality players n the portal. The portal is nothing more than a venue to get NFL scabs during a strike to make a comparison. Can you get a player or two. Sure. But don't be like Brohm and try to fill a roster with them.

... don't be like Brohm and try to fill a roster with them.
wha...?

For the past few years we've had a severe depth issue. In an effort to address that, we've gone to the portal. Said portal has provided some relief at a few positions, accomplishing the objective. Some have contributed, some haven't. No doubt, the roster moves have served their purpose.

It seems as though your argument was to have done nothing.

Unless, of course, the point was solely to take a shot a Brohm, which has no intellectual depth.

An offensive lineman from UW? Hmmmmm how did we do against them? You believe he’d actually want to come to Purdue? The biggest problem with Purdue offensive linemen is that they are not really any better after redshirting than they were when they arrived! So why waste their time?

Getting a guy who was on the Wisconsin offensive line 2 deeps for multiple years would most likely be a big upgrade from what we currently have.

Unless there are some other issues, I don't think its a question of whether Purdue would want him. It's a matter of would he want to come to Purdue.

That's not my position at all. The portal is part of recruiting now. You have to make good use of it but you have to go after the right guys. Give me a guy who has played well at the college level over a guy who hasn't. Just because someone was a big recruit doesn't mean he made the transition to D1. In fact, this guy's story suggests otherwise. If he did he would be playing as a R-Sr, not getting passed over by younger guys. And he would be getting transfer offers from programs with more OL tradition than Purdue.

We've got to strike with the 22 year old late bloomer who was passed over out of high school and spent 3-4 years somewhere he didn't want to be working his ass off to become a G5 All Conference or FCS All American and get a chance in the big leagues.

Discounting what the portal has become is being very short sighted (not suggesting you are doing that to be clear :) )

Our biggest issue on the line right now is depth. We essentially have none and it hurts nothing to bring this guy in (if we can) unless there are personality issues. We don't need any sauce on the football team.

The main thing it could hurt is taking up a roster position with a Corey Holmes that could be filled by a Steinmetz or McCollum.

By and large I think Brohm and staff have done a pretty good job finding some diamonds in the portal, and I think they do their homework in these situations. If a guy isn't starting in his 5th year that's a red flag. Maybe this guy is the exception. I did read that Wisconsin tried moving him to DL at one point.

I'd be scouting the G5 All Conference teams right now for offensive linemen.

2021:
Broc Thompson (Marshall), transfer UP, Result = decent backup Been a very solid contributor
Damarjhe Lewis (Indinia), transfer LATERAL, Result = decent backup
Jamari Brown (Kentucky), transfer LATERAL, Result = part time starter Been very, very good. Will probably remain a starter. Might displace Mackey or Trice.
Joseph Anderson (S. Carolina), transfer LATERAL, Result = hasn't seen the field
OC Brothers (Auburn), transfer DOWN, Result = hasn't seen the field much
Tyler Witt (WKU), transfer UP, Result = starter Probably wouldn't be a starter had injuries/retirements not occurred.
Dylan Downing (UNLV), transfer UP, Result = depth, playing due to injury Wouldn't be playing much had Horvath not got hurt or transfers not occurred
Chris Jefferson (Findlay), transfer WAAAY UP, Result = decent backup
Mitchell Fineran (Sanford), transfer UP, Result = starter
Sampson James (Indinia), transfer LATERAL, Result = tbd, ineligible in 2021

2020:
DJ Johnson (Iowa), transfer LATERAL/DOWN, Result = played some due to injuries, then transferred out/down Apparently a head case...
Austin Burton (UCLA), transfer LATERAL, Result = 3rd string, never passes
Greg Long (UTEP), transfer UP, Result = starter Probably wouldn't be starting had injuries/retirements not occurred...
Tyler Coyle (Uconn), transfer UP, Result = injured, never played (may have started)
Ben Freehill (Ok State), transfer LATERAL/DOWN, Result = hasn't played

2019:
Ben Holt (WKU), transfer UP, Result = starter Unfortunately he was a starter due to level of talent on team at that time.

2018:
Dennis Edwards (WKU), transfer UP, Result = starter

2017:
David Steinmetz (Rhode Island), transfer UP, Result = starter, All-B1G

See my comments in red above. Although there has been success with "transfer ups", it's pretty much an indictment of the level of talent Brohm was left with by the previous regime. Taking guys en masse from lower tier programs should really be the exception and not the norm. Are there going to be great players that developed from lower tier programs? Absolutely. Should Purdue have as many as they do starting on the OL? No

He started on the DL as a RS FR. They then moved him to OL.

I know there's a concern for taking another team's sore-armed pitcher (baseball metaphor), but there's also the situation where someone needs a change of scenery.

As we've heard from many on this forum, coaches aren't infallible. That can occur with position coaches (and coordinators), as well. Lots to consider, and it's never simply a case of, "well, he couldn't cut it at _________, so he won't cut it here".

Depth??? Purdue does not even have 5 legitimate guys to start, that is a bigger issue than depth...it would be great to have depth for certain, but, Purdue needs to find 5 guys that can play before they worry about depth, and, they have been searching for that for 3 years now...and little to suggest it will be different a year from now.

We get it. You hate Brohm.
