Jamie Shaw tweeted the top half of D1 schools will spend 7-8 million NIL dollars each next year. With some topping 10 million. Let's say we are at the 8 million. How do we spend it while keeping the big 3? Owen Freeman will command 2million my budget is spent. Bear in mind all Purdue players receive some NIL money. Also know many of our players will be worth more to other teams. While nonstarters will jump simply for that reason money may not keep them. Not sure where we landed this year but Catching left over a Million on the table from this year's NIL budget. IMO TKR and Smith will be over 2 million each or over half the budget. What is your game plan keep what we have or go shopping? This is the real side of college sports, and the budget is your salary cap. Money can't buy you love IU spent the most money this year in the portal followed closely by UI over 20 million combined resulted in one NCAA Tourney win and two middle of the pack teams in the B1G. I wouldn't count on starters staying because they love Purdue nonstarters Morton 150k - Gillis 350k took the money and ran. With Painter saying he can't wait on spending in the portal the sweet 16 teams are at a disadvantage with the portal but must field a team next year. Not sure if it's true or not but I'm hearing Fletcher made over 300k this year. Interested to see your opinions and who can build a team closest to Painter.

Braden - 3M - 5M (his nil is valued at close to 6 I think)
TKR - 2.5M
Fletch - 500k-750k
Portal guys - 750k-1.5M each (depending on who it is)

Then split up the rest between the non starters.

It’s also ridiculous the portal opens today and hurts the teams that are actually successful in march.

Additionally, it’s been said many a time here—Mason and Ethan made a decision to leave BEFORE the start of their senior year and did not leave because of $$$.

I’ve said this before, my best friends daughter ran in Mason’s circle, he would have returned, Coach sort of felt that after 5 years it was best for Mason to explore other options, I’m guessing after Catchings left he would have been welcomed back.

That may be true. I don’t think this team would have been better with him…I love him as a player. But his skill set complemented Zach so well. I don’t think he would have been as effective with TKR. Our defense and rebounding may have been worse tbh.

Him leaving allowed others to develop and not sure that happens if he stays.

He’s one of the great Boilers and I’ll always root for him.

First we should get a Purdue marketing expert to recruit a Beard Co. to add $1 M to the till.

Then pay as needed to keep top 2. Try to add a starter @ $1.25 M. Pay 4-6 what is left over

I can't believe I'm saying this...but Smith is priority No.1, then TKR.

I'd let Fletch walk if he wanted to, then I'd go find a couple of 6'4 guys from mid-majors who with good handles, can pentrate, finish and play D.
Fletch won’t walk. No reason to. He should be our 3pt guy/4-5th option next year.

Agree on the latter part…but I’d say even taller dudes. And get the 7 footer from BUCKNELL

I didn't say they left for the money just giving you an idea of their worth. IMO Myles, Cam and Harris will be at or near Mason's value and Daniel well above it. Not sure on Raliegh, Cox, and Benter. Pretty sure we got West at a bargain rate. My point is we only have so much to play with. And your numbers for the top two are aligned with my own. Painter said if he was a kid he would take the money because it can be life changing and future earning are not guaranteed. We will not see the same team next year. Some moves may shock you. And some moves may force other fans on here to rethink the sport.

Yup for sure.

Apologies on misunderstanding on Mason and Ethan!

I think all those guys are worth what you said. Although, from what I know (which is not much 😂 ), I would think DJ wouldn’t be higher than the other since he hasn’t played a full season? But maybe I’m wrong. Not saying he’s not worth that, but from my understanding, guys are rewarded with performance at Purdue. But again, I may be wrong.

I hope we tell football, “hey sorry but this next year is pivotal for bball and we need all the money for a championship run. You can have the money the following year, but we gotta go all in for 2026” haha

All of which was promised by those who supported NIL would never happen. It was to help the poor college student struggling to eat each week. NIL has ruined college sports and turned it into pro-light.

I like this discussion because, just like in every pro game, there will come a cap for all D1 schools to ensure parity from bottom to top. I think we can all agree that more reform (much more) is needed as NIL is being exploited creating three tiers/classes of schools ($$$, $$, and $). While I do believe NIL has brought to light what was largely happening in the shadows, it was at least in the shadows and kept to a minimum.

I'm pretty sure Painter has said we will have as much NIL money as we need. I don't know what that is, or how much these players make but I'm pretty sure the coaching staff and administrators know we have something special here and if they want to keep the ATM spitting out money they need to feed it.

If I had $8 million to spend, I’d give half of it to st Jude’s hospital and the other half to all of the school systems who will soon see their budgets slashed in half. There are a lot more things in life than paying college basketball players!

I’d rather build a future than a college basketball team!

A little off topic perhaps, but may be on interest to some and something I wasn’t aware. So, I’m researching some info yesterday and Kim is watching UConn and Florida and I hear her gasping at various events saying “ You know better than that…and get up off the floor!” I go in and catch the last half or so of the game. I ask her who plays today and she rattles them off noting that she wants to watch her guy (Mason) in addition to other games. Her favorites over the last few years are Rapheal and Mason which probably are not the favorites of a lot of women. I could list others as well, with a strong appreciation of both. I’m guessing she sees “substance” in each?

So I tell her I want to catch some of Kentucky and see a player Purdue recruited that CJ took his place and she says, “Travis Perry?” I’m totally unaware that she knows anything about him and she tells me a co-worker of hers, that I know, said her cousin dated him and that her nephew (a Boiler fan and high school player in the late 70s) was trying with Jeff McKean (a friend that played high school in early 80s under Wayne Allen) to get him to Purdue. She said Jeff’s sister that was in high school with Kim and Kelly (cheerleader at IU when Knight threw the chair) was not a cheerleader for Purdue, but on a dance squad of something similar. She said Jeff was a “co-founder” of Boiler Alliance. I was unaware of this and certainly showed me Kim knew some things concerning Purdue I was unaware 😉 Small world…

So we're taking this tweet as gospel?
I suspect we don't know yet what exactly top teams will spend on NIL because it's still very new and in flux.

