Why is he still employed?

The details are irrelevant to a certain extent. Otherwise, we could offer a coach $12M but if the details to reach that $12M are unattainable, it doesn't matter.
What matters is, they've committed to a realistic $9M a year, while Purdue was in the $4 ballpark.
I suspect Purdue will be in the high 6-8M range for the next hire, especially if he's coming from a P5 school.
Well you could just as well cite Northwestern's commitment with their new stadium being built for hundreds of millions and say, "Hey look, they are investing hundreds of millions in their program. We should do the same" and ignore the other details surrounding that investment. The details matter.

So I know it’s a $9 million buyout, but could that be reduced if he gets a coaching job next year? Not sure what the language in the contract states.
Yes, there's always that with a buyout. Any contract he signs comes off of Purdue's expense.

Yes, I would agree. NU's commitment is strong and a message that they're serious about football.

What's been Purdue's biggest investment/commitment to football the last 10 years? I would say the contract they offered Brohm which I believe was in the $6M range.

Some school will hire him as a defensive coordinator next year.
High school maybe. I'm not even really joking. When you're this bad, I can't imagine any program with a pulse hiring him. Position coach maybe, but that is a major step down. Hazell went on to coach the Vikings WRs after being fired and then was out of football the following year I believe.

It would actually help Purdue if he gets a job as it'd absorb some of the 9 mil.

I kinda doubt it actually, and if so, it will be a small-market school. His defense flat-out sucked. He may have to work his way back up from further down the ladder.
He's got $9M to fall back on. He'll probably do to the MAC as a DC and try to work his way back to another P5 DC job.

We can joke about this, but getting fired now might save Walters's career. He'll have to work is way back up the coaching ladder (with A LOT of Purdue money), but another year of this might have finished him.

Right, but unless he really turns it around, I doubt that saves us much more than a million dollars. I figure he's going to have to drop back to a lower tier D1 program, possibly as a position coach. Kind of like what happened with Hazell.

But I guess, if this maybe wasn't going to happen because of money, every little bit helps.

He was so bad, not even sure its MAC level at first. He might take a year off, he has money, but I cant imagine he will look for a job right away with this smell. They were by far the worst team in the power 5 conferences, it wasnt even close, and we just lost our rival game by 66-0. A game we have won 77 times out of 126 times it was played, a game we have a 64% wnning percentage and we lost 66-0.

Walters was beyond historically bad,

Some of us have been calling out Bobinski for years although many here praised him for absolutely no good reason at all. Other than the layup that was the Brohm hire, I can't tell you hardly anything else that he has done well.
Well he did hire Katie Gearld’s.

He never has to work again. He hit the lottery with this Purdue thing.

He probably has to work again, he probably got used to a lifestyle, but who knows maybe he is smart with his money? He is young, 38, long time to make what 4-5 million after taxes and expenses last with a higher lifestyle?

He was so awful though, it will be interesting how the rest of his career will go.

Well maybe so, but he should be able to make three to four hundred thousand a year easy without ever touching the principal.
