Let me know if my math is wrong.

The number was upped to 15 (+2)
Furst graduated (+1)
Berg, Heide, Colvin *corrected* transfer (+3)
Once incoming freshman (-1)
Three incoming portal (-3)

Am I missing anything?

Quite a bit, no offense.

Cox didn't transfer.

Berg, Waddell, Colvin, Heide gone as transfers.
Furst graduated.

Cluff, Murphy in as transfers.
West and Mayer in as freshmen.

+2 scholarships by new rule.

So from last year's 13 scholarships, we at minus 5 and plus 4. Makes 12. So technically 3 spots open. I'd say there may be room for one more established portal player. Maybe. Then if Painter wants to technically use all 15, then this year's walk-ons that still have eligibility could try out for the remaining spots.

There may be someone from Europe or high school or a late transfer. Maybe one of those players seeking a lot of money and playing time will receive no offers and will come to Purdue. What about that guy who left MSU? Has he found a home yet?

My guess is painter keeps two walkons and doesn’t sign any more players. Maybe he’ll give a walkon a scholarship

Booker went to UCLA and Holloman went to NC state.

If you keep walk ons, they have to go on scholarship and is that your guess? Or you stated multiple things that could happen. I assume when one of them does, you’ll proclaim you were right?

They don’t have to go on scholarship, but they take one of the 15 slots, whether they are scholarship or not. I think this is what you meant.

I would be really surprised if they added anyone at this point. We are not aware of any freshman on their recruiting board and I just don’t know where the minutes would come from for an additional experienced player.

There's still a big hole in the plan for defense on opposition front line scorers. 3's and 4's. Sure would like to see a decent sized, rangy, long armed defender, even for spot duty. The guys Myles and Cam would have guarded. Who takes them now if they are going off????
Could be a very important piece on a contender.

Why wouldn’t you put them on scholarship is they take one of the 15 spots? I think how I understand it, is they do take a scholly if they’re on the team.

I thought that was exactly it, that there are no more walk-ons and everyone on the team has to be on scholarship. Am I wrong here?

Practically yes, but I don't think every player HAS to be on scholarship.

As I understand it, scholarships AND roster spots are capped both at 15......unless they further change the portal rules (which.....let's be honest......they will :) ), why wouldn't you offer all the scholarships? But, I guess in specific circumstances, maybe schools wouldn't, or maybe there are other athletic budgeting concerns that could come into play. Either way, the days of the traditional walk-on, preferred walk-on, etc. as we know them appear to be over.

My hope and guess is this is enough, cause anyone added now takes away from Harris and Cox and we need them starting next year

I could have made multiple posts! I tried to be brief

Until you give a walkon a scholarship they are still considered and called a walkon. The rules are changing but haven’t changed yet and may still change. So until the official word comes out that they have officially been awarded a scholarship I’ll refer to them as walkons. It should be noted that’s what a football player was referred to earlier this week! The media referred to him as a walkon! And the walkon received a scholarship. So I believe you need to hold your tongues for a few more months before you claim all walkons are on scholarship

Combination of semantics and nuance. Yes, they take one of the 15 spots, no, you don’t have to put them on scholarship, yes, you probably would because they’re taking a roster spot anyway and the $ for a scholarship are immaterial in the scheme of things.

The nuance is that it sounds like MP doesn’t want 15 guys competing for pt (sorry, Bone), so those last two to three guys are likely designated practice players.

I don't know why any coach would want 15 guys competing for pt. It's just not logical.

My guess is they are keeping King and the Fine as they would be good practice players. The walk ons like Lusk and Rayl likely become managers if they want to stay with team.

In a year where you are all in ,wouldn't mind adding insurance defensive wing or big man for depth. Even a mid to lower level athlete wing or banger down low that knows they won't play, but want to be on winning team.

Blast your damn logic man......I'm a doctor, not a ball coach.......

I know a lot of folks are saying that we don’t or shouldn’t add another piece but we did not really fill the need many were focused on of a athletic big guy who can seek his shot at all three levels but specifically rebounding and the ability to drive and create shots… not necessarily a big name or star.

A guy like this

The question then is does someone else feel the need to hit the portal? Only Paint and coaching staff know where that stands…

Is it too funny that the kid is from Old Dominion but the picture is from whatever his previous school was? Looks like Siena maybe? Portal world at its finest.

I dont see purdue taking anyone else unless its another euro that has years to play. Next years team is set. Anyone we would take would be for the future. 25 class is picked through and any talented underclassman in the portal wont want to sit next season.

Have we still only taken graduate transfers and freshmen? I can live with that if that's the way we play the portal. Who is the last non-grad transfer that Painter has taken? Nobody comes to mind for me.

Cluff has only been in college 2 years. Murphy has only been in college 3 years. Doubt either have completed their undergrad tho it's possible Murphy has.

I think Murphy graduated from Columbia. He was there three years, played two.

If you're talking prior to the portal and non-graduate transfers, I think it's back to Chally, Crump, and Carl Landry (actually under Keady) days.
