Wisconsin at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

So it's not true huh. Let's look at his stats, which don't lie. Not to mention he's only scored below double figures in two games this year

Citing year long stats doesn't equate to consistency within a game, and it doesn't speak to defense at all.

Loyer is a burst player. He'll play a burst where he will get you 4-6 quick points each half. He'll pick up a steal or a charge call or a nice pass.

He will also spend a good chunk doing not a lot, or making a bad pass or playing bad defense.

We need the points he scores very much and there's no one on the team who is such a threat to heat up from outside to open things up so he's both fundamentally important to the team and clearly the best option at the 2.

But he is not consistent and he most certainly isn't consistent on defense.

He struggled on defense today, particularly in the second half, IMO. Had a solid offensive first half.

Boilers just didn't have it today, and Wisconsin gave them problems on both ends. Tough with some of these single play games, but you never know - Purdue could see them again in the BTT - I would have to think they'd be in a better position to compete if so.

Does anyone know what happened to Penn State? They beat the brakes off Purdue and since then are 5-12. Wins over Coppin St, Drexel, Penn, Northwestern and Rutgers.
Baldwin hasn’t been 100% since Purdue game. Injured his back and puff Johnson also broke his hand I believe or some type of hand injury. When they don’t have Baldwin on the floor at 100% they aren’t really competitive.

Yeah Wisconsin also had a week to prepare and boilers had played on Tuesday (not an excuse but just putting that out there). Purdue just didn’t seem too confident from the jump. Kudos to Wisconsin for having their gameplan and sticking to it and executing

No defense. 72% in second half for Wisconsin. They are a great offensive team, but not that great and in Purdue’s building! This was to be a rebuilding year for Purdue even with Jacobsen. It is not, they are a top 20 team , not top 10 however. They struggle with athletic teams and for once Wisconsin has some good athletes.

Missed the 2nd half. Don't think I'll watch either, but I feel like this team has been sliding for a few weeks now since eeking out that IU win and it's not surprising if you take a step back. Defense really hasn't been that good since blitzing Michigan.

I cringed when I saw the bracket reveal as a 2 seed, because this team currently isn't play close to that. More like a 5 or 6. Resume backed it up, but Defense is bad again and there is absolutely 0 quality depth.

Frustrating that they lose at home and basically eliminate chance at 3 Pete though.

That being said I would much rather have a team hot in March than February. Maybe this will light a fire......

Defense was obviously horrible and reason for loss, but how does Braden only score 6 pts?

Win @ MSU and @ IU fixes this, but not the hole you want to see dug....

I have a very hard time seeing us win both of those. Getting 1 will be lucky.

Msu likely loses tonight meaning we get them at home having also lost 2 in a row and they will be desperate. At IU means its another IU national championship game.

And as is usual, both teams will shoot way above their average and each will have 1 guy who averages 2 ppg score 15.

Im so ****ing sick of that being our reality. When was the last time we just got a team that missed wide open looks and had a bad game? Seems NEVER

Tough loss but let’s put things in perspective. Did anyone think before this season we would be a projected 2 seed at this point in the season? Nope. We are a flawed team with three main scorers and we basically don’t have a traditional center. If any one of them has an off game it’s tough for us to win. I love Cox - he’s playing extremely well for a Freshman and you can also see the talent Harris has and he’s improving. Heide and Colvin make all of us crazy but I’m not giving up on them. I saw both of them actually drive the ball today - very little but it’s something. The unpredictability of this team is what also makes it fun to watch. When they are on they are very good. All is not lost. We still have several weeks to be playing at our best heading into the tourney to take our shot regardless of our seed. You never want to struggle but I’d rather it be now than in 3 weeks. Sorry but I’ve always been a glass half full guy and I’m not changing now.

Because penn st was 73rd in NET today and just lost at home to a bad team and will fall out of the top 75 tomorrow making our loss a quad 2 loss.

Yet another opponent who has their best game of the season against us and then sucks the rest the way
Thought you meant Wisconsin

Surprised more people aren't talking about this. Tonje and Klesmit should be good. They're like 25 years old. And Crowl. And Gilmore.

