Interesting read on the basketball arms race

Certainly, some of this is outside of MP's control, but I think there's a lot he can do and has done to influence the retention of his key players. Guys like Myles and Cam are always going to be a risk, but I think (hope?) Painter will continue to keep most of his top priority guys, both current top contributors and key young guys.
We all hope that. Time will tell.

The evidence suggests it but I’m sure there will be exceptions and at some point Purdue is going to lose a guy that really hurts.
Agree in a very small sample size, PU/CMP have done an excellent job of keeping and getting the talent to put a championship contending team on the floor. It's just so new though that it is hard to draw any conclusions from that sample. If we are here saying the same thing 5 years from now, that will be a very different thing. I agree with you that it is more likely than not to happen, but CMP has his work cut out to actually do over the long haul.

I think CMP will do his best to not have huge turnover in any given year. But frankly, there is only so much he can do about it. I'm afraid there will be years where that number will be large, or it could go the other way, and the number is small, but the quality of the team is down. Fans won't like that either. I'm hopeful he can balance it, but I'm sticking with it either way. College hoops is the only sport I'm crazy about. I'm not willing to give it up. I see your position and know that you are not alone in that position, many feel the same way you do.
Painter's only goal should be quality of team. If her gets the best quality by using the portal nearly every year to get multiple guys then so be it. As you said, it's uncharted territory for everyone including Painter. Flexibility over stubbornness is required.

There are many fans that don't like the idea of large turnovers in the roster every year. I can't say I'm crazy about it, But I want CMP to do whatever he needs to do to have a championship contender as often as possible. But I recognize that other fans of PU don't feel the same way I do.

The money out there is stupid. Who knows what Duke has but i bet they have the most. USC apparently giving Rodney Rice 3mil for some reason.

It'll happen to everyone eventually. Even the Big dogs. I mean Florida just lost a guy that would have started next year so he could go come off the bench for Kentucky. And he just won a national title with Florida.

Plenty of fans hated the 3p shot when it first started but they adjusted.

There's also a legitimate question as to what 'quality of team' means. Does that mean that he should optimize to put his best possible team on the floor every year, even if it means sacrificing development that will help in subsequent years?

I think there's a pretty wide consensus that MP could have helped last season's team by getting a Lance Jones replacement rather than relying on the two freshmen and that he chose the path he did to optimize for this season.

The loss of DJ hurt bad.
IMO we win the BIG and possible make another F4 if he was healthy and played all season, the way he did the 1st game and a little.

IMO: He should do whatever is needed each year to put a championship contending team on the floor. If he feels that isn't in the cards in a particular year and "builds" for the following year, I'm ok with that. But I think more than 1 year without at least a chance at conference title will be seen as a mistake now that the portal is available. I'm oversimplifying, but I think you get what I mean.

Yes, I totally get it, and I think that's probably directionally correct, recognizing that I don't know the exact right answer.

I think you're right in recognizing that the ceiling may differ from year to year for a program like Purdue and it's smart to adjust your approach accordingly. It will be interesting to see the approach next season after a bunch of key guys graduate, especially if none of the younger guys pull a Carsen Edwards this year and emerge as an obvious young star on an older team.

Agree that the DJ injury hurt. One could argue, though, that MP banking that heavily on DJ (assuming he knew what he had with Caleb and Will) rather than going after an experienced one-year big, showed that he was building for this season.