I doubt it will so uniform that half the entire NCAA will all be within 2 million of each other in spending. A team like Purdue with three seniors and a real final four shot with the right additions might spend differently this upcoming year than a year later with those three seniors graduated or a team that loses a lot of players and has to/decides to reload via the portal.

I expect starters to stay because I doubt any of the Big 3 are leaving for their senior year because some school offered them a little more money. Now bench/younger players getting thrown a big bag? Maybe. If someone wants to offer Heide as one example a million bucks, that's hard to match and hard to turn down.

some teams will not want a 1 year player, but Purdue is not only enticing for a big 4 or 5, but should be able to get a good one. Other players grabbed are more iffy and should any other players leave. There are things I do not ask that could put a person in an uncomfortable position and things I don't need to know, but I know there was NIL a day or days before Ohio State. I wish players got a stipend and hope the cap is less than the wild west allows.

I think the NCAA should bring back the sit out one year transfer rule.
That would definitely cut a lot of transfers out.
Of course the NCAA would subsequently be sued, lose their case and wala.

That ship has unfortunately sailed as you suggest. That really helped pry open the Pandora's Box with NIL.

There is no going back, and as some have also suggested, the day is coming soon when some will have to reevaluate the sport - it's not really college basketball as we once knew it......there's always change, refinements, etc., which can be good - total metamorphasis - you may/may not like what results.

I think it's wonderful for young men and women to have substantial opportunities for a better life and financial security - no question - it's also added a huge set of variables and distractions for everybody (players and families, coaches, and administrators, among many) - and ultimately, that shows up in results - one way or another. Guidelines are coming? Maybe, but I can't certainly trust the NCAA or other institutional forces to get that or the timing right based on recent past performance......but, we shall see, hopefully.

To each his or her own.

END RANT! For now.....

I would not be surprised that programs like U Conn and Duke just to name a couple have a 15 million budget

There were classes of schools before NIL.
The point wasn't to help hungry kids, the point was that schools were making collectively billions of those kids and they were getting none of that.

NIL "budget" doesn't exist yet. The NIL collectives can spend as much as they want on players. It is the revenue sharing that is coming later this year that has a budget of $20.5 million per school.

So if you want to just play with numbers and say you only have 8 million to spend that is fine. But the actual budget of many teams will be far higher than that. If this tweet is correct and the NIL budget alone will be 6-8 million, then the whole budget will be much larger because you then have the revenue sharing on top of it.

I think some get NIL confused with revenue sharing. They are 2 different things and both will contribute to how much each school and their collective spend on basketball starting next season.

We still don't know how NIL and the revenue sharing will co-exist. I doubt anything changes, but there may be some teeth to some governing body over all of this somewhere.

$8 million should be enough to retain Braden and TKR.

Many schools--not just state universities--will be losing tons of funding from the grant money President Elon has withdrawn by bascially shutting down the NIH. I already know a few people who have lost their university stipends because of it. Add the fact that we will have far fewer international students paying full tuition because they are not eligible for federal financial aid, and university budgets are set for a major downfall.

Perhaps some of the institutions of higher learning need to learn to manage their finances better? Isn't that what they do in the private sector? When economic conditions get tough, you adjust.

How does that impact revenue sharing and NIL, tho?

Why do you state schools will have their budgets slashed in half?
Because I’m knowledgeable about many more things than just Purdue basketball. Most local school systems are dependent on federal grants. When the federal department of education closes and transfers responsibility for those programs to the states, the states will be responsible for picking up the tabs of what was a federal grant. The states have no money to pick up the tab the federal government was paying. Where is that money going to come from for paying for those student lunches? From increased property taxes, increased state income taxes and increased sales taxes. High school sports? Students will have to start paying to play! Admittedly many school systems currently charge students to pay for their uniforms and shoes and other things. But not all schools did and not all students paid to play. All those supposed scholarships at public schools will soon disappear. And schools like luminaries is smiling!

So in support of STUDENT athletes, my desire is to give money to their school systems so that school will be able to continue to actually have athletic teams. If you follow education rather than sports, when schools are faced with budget cuts and they will be, I know what areas will be cut. And I’m sad to say band, music and art are first on the chopping block and extracurricular activities are next!

But go ahead and give a college athlete $5 million. Why? Basically for only one reason. You want your team to win. It’s not about competing anymore. Ivy League schools compete. You give out $5 million to certain players because you want to win games. Is there any other reason you’d want to pay your athletes ? Would you shell out the same amount of money if Purdue was a 20 game loser? Was Smith a good investment?

At least in giving money to st Jude and school systems, my hope is to make a difference. At some point in time, the more you give to players and the less you give to schools, you will see the schools stop offering the sports programs. You already see that in track and gymnastics. A little known fact. Not all big 10 teams have indoor track teams. Look at the MVC college conference. Not all of their schools have football teams. The ncaa is creating new tiers. What are you going to say when Purdue is no longer included in that top tier? What happens when Purdue starts cutting their sports programs and your beloved basketball program is affected? It won’t happen today or tommorow. But it will happen if we stay the current path.

Gymnastics is already a sport of the past. What sport is next? Crew? Wrestling? Field hockey? Hockey? Lacrosse? Volleyball? Swimming? On the other side of the coin, let’s give a point guard or center $10 million , because why? Because we want a winning team!