Meanwhile our roster is composed of, you know, actual college age kids.
Maybe it’s time painter stops being stubborn and takes advantage of the transfer portal instead of filling our bench with 18 year old 3-stars.

COVID kids taking advantage. This should be the last year you hear of a COVID year. Over the next couple years you'll start seeing things go back closer to how they used to be. You might see 5th year seniors, but no more 7th year seniors.

Heide drove it today
We just need way more out of Heide and Colvin. Those guys either haven't been taught to attack, dribble, or they just don't have it.

We need some big guards to be attackers. They do no good sitting out on the perimeter waiting for a shot. It limits our rebounding ability, Ft's and scoring. These guys need to step up for us or go get it in the portal.

I'd be surprised if they make 5 years a thing. Juco is indeed a thing but how many JUCO kids are making an impact at a power school?
It doesn’t matter right now if juco kids have made an impact but it’s more of a route for kids to go that can then be in college for a lot longer and we will continue to see 24-26 year olds still playing college ball.

Chad Baker Mazera from Auburn played two years D1, went to JUCO, and is in his 2nd year, 5th overall (guess he would have had a covid year). He is making an impact. But he’s also 25.

And 5th year could happen because the ncaa rolls over anytime someone sues them.

Is that him being stubborn tho? I mean we are just seeing it “hurt” us (and that’s very loosely said) this year.
I just laugh whenever I see some random poster saying Painter is "stubborn". It has to be the single most ridiculous critique there is. Especially considering not a single one of us on here knows what goes on within the team locker room/offices/etc. I am willing to bet that our perception of what is going on is not even close to reality and why I am glad none of us are coaching the team.

Colvin and Cam have a ton of potential and for some reason it isn't there this year and it's having an impact and we can assume that just by looking at stats/losses. Another issue is missing wide open 3s which I can only assume is some mental block at this point...

Yeah for sure.

The wide open 3 thing…it’s hard coming off the bench and being able to just hit a shot right away. Different scenarios of:

Youve sat for 10 min of game time/45 min of real time

You are in the game but don’t get a shot for a solid 5 min of game time / 15 min of actual time

You get one shot every 15 possessions

And then if you miss, fans are all over you with how bad you are.

Shooters (Myles in this case) need rhythm and volume. Once they get that, it allows them to get their touch back and muscle memory comes back into play. We saw that instantly with Myles yesterday. He missed a shot, got it back and nailed a three. Then he nailed his next 2 in a row.

I will continue to say, if we want to see him shoot well, we need to generate shots for him. And I also think we need to generate more shots for fletch, Braden and CJ. Not just throw it to TKR and everyone stand around and watch.

Just my opinion of course. I’ll still trust paint, but if one of the big 3 is off/not scoring and we are awful on defense, we aren’t gonna win too many games.

It's not so much pure "stubbornness" as it is slowness to adapt. In retrospect I don't believe Paint would take 6 freshman in a class again. Unless those frosh are 5* or high 4* players it just doesn't make sense.

The *prime* players in today's game are the old, experienced guys. Somehow the SEC as a whole figured this out early, and it's paying off in spades.

Just looked back when we played Alabama. Why are we playing Berg anymore. Why did he feel comfortable playing him against a top 5 team, but not now.....what gives?
I suspect that Berg has mentioned to Matt that he wants to transfer or Matt has laid out his probable future for him. Getting on a different team where he can get a lot of minutes would help him.

I think we will see him adapt over the next 3-5 years. But not sure he will take more than 2-3 guys a year, unless he absolutely needs to

So given a choice, who is the better player? Flagg a true freshman? Or Dickinson who is being paid a lot as a portal transfer? High school recruits can be a lot better than portal transfers. We just signed the wrong ones!

Man, you’re such a troll lol.

This isn’t on the freshman. Cj and Harris have been sensational. DJ got hurt—couldn’t have predicted that (although you probably will say you did). Raleigh was going to go probably RS until the DJ injury.

Can’t wait for you to say next year or the year after how good all these guys are and that “you predicted it” even though you just said we signed the wrong ones.

Flagg but he's not your normal freshman. He's supposed to be a high school senior to begin with. So the best player in the country may not only be a freshman, but essentially a high school senior at that.
